My hair is unpredictable.

As the title says, my hair is very unpredictable. Occasionally it's smooth and nearly straight, sometimes full and wavy/curly, but often frizzy. It's naturally very thick and has lots of body. It grows fast.

Here are some pictures I snapped last night before bed. It actually looks quite good here. Oftentimes it's so poofy my hair appears triangle-shaped. I did just change my shampoo/conditioner, so maybe that's helping.

So basically, how do I discourage the frizz and try and get more defined, sleek curls/waves?

Sorry for the yellowness!

What products are you using and how do you apply them?

I usually just use shampoo and conditioner. I don't know the brands off the top of my head, but I'll check when I get home. Sometimes I use a product my hairdresser makes. It's a sort of hair lotion. I'll post the ingredients later, too.

I'm not against hair products, but it's hard to find anything I like. I'm super sensitive to smells, and most cosmetics smell really awful.

Well that's pretty awesome hair for just shampoo and conditioner!

Seriously consider making your own flax seed gel. There are lots of recipes around and YouTube videos. Or you can order it from Sweet Curls Elixir on Etsy. That way you control the smell. That would give you some nice definition. Another thought is coconut oil in your hair before you shampoo. You can do it overnight it just for a while before shampooing.

If you'd like to see some techniques and products I have some wavy hair tutorials I've posted a separate thread to here in the 2 forum.

I'm with you on smell. It's a deal breaker for me often. Seriously though I ignored the tons of flax seed gel recommendations when I first started but I've come to learn everyone is right that it's an awesome hair styler. If you want some more hold over it I really like Jessicurl Spiralicious (you can get Unscented) and you can even try some LA Looks Gel from the dollar store which works pretty well ( just go easy on it. Even mix a little into you FSG (flax seed gel) before applying.

It might also be helpful to you to learn about the Curly Girl method of hair care, which is one of the more popular methods of caring for curly/wavy/kinky hair. It's from the book Curly Girl: The Handbook (also available here).

Okay, so right now I'm using Earth Science Citress shampoo and I just started using Beautiful Curls Wavy to Curly conditioner. I'm not going to continue using the shampoo once I run out because I don't love the smell. I have EO Clarifying shampoo for when I'm done with the old shampoo.

In case you decide that you want to try the Curly Girl method, the shampoo you're currently using is not a low-poo, and the EO shampoo also looks quite harsh and sudsy, so perhaps not technically a full on shampoo, but not in the spirit of a real low-poo.

I just started reading the book, so I'm not at the hair care section yet.

Is Dr. Bronner's Castile soap good? I use it for my skin and I've used it for my hair in the past.

ETA: Jessicurl is actually local to me. he was going to speak in my HS economics class but had a dog emergency and cancelled. I've avoided buying her stuff because it's soooo expensive.

Her stuff is awesome. IMO worth the price. Especially Spiralicious. You can get samples for the price of shipping. I've heard that soap is pretty harsh in hair but I have no experience with it.

I'll pick up some Spiralicious tomorrow, then.

I've been looking at the Sweet Curls page, and I'm lost. I want to order from there, but it's quite confusing! Hopefully someone can point me towards what combo I should get for the FSG and any other products I could use.

My hair is very thick and naturally full. I have a lot of hair. It has a tendency to frizz, which is probably not helped by the humidity here. I *think* it has low porosity. It floats and is very slick. It's also quite soft.

Castile soap can be damaging to hair. It's much better to use a low-poo, if you feel the need for something more than a co-wash (washing with conditioner).

Jessicurl's products are excellent IMO, and Jess is a terrific person to do business with. My experience is that the products go a long way. You can also get samples, and travel sized bottles.

Okay, well I won't do that again! I have oily skin, and my scalp accumulates oil pretty fast. I shampoo every other day. If I go longer, it looks greasy and stringy and itches.

I shower at night because my hair takes so long to dry. With regards to products, should I put it in right out of the shower? Or should I wet down my hair in the morning and then put it in? Or do I need to suck it up and wake up early to do my hair?

I was looking on Amazon, and happened across the Deva Curl Low-Poo shampoo. It's significantly cheaper than Jessicurl. Is it good?

I like Jessicurls Gentle Cleanser (her no poo) better than the Deva but I use the Deva too because I can get it on the ground. But I think, personally, Jessicurl is better. For the rest you just have to experiment and see which way works for you regarding out of the shower, rewetting or actually washing etc. I can get a lot out of just spritzing the length down well and applying product on second and third day hair and then diffusing.

I like to shower at night too. I just do my regular hair thing, cover my pillow with a towel, scrunch my hair as I lay my head down, and my hair is usually at its best when I wake up, with all the crunch pre-scrunched out from whatever tossing and turning I've done overnight. On the rare occasions that it needs anything, a light spritzing with a plant mister filled with distilled water and conditioner (3:1) does the trick.

I got the Jessicurl Gentle Lather Shampoo in Island Fantasy. Light, very pleasant and natural scent. It actually happened to be on sale, so it was my lucky day!

My hair looks awesome. I have some product (Deva) on the way, and I can't wait to see how it looks with gel in! It's not frizzing or poofing out. It looks longer and sleeker than usual.IMG_08431_zpse9c38708.jpg

And I'm not yellow this time!
