Masterpiece!

I really enjoyed the thread for Downton Abbey, and now I'm wondering if anyone is planning on watching the second season of Mr. Selfridge that starts tonight on Masterpiece?

I saw an interview with Jeremy Piven where he says that the beginning skips ahead, I'm curious about this since the season left off with so many things in the air.

I didn't get to watch it last night but I plan on watching it soon! I really enjoyed that show. It is a lot like The Paradise, so I tend to get them confused. I am so excited that Call The Midwife is back too!

I have not watched The Paradise or Call the Midwife. I did try out Amazon Prime and have added Lark Rise to Candleford to my watch list based on other things you've said in the Downton thread, Danigirl!

I'm really having a hard time telling myself that i don't need to keep Prime because of all of the shows available that I can watch without trying to convince my other family members that I NEED the T.V., lols. I'm slowly realizing that I've been missing out by eschewing Masterpiece/PBS programming.

Girl, I am addicted to Masterpiece/PBS. When we had our first apartment, we didn't have cable or anything, so that's what I would watch most of the time on Sundays. Now, I record practically everything and watch at my leisure. I just love the differences of the time periods compared to today. Very stimulating both intellectually and visually.

I finished Season 2 of Mr Selfridge last week. I really enjoy it. I watched most of both seasons of The Paradise and liked it too, tho not as much. I guess it's been cancelled and won't have another season? But I watched the last episode and like how it ended.
Love Downton (tho I loved the earlier seasons more than the later ones) and Lark Rise too.
I've been a BBC fan for decades. I've been watching EastEnders since it began almost 30 years ago. And all the old comedies were great tv.

It's very rare I give up on a tv series once I've started watching, but Mr Selfridge was one. I think I lasted about three episodes and found it too irritating somehow.

I could never get into Mr. Selfridge for some reason. I wanted to mention if you have a Roku box PBS has a great app. It may not carry ALL the shows they have though so check it out before you ditch prime.

    I've been watching this season!

I have been eh about it but still watching. I'm kind of glad that Agnes Towler is not at this point ending up with Henri. I don't know why but I just like her with Victor.

I'm so happy for Miss Mardle. Her story line at the end of season one was so messed up.

I agree! I really like Victor. And I'm glad Miss Mardle is doing so well this season. I was so upset that he married someone else! But, I think she's better off now, and he knows he was wrong.

I'm not sure how to feel about Delphine Day or what she's up to with Harry. Also, don't like what's happening while Harry is away. He shouldn't have gone. I'd hate to see his wife being played by a "friend." However, I feel like Delphine always had an ulterior motive.

As for Lord Loxley......I really hope something happens to that man. Can't stand him! But, I guess that's the point.

There are so many things happening this season, but still, it is one of those shows that I just watch to keep up with. I'm not on the edge of my seat or dying to see it each week.

I'm not much of a fan of Miss Day either. She is seeming to have ulterior motives either for her business gains or personal gains via Harry.

I also agree about Mr. Grove- then the way he tried to reprimand her about the Belgian violinist. That jerk. I was sad that she was starting to shy away- but very glad when she opened up to him about it last night.

I wonder how Henri Leclare's story will progress? I will be glad to be rid of Mr. Thackery or for him to have a change of heart.

What were your thoughts on Frank Edwards? Do you think he will end up speaking up for Harry?

As for Loxley, I do hope Harry gives Lady May a chance to help burn him. I know she isn't the most innocent character but she is not so bad that she deserves the treatment she's getting from him.

I agree with all that you have said. I too wonder how Henri's story line will progress. And I so dislike Mr. Thackery. I don't know if he will truly have a change of heart, but something needs to happen. He's just so pompous and selfish.

I hope Frank Edwards ends up speaking up for Harry. I would like to think that deep down, he has a soft spot for Harry and their friendship and that he will, but I know he's a businessman and takes his work very seriously. Maybe Kitty will have some influence on him.

I REALLY hope Lady May has a chance to help burn him. She wasn't the most like-able character at the start of the show, but I feel bad for her. She has to put up with so much crap from him. That one episode where he was waiting in her bedroom made my skin crawl.

First I don't know how I missed that it was the season finale on Sunday!

I'm a tiny bit sad that Agnes' character was switched back to Henri at the end. I do hope that Victor finds happiness- he is so much more a part of her family. Although I was hoping she wouldn't have to leave the storyline- I guess Henri being off to war insures that she will still be in the picture.

I am SO proud of Frank Edwards!!! Consequently I am eager to see if he and Kitty Hawkins end up working out. I am glad that he was also able to repair things with Lady May and that her storyline is looking better. Her transformation has been wonderful.

I am worried about Rose's health but glad that she took Lady May's advice about Delphine Day. Did you watch any of the featurettes on the real Mr. Selfridge that aired after the finale and some of the other episodes? I don't think I should have watched it because it was a spoiler for how the entire story ends at least for Harry and Rose. It was also something that got me thinking about the one blond shop girl and Harry's Son Gordon. Their story is quite overlooked, and therefore intriguing to me.

I love that Miss Mardle was able to talk to Florian about why she was trying to send him away. I really do hope that they end up together. Mr. Grove is getting on my nerves a little bit with his hypocrisy then seeming to change his mind now that he has his son. Kind of a, oh well I married this younger woman so she could give me a son then it looked like the plan didn't work so I'll try to control you again but when I got my son I no longer care, run on type of sentence scenario.

First I don't know how I missed that it was the season finale on Sunday!

I know, I didn't realize until they posted it up on my Facebook page and said it was the season finale. So sad it is over!

I'm a tiny bit sad that Agnes' character was switched back to Henri at the end. I do hope that Victor finds happiness- he is so much more a part of her family. Although I was hoping she wouldn't have to leave the storyline- I guess Henri being off to war insures that she will still be in the picture.

I agree. I think Victor is such a great character. I think it was only a matter of time before she finally switched to Henri, but I just don't feel a connection there like I do with Victor. I believe Victor truly loves her but I'm conflicted with Henri. I wonder if he'll come back from war?.....

I am SO proud of Frank Edwards!!! Consequently I am eager to see if he and Kitty Hawkins end up working out. I am glad that he was also able to repair things with Lady May and that her storyline is looking better. Her transformation has been wonderful.

I love Lady May's transformation! We see that she is so much deeper than what she was initially made out to be. I am happy to see that she is away from Lord Loxley too. What a devious character. And Frank Edwards, I am very happy that he ended up doing the right thing. His character has started growing on me, and I hope him and Kitty end up together. They seem to go together so well.

I did watch it.....unfortunately. Lol. I am so sad to see how Harry and Rose's story ends, although I think it is somewhat different than real life (it is my understanding she didn't really have a warning). I am so sad about her! Just when they were getting their lives back on track and their relationships was becoming strong again. I'm glad Lady May warned Harry and that he stood up to Delphine and said that he basically would never cross that line again, especially not with her. It was a great moment.

I agree! I hope they end up together as well, and I'm glad she was able to confront her feelings about him and come clean. Mr. Grove was seriously pissing me off! I was so upset that he even had the nerve to say something about her relationships when he was guilty of the exact same thing. Only, he married her! And dumped poor Miss Mardle quicker than anything. I feel like he's feeling like he loves her again because he was so exhausted by his home life. Like you said, he was not sure he made the right choice and started to think that he could control her again. I wonder if he would have cheated on his current wife with her if she would have allowed it? I don't know. I'm glad that he realized what a jerk he was being. I do wonder if he'll go back down that road when things get tough at home again though?

I watched it this season, including the finale, and again really liked it. I heard Jeremy Piven say on something the other day that there will be a Season 3 and that he loves it and hopes it will go on and on for a long time - as long as they can keep it fresh and not too far from the true story.

I've really enjoyed Lady May's change, too - and that the nasty Loxley got his comeuppance :evil4: And I liked that Miss Mardle finally quit letting Grove's comments and attitude matter to her - many women still have a hard time in her circumstances, so imagine how brave and difficult it would've been to throw caution to the wind back then!

Someone mentioned above that they thought The Paradise had been cancelled, but one local PBS station had an all-day marathon Sunday, just as they did before Downtown Season 4 started, so I'm thinking a new season must be about to start.

I hate that the British TV seasons are so darned short - just as I'm really getting into one of these shows, it's over!

You are right about Agnes switching back to Henri...even if I didn't like it. I guess if Henri doesn't come back from the War, that would clear the way for Victor again but I wonder if they will really write him that way? Third times the charm?

What were your thoughts on the newspaper article showcasing Agnes, and Thackery showing off yet getting nothing?

Frank Edwards character is growing on me too; along with Kitty's character this whole season. Something about those two being together has made him seem more human or down to Earth or something; and her to seem less catty. Was it the finale or last weeks episode that Kitty and Miss Mardle had a moment of solidarity? I really loved that they were able to connect, and hope that they can develop more of a friendship or a more friendly work relationship.

I had been getting so hopeful for Rose and Harry too, only for that to happen.

As for Mr. Grove- I think my irritation with him is coloring this but yes I believe he would have continued their affair even before he married if she had allowed it. I think he has the power to do it if things get tough down the road too, but I don't think he will. I wonder if his doubts were stemming from the fact that he chose the younger woman thinking he'd get his son faster. Only it took, what, 4 children to get there? He has forever lost Miss Mardle, thank goodness. Her character transformation of becoming softer and more feminine has been one that I've loved too.

Before this series I had never heard of Selfridge's. And now I here it in everyday life, not often but every once in awhile. The other day Twiggy was on HSN and said she had just gone to Selfridge's to buy something. : )

I thought it was weird how they showcased Agnes but didn't give him anything. I know a woman was writing it and was looking for a story to inspire other women, but I just thought it was a little over the top. Then again, they'll need something to keep the feud going between those too (although it is mainly one sided).

I too think that Frank Edwards and Kitty bring out something good in each other. I liked how that blossomed this season, and I absolutely adored the part with Kitty and Miss Mardle. I was pleased to see them getting along and being friends.

I really hope that they don't try the whole Victor and Agnes thing any more. I'm just sad that the Italian lady got away. At least then he would have had someone!

As for Mr. Grove. I think they should just turn him into a family man now. He's moved on from Miss Mardle, so he should turn to his family. It will be interesting to see where they go though. I think he knows he made a mistake and that's what matters. Hopefully he can have his own happiness with his son (and daughters hopefully).

Before this series I had never heard of Selfridge's. And now I here it in everyday life, not often but every once in awhile. The other day Twiggy was on HSN and said she had just gone to Selfridge's to buy something. : )

Funny how that works out! Now, I want to put it on the places to see before I die list.

Danigirl, I keep thinking about you! I got an Amazon Prime membership and I started watching Lark Rise to Candleford. I love that show now too, lols! I'm on season 2 and just finished the first episode when the actress who also plays Lady Rosamund from Downton is a character.

Will anyone be following the Masterpiece Mystery series of shows that will start next week and go through November?

YES!!!! I'm glad to you like it! It is very addicting. I'm not sure what season I am on, I just watch it as it airs on PBS. I think I've seen the episode you're talking about though!

I plan on following all of the Masterpiece Mystery shows that are starting to air next week. I love them!!!

I changed the title of the thread so that I wouldn't end up making new threads for what is essentially Masterpiece programming. Okay, now let's take a moment to laugh with me (or at me- I sure did laugh at myself). I watched both episodes of "The Escape Artist" and at first I had to check to see if I had the right station when it started! I hadn't watched Masterpiece Mystery! so I wasn't familiar with the show song. I don't really know why I was expecting the brass intro from Masterpiece Classic, lols. I mean I had even listened to a show talking about the Masterpiece revamp on NPR to know the difference.

That being said, I was not expecting the end of The Escape Artist, but then I also didn't realize that the main characters nickname was The Escape Artist. I was thinking that Escape artist referred to Foyle- but I guess that was some of the point of it being a mystery. He did have the obvious creepy factor going on for him. The whole feeding the birds scenes with him weirded me out, and I don't think I fully understood the purpose of having them. I was relieved that he didn't kill Sophie Okenedo's character but unsettled that David Tennants character turned out having to be so evil to be able to stop Foyle.

I am really taking advantage of my forgetting to cancel my Amazon Prime membership before my 30 days were up too- I caught up on Endeavour over the last week or so. I like Inspector Morse's character a lot and how he is so perceptive. I hope the upcoming shows are just as intriguing.

I haven't gotten to watch The Escape Artist yet. And I'm looking forward to Endeavor when it comes back. I really love the Inspector Morse character as well. I think my favorite is Inspector Lewis though. I love that show! I'm hoping to watch The Escape Artist this weekend.

I just love Masterpiece Mystery. Well, anything Masterpiece really. =)
