The great lip crayon experiment 2014 (updated 2/2016!)

jeepcurlygurljeepcurlygurl Posts: 19,250Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
I have been searching for a replacement for my favorite discontinued lip crayon. It is the only lip color I've used for years and years. Please feel free to add any others that you think I might like to try!!

Various colors can have different properties, staying power, etc, but for this test I used shades of pink from all brands.
The first price listed is what I paid on Ebay. The price in parentheses is the approx retail price. If there is only one price that means I bought it directly from the company).

The pic is of the 1st 9 I reviewed (minus the one that Todd knocked off the counter and rolled under the frig).

1. WET N WILD MEGASLICKS (DISCONTINUED)
These used to sell around $3 but have been selling on Ebay for $10 and up. I did just find and buy a few at $2.50 each, so I will still have a small hoard of them.
This has long lasting color, doesn’t bleed, neutral smell and taste.
A favorite for many years and still better than any of the others tested.

2. WET N WILD MEGASLICKS BALM STAIN
$3 ($3)
Neutral smell and taste. A nice moist look and feel, made my lips feel plumper.
The only one with a snap tight lid so no chance of it opening in purse or makeup bag. It gets extra points for that. I would buy this again.

3. REVLON COLOR BURST LACQUER BALM
$5 ($7)
Nice minty smell and taste. Has a nice little shimmer. I would buy this again.

4. REVLON JUST BITTEN BALM STAIN
$5 ($7)
Nice minty smell and taste. Nice matte finish. I would buy this again.

5. NEUTROGENA MOISTURESMOOTH COLOR STICK
$8 ($9)
Nice watermelon smell and taste. A nice moist look and feel. I would buy this again.

6. CLINIQUE CHUBBY STICK COLOUR BALM
$8 mini ($10 mini, $17 full size)
Neutral smell and taste. Nice matte finish but did feel slightly drying. Nice. I would buy it again if cheaper.

7. TARTE LIPSURGENCE LIP TINT
$7 mini ($10 mini, $24 full size)
Nice minty smell and taste. Had a nice satiny shimmer and nice feel. If this wasn’t so expensive, I would buy it again.

8. HARD CANDY LIP PENCIL
$3 ($5)
Waxy feel, taste, and smell. Muddy color. Would not buy again.

9. J.CAT LIP PENCIL $3 ($4)
Odd muddy color when applied. Felt a bit drying. Would not buy again.

ETA 2 more reviews -

Flower Beauty Velvet Lip - $8 ($8.) nice matte finish, a little drying, which is pretty normal with matte lip product. I would buy this again if cheaper.

NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil - $4 ($4 ), nice creamy finish but doesn't have staying power. Has to be sharpened with a pencil sharpener instead of being retractable so I wouldn't buy again.

ETA 2 more -

Avon Ultra Color Lip Crayon - $8 A light bubble gum scent, nice coverage, I wish it was a tad creamier, but all in all I like it and if I could find it a bit cheaper I would buy again.

Mary Kay At Play Lip Crayon - $6 ($10) This is the most like my old Wet n Wild lip crayons in texture, feel, coverage, and performance plus it has a nice light berry scent. Really like this one. Too bad it's not retractable and has to be sharpened with a pencil sharpener. Otherwise we would have a winner. So close!!

ETA 1 more -
NYC City Proof Twistable Crayons $4 ($5). I liked this tho it was more sheer than I like. But that can change from color to color so I might try another shade.

ETA 1 more - LA Colors All in One lipstick, blush, eyeshadow $1 at Dollar Tree. It only seems to come in Pink Satin which is a nice color but I wish it came in a darker shade. I like the texture and coverage, it is a twist up tube which is a must. It has a perfumy smell and taste that I don't really like but for a dollar I would buy it again.

ETA 1 more - Ulta Lip Crayon $5. This is one of my favorites. Love the formula and coverage, nice light scent and taste, good staying power. I will try some more colors of this for sure. Got 3 more colors of this and love them all. They are on sale at Ulta for $4. This is a new favorite brand.

ETA 1 more - Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm (a mini came in my IPSY bag this month), nice minty scent and taste, I prefer full coverage and these are a bit sheer, but still nice.

ETA 2 more, both from E.L.F.
Jumbo Lip Gloss Stick. $2 Lots of pigment but still a little sheer, twist up tube, light minty taste, nice for the price.

Studio Matte Lip Color jumbo lip pencil, $3, twist up tube with locking cap, nice minty taste, not super drying considering it's a matte finish, color lasts a long time. I've only tried it in Wine which I loved and will order some more colors. Love this one.

Glad you posting this! I'm thinking out of those I'll try the wet n' wild and the Neutrogena since I tried the Revlon and didn't like the minty flavor. Also the matte Revlon looked horrible on my lips.

I love Cliniques Chubby Sticks. I use the shadows and lipsticks. They are great. I once tried the Wet & Wild & I think a Cover Girl and had a horrible reaction. They burned my lips.

Another crayon I have tried that you do not have on your list is from Drew B's Flower makeup line. It's the Lip Suede Velvet Chubby's. I love them as much as the Chubby Sticks. It's around $8, I believe. Good colors. Flower also has a blush & lip stick combo. It's hit and miss for me. Okay for cheeks (the Maybelline NY cream blush sticks are way better) but a little on the powdery side for lips.

Flower is available at Wal-mart, but they don't carry it in my local store. You can do a search on WM site to see if it is carried near you or not.

What? There is a mini Tarte lipsurgence??? I've never seen them. WANT! I am very much liking the Beauty Bit Lush Lip Tint I got at Sephora. 24$ though. However the best color selection i've seen.

^ I will look for the Flower brand!

I like it. I was looking for a deeper berry, and found exactly what I needed. I did not look to see if they have different finishes. As you can tell by the name, the one I bought is more on the satin-matte side. It goes on smoothly. I normally put on a touch of Chapstick and give it a bit to sink it before I do the crayon so I've not found it drying.

I am not sure if the Clinique has different finishes or not. I know they have some on the sheer side and some that have stronger color. Mine are Intense Moisture and I have not had problem with them, but again I do the chapstick.

Ohhhh yeah. Shea Moisture makeup looks like it will have crayons. They told me they are coming out in Target this week. I know my Target was redoing the Beauty department when I was there Wednesday. (Also PS they have Carol's Daughter and more Jane Carter stuff now). See this "peek" from last month.

I like the Neutrogena lip crayons. They have sort of a fruity flavor and I find them pretty moisturizing. However, they're a tad shimmery. I prefer something with less shimmer and a little more shine. I have the number 80-Rich Raisin, which is kind of a pinky-red color, but I'm looking for deeper colors that go well with my olive-tan skin. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!:toothy4:

I only tried pink shades so I have no suggestions for darker colors. But if you are interested in crayons without shimmer you might try the REVLON JUST BITTEN BALM STAIN or the CLINIQUE CHUBBY STICK COLOUR BALM.

I added 1 more review today and I still have a few I'd like to try, Elf being one of them.

Thank you, Jeep. I've heard good things about the Clinique Chubby Sticks, but I have more of a Revlon budget. I tried the Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm, but I really don't like minty nor matte lip products. (Oily skin, but dry lips.)

I also tried the ELF. They have one called "Sangria Starters" that looks brown, but goes on a little "orange-y" on me. (It looks better if I fill in with a brown lip liner first.) The only problem with this ELF crayon is that it has parabens, which I normally try to avoid. :sad11:

OK, Jeep, have you tried the Ulta lip crayons?
I went the other day and I was able to get a 2 for 1 deal (usually $8.00 each). I think I may have found a good brown one (Sugar & Spice).
They're nice and creamy, not matte nor glossy nor shimmery. The colors don't always seem to match the outside of the crayon, but they go on well (neither too much color nor invisible).
If I can get another 2 for 1, then I need to go back and try out a couple purples. :toothy6:

I'd love to find some nice warm neutral ones that are medium in tone, at the drugstore. I thought I had found one with Jordana's lip crayon in Terra Crave, but unfortunately it turned PINK and too bright on my lips not long after I put it on:( I'm NOT a pink lipstick gal at all with my coloring. But over on MUA, some other people commented that the Jordana crayons, almost no matter what shade, tended to do this. Fine if one want bright pink lips though! However, the Revlon Lip Lacquer one in Coy looks promising - maybe I'll try that one.:)

So it's been awhile since I last updated! I've given away all the lip crayons I didn't like and have pretty much used up the ones I liked that I use almost every day. I have a couple darker shades that I don't use as often so they are still in good shape. I am down to my last 2 Wet & Wild Megaslicks, the original discontinued one that is still my favorite, so that gives me anxiety. : )

I went on ebay to order some new ones and found some Tarte Lipsurgent for decent prices and I just got them in the mail and am happy with them all! I liked this brand in my original experiment but they are pretty pricey for my taste but otherwise they were high on my list of favorites. I like all the shades and finishes that I got.
Fancy - matte berry, Alluring - matte mauve pink, and Blushing Bride - plum rose. 2 are minis, which are pretty large in this brand, and 1 is full size and all 3 were $24.87 with free shipping so not bad at all.

I've always wanted to try the Tarte ones, but I find I always think I'll use lip colors then never do and always fall right back to my Burt's Bees pomegranate lip balm. I got rid of so many lip crayons when we moved because I bought them with great intentions and never used them.

Where do you ladies dispose of your unwanted makeup? I'm always looking for recipients, because I am insane and almost always fall for good packaging.
