Mold in my KCC Jar

Ewww I opened my KCC jar, which only had a tiny bit after about 2 or 3 weeks of not using it. The rim of the jar was covered in a green musty mold. It was disgusting. Has anyone else seen this?

How long have you had it?
I have never had this happen and I use it all the time but I go through my jars pretty quickly cuz I use it everyday. I guess it can happen if you have had it for a while b/c it is a natural product.
I have had it happen with an Aubrey Organics shampoo a few years ago that I kept for a while.
I would contact the owner and see if she can give you a refund or a replacement.

I haven't had this happen with my jar. I have a 2+ old jar that I got in a swap, and haven't used it all yet(since I alternate products). While I haven't seen any mold, the smell has changed alittle bit. It doesn't smell as pleasant as it used to, but it isn't bad.

When you used it, did you get water inside of the jar? Or get other product in there on accident? Sometimes with products, when they become contanimated with other stuff(be it water, or other product), it can get moldy.

The [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] has some of the stronger preservatives(I believe), so I'm still surprised that you still got mold. Unless, the formula has changed.

The same thing happened to me too. My jar was only a few months old because I was wearing twists for the winter because I normally use it daily. I've ordered at least 4 times and it never happened before. I threw it out and have been trying other products even though I love the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]. Plus I see she raised the price along with the $10 shipping fee so maybe this is the sign that I need to find something new.

I wrote Shelley from KCC. I've had the jar for about 5 months. I found it really weird since I had a 2 yr old jar from before which did not get any mold.
She replied by saying that since KCC is all natural it has a shorter shelf life than most products. I purchased mine from Ricky's NYC, since they started carrying it and I HATE paying expensive shipping.
Anyway, advised me to throw out the jar and she will send me a replacement. I'm also to supply her with the batch number at the bottom of the jar. Maybe there was something wrong with this particular batch.

I kept the product on top of my dresser and when I apply kcc I dont use any other products. I usually just leave condish in and I experimented twice w using some glossing drops. I found it weird that the mold was just at the top rim and not in the product itself.

i'll check mine 2nite. i don't use it at all really but figured i'd hold on to it in case i needed to pick it back up as my hair got longer. i guess that's the trade off w/ natural type products.

The thing is, the product isn't all natural. One of the preservatives is methylparaben, which is used as a mold inhibitor. Unless, the formula I have is different, this ingredient is used to not only extend the shelf life, but is used to prevent mold from appearing. It also has another paraben used to extend shelf life.

If the parabens don't contribute to the products shelf like, Shelley may need to put a disclaimer letting people know what the products shelf life is so that they know the recommended usage in reference to shelf life.

I really hope that you all just got a couple of bad batches. It's a good product, so once you get your replacement foxycus02, please let us know what happens.

Its a good product by no means. This didnt happen to my old jar which was def over a yr old, so maybe it was a bad batch. The recipe mightve changed as well with the new packaging. I remember the first bottle I had smelled really sweet and it had a distinct scent.
This jar smells like vanilla and the color was pretty much clear. Here are the ing listed on this jar. Keep in mind this refer to the White Jar with the pink letters. Not the jar w the black top and pasted on label:
botanical infusion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallows, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, tocopheryl acetate, pectin, citric acid, potassium sorbate and natural fragrance.

I hope this thread didnt discourage anyone from trying it. Overall its a great product and I would repurchase.

Oh okay. Thanks for the ingredients, Foxy. She did change the ingredients abit. The older one I have actually has preservatives, in addition to the ingredients you posted(minus the potassium sorbate). The newer version is more natural. It has Vitamin E to help preserve it, but that will only extend its shelf life, I believe, to between 4-6 months. Most people can go for more than a year with this product since it doesn't require much to use.

You may have to start putting the custard in your refrigerator once it gets past the 6 month mark, just in case.

I'm sure no one was deterred from trying it out. It's a good product, so hopefully they'll be able to address the mold issues.

Is it possible the jar was already an older batch when you purchased it from the store?

My sister had an old jar for over a year and there didn't seem to be any problems with it.

But, I'm glad they're replacing your product even though you bought it somewhere else--very cool!

I hope you like the new jar better!
