I quit the curly girl method just now. :( can i still co-wash?

So for the past 2 or 3 months I have been doing the curly girl method. My hair liked some of the silicone free products, hated some others and other products didn't do squat for my hair. I have plopped, styled with silicone free products, co-wash, conditioned, used oils etc. You name it, I did it. My hair is unruly and I have discovered I don't have curly hair. My hair is thick and wavy and extremely course. Im sure I got porouse hair also. Anyways last night I wanted to feel pretty and got me a curling wand. Yep, a big no no. My hair felt fried by the time I was finished since I didn't buy a heat protectant cause I couldn't find anything without silicone in it. Today, as I tied my hair in a ponytail I decided I was done. I went to cvs and got some macademia natural oil and applied some to my very dry, brittle frizzy hair and..... Ohhhhhh......instant shine, tamed the frizzies and does not look oily at all. It seemed no matter how little oil I put on my hair to seal it always tends to feel oily but not with this thing. Anyways I bought a few other products that contained a silicone or 2 in it and will give it a try today. I just hope and pray it works because my hair feels soooo bad right now. I will not lie, at the beginning of the curly girl method and the co-washing it got so soft but I guess I have no clue how to style witout silicones so there it went. Can I still co-wash every day using silicone products and still have nice hair? I know silicones cause buildup but what if I use the kinky curly clarifying shampoo once a week or a non sulfate shampoo? Or do I need to use a sulfate shampoo every week to prevent buildup. Ughhh I loved the co-wash and don't want to give that up though.

Sounds like you found a product you like. That's a good thing! The only way you'll find out if you are still able to cowash is to try it out. If you get build up from the cone you can shampoo it out. Just experiment a bit to see what works for you.

A shampoo with coco betaine or cocamidopropyl betaine will remove silicones if you don't want to use sulfates.

I wouldn't wait to see if I could feel or see buildup. It's very subtle, and you'd see it in your hair's behaviour. SereneCurls is right about what you'd need to remove it.

    Please use a heat protectant.

Is there a reason why my low poo doesn't make my hair feel that cleansed like my sulphate shampoo does??? It has coco betain as second ingredient. It has aloe too in it. Could that be the reason?

Aloe vera in a shampoo will be rinsed out completely as it's water soluble.

Sulphate shampoos strip all the oils, butters and waxes on your hair including your own natural oils. We have been taught this feeling means clean hair when in fact if your hair has any curl to it you don't want this feeling.

Coco betaine shampoos and conditioner washing don't strip the hair of all oils especially natural ones even though your hair will be clean.

If you use non-water soluble silicones then you may need to use a sulphate shampoo at every wash.

So if you use products that contain a lot of waxes, oils and butters that build up then every x time period you are going to have to clarify by using a sulphate shampoo. The time period, x , could be every week if you have thin and fine hair ( which you don't have) to when you straighten your hair.

I suggest you deal with your hair by the way it styles curly. So if it styles fine for time period x when you are using a coco betaine shampoo or conditioner wash but at time y it looks funny, then every time y use a sulphate shampoo.

Hmm, it could be one of the ingredients. Which shampoo is it? If it's a local brand, you could post the ingredients.

As Blueblood said, a good sulfate free shampoo should leave the hair feeling clean but not squeaky clean or stripped of all moisture (as a sulfate shampoo can). If you mean that after low pooing, your hair still feels dirty or coated, that's a different issue and could be due to one or more ingredients in your low poo. Like SereneCurls said, if you'll list the ingredients for us, we can troubleshoot for you.

So I clarified because I thought I had some build up from a gel I tried and didn't like that had polyquat 4 and I used that low-poo but the frizz didn't go away. Could I be using too much protein in my condish and such? Or it wasn't enough to cleanse? My hair while wet wasn't frizz. Besides low-poo the only thing that was different was ploping overnight.

I would caution you about washing your hair regularly with a shampoo or CO containing 'cones because some can irritate the scalp or at the least cause dandruff in some people.

The real CG routine for wavies includes shampoo because most have oily scalps, so I really can't understand why you were saying you're "quitting"... It's really a misunderstanding of CG, probably propagated by those that never bothered to read the book or even read the summary found here, to believe that everyone is expected to co-wash only. What the author recommended was not using harsh shampoos, like those containing lauryl or laureth sulfate.

Also, she recommended for wavies to coat the length of the hair with CO prior to shampooing to avoid drying. And I would add that it's best to dilute any shampoo with at least 2 parts water in an applicator bottle, this way it gets much better distributed to the scalp and much less is needed.

Wavies rarely need any oil in their hair, especially during the warmer months when it can cause frizz,
adjustments in product usage must be done with each season just like it's done for the skin and the routine must not be blamed if some products cease to work for a while. If the macadamia oil product helped it could be because the heat from the curling wand caused some damage and now your hair really needed it, but it could also be because a lot of those "oils" (such as those by Garnier & L'Oreal) are mixed with 'cones.

To correct high porosity in hair, protein treatments is what you really need because hair is mainly made of protein. Some oils do help because they penetrate the hair thus giving it softness and flexibility. Silicones and polyquats can protect damaged hair by coating the nicks and gaps in the cuticle too but I feel they could buildup faster than proteins do.

So, basically, it really doesn't seem to me like you were following the right CG routine for your hair type and/or that you were misinformed...

Is it possible that my hair fed up from too much protein? even though it is high porosity? I know my hair is coarse but at the beginning it loved certain conditioners that were pure protein. My low porosity roots don't have a problem with protein which sounds weird.

Yes, absolutely. If you suspect protein overdose, back off on the protein and see if your hair improves. If you notice your curls going limp or your hair feeling mushy or overly soft, you can reintroduce protein. Remember, hair needs a balance of moisture and protein for optimal curls, though it can take a while to find that "balance" point and how to maintain it.

Could it be that you were so used to the "squeaky clean" feeling of your sulfate shampoo you just think it's not as clean now? Indications of not really being clean would be oily, dull, and/or flat hair. If any of those applies and you're using a gel it may be the "coco betaine" is not removing the residue from it, I don't think aloe would have anything to do with it.

I dunno about the squeaky clean but with normal shampoo hair feels only a little rough whilst with low poo it feels very rough in the shower when I run my hands through. With both, hair feels dry but low poo seems to make it drier. Maybe it's my idea or something. Like my cuticle has been raised more with low poo. Maybe it's the wrong poo for me as it's the only I have tried.

I want to try another one but the ones I looked through have polyquaternium 10 in.

I see now, every person knows how their hair should feel so I'm sure you're not imagining it. It may be that you'll just have to find a different shampoo then, but first it may be helpful to post the complete list of ingredients to see if any of us can identify the "trouble-maker" so when you choose another shampoo you can avoid it.

Unless I'm mistaken, KaZenner1990 already posted the ingredients for her low poo in the following post:

I use Timotei Organic Delight for shine

    Ingredients: Aqua,Cocamidopropyl Betaine,Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate,Sodium Cocoamphoacetate,Sodium Chloride,Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder*,Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract*,Tocopherol,Ascorbic Acid,Glycerin,Parfum,Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides Citrate,Coco-Glucoside,Glyceryl Laurate,Glyceryl Oleate,Coconut Acid,Citric Acid,Benzyl Alcohol,Salicylic Acid,Sorbic Acid,Potassium Sorbate,Citral,Limonene,*Ingredient from Organic Farming

The first ingredient that sticks out to me is the Sodium Chloride (table salt) as the 4th ingredient after water. Although it's used as a thickener here, salts (in general) can be drying. As the 4th ingredient, there's a lot of sodium chloride in this low poo.

In addition, benzyl alcohol and salicylic acid can both be drying. Although there isn't a lot of either in this particular product, they could be contributing to the drying effect from the salt.

    Hmmm I see!!!!

That is why I love co wash. I think it's not the conditioner you choose to cowash with only but also technique. Last time cg was a nightmare but now with barrel curls like this it makes me to want follow it even more. Here I have no.styler on. I admit that it's frizzy but I love the volume I have.
