The No Waste Challenge

Hey all!

Today as I was looking at my baskets of hair products, I decided to challenge myself and slow down the product junkie inside of me. I see all the hair products I have and don't use half of them. Yet, I get sick of what I do have, and then go buy more which then turns into this cycle of wasted products.

I am sure this has been done before, but I challenge all you guys to gather all the products you have and use them. Don't buy anymore until everything you have is gone. Personally, I feel I waste so much and I want to start taking what I have, appreciating it, and using it. I think we should all post here: What you ended up using, how you used it, and your thoughts on whether you liked your hair with the products or not. I think this can help people get creative with what they have and help save some money. Plus, the reward is once the products are all gone, you can get more! HAHA!

Today, I co-washed with my kiwi lime squeeze (V05) and then I detangled with my Aussie moist & kiwi lime. Both of them had pumps so it was awesome! I then rinsed all the conditioner out. After, I added literally 1 pump of the aussie moist and 1 pump of the kiwi lime. I am trying to see if the least amount of product will assist with my fine hair not being weighed down (that has been a frequent problem).

Afterwards, I did the sunkissalba finger coiling technique. I used my Organix mousse and coiled. I then used a little jojoba oil on my ends.

Also, last night, I did a Coconut oil treatment.

My hair is drying now, I slightly diffused.

I will try to do this! Been using my Shea Moisture baby shampoos as body/hand washes to get rid of them... they are almost gone.

I used my YTCucs shampoo today, because I had silicone in my hair. I just bought Eden Cowash so I used that after the shampoo just to try it out. I used KCKT as leave in, SM Smoothie over that, and then KCCC and diffused to about 60%. I'm finding this with new cut, diffusing to less than 80% is a lot better for my curls so they don't spring up as tight on the topmost layers.

Thats an excellent idea with using the shampoos as body and hand washes! Love it! This is great, thank you so much for sharing. I find that your experience with how much to diffuse will be very helpful for others. I can't diffuse 100% either.

Even though I like it I'm going to use up my HETT gel BEFORE I try out Miss Jessie's Jelly Soft Curls...I'm down to one bottle of shampoo and conditioner that I'm using now. I have about 4 bottles of VO5 that will have to wait till summer. I have a feeling I'll be able to cowash in higher dews.
I'm going to go ahead and say 3a
    fine/medium texture and a bit porous-I color
Spring routine: Renpure luxurious argan oil shampoo/Loreal Advanced Care Color conditioner , HETT gel
    Microfiber towel/diffuse
    Trying KKCC

Yes definitely do whatever order you need. I mean if you don't have any more conditioner than of course buy more. Its more so to use what you have and to not buy what you don't need. Can't wait to hear more about your products :)

I really should partake in this! I have too many shampoos & conditioners sitting around that I'm not using when I really should just get rid of them (without wasting them). In fact, I placed a big order with CurlMart last week even though I hadn't run out of stuff yet.

Here's a little list of stuff I need to finish before buying anything else (includes stuff that I ordered from CM):

    Shampoos
    Desert Essense Tea Tree Shampoo
    Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Shampoo*
Kinky-Curly Come Clean* (too harsh, will probably use this as a bodywash - I love that suggestion, ha!)

    Conditioners
    Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner
    Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner
    Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Conditioner*
Milk + Honey Tangle free Pudding

    Protein Treatment
    Curl Junkie Repair Me!

    Oils / Sealers
    Delon Coconut Oil*
    Delon Argan Oil*
    AO Jojoba Oil
    HPO Happy Scalp
Sunny Isle Jamaican Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

    Stylers
    Mop Top Curly Custard
Milk + Honey Hair Custard* (which was way too heavy for my hair.. I should probably figure some kind of other usage for it, maybe it could serve as a pre-poo?)
    KCCC
    KCSS

I'm thinking about bringing some things (marked with a *) over to a friend of mine, to see if she has any use for it, because they were either too harsh, or too heavy for my hair or ended up containing cones, like the Delon oils.
    xox Marieke // Whisperes

2c (on top) & 3b high density, low porosity, fine, protein craving curls

Pre-poo & sealant: HPO Happy Scalp, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Co-wash: Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner
Protein Treatment & Deep Conditioner: CJ Repair Me!, Spiral Solutions Protein Treatment
    Rinse-out: CJ Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner
    Detangler: KCKT
Styling: KCSS, Mop Top Curly Custard

I really like that idea too. If there's some stuff that you just know won't work with your hair then giving to a friend is a great idea! It takes it off your hands without it being a total waste. Sometimes if I don't like something I will give to my sister and shell end up loving it. Its a great way to pass it on. Awesome!!

I resisted the temptation to buy a CJ conditioner tonight. Arrgghghghh.. Ok, maybe when half my stash is gone :D

I used up a product tonight! - Shea Moisture Red Bush & Babassu Baby Wash - I use this and the Chamomile & Argan Oil one for hand soap. Not my first choice, but I want rid of it. I will not repurchase these, they are very harsh on the skin and didn't do anything for my hair.

Wow I thought I had a lot of products! lol

This is a very timely post and I'm definitely! I was in Target last night in need of a low poo and resisted the temptation to buy anything because I have a JC low poo on the way (it's just sitting in North Hosuton waiting to be sent out to me! Come on Monday!)I've been using KCCC but it's a sulfate shampoo and even though I love it, I'm worried I'm damaging my hair using it for every wash. I have a bottle of Mop Top shampoo that I don't like but in my haste used it last night. I had to emulsify it A LOT to make it work, so I was putting basically nothing but bubbles in my hair. This could work for me, occasionally. And I have to use so much that there's hope I will finish the bottle.

Using up my Shea Moistuere may be a challenge for me haha. It was the first CG conditioner I bought. My husband, bless him, thinking he was being nice, saw the conditioner in the shower and bought TWO more bottles of SM conditioner. So now I have three bottles of pretty much never used conditioner that hates my hair. I can't stand to see them go to waste so I've been thinking of using them as a pre poo on sulfate days. What do you guys think?

    Shampoo: JC Gentle Lather Shampoo
    Mop Top Gentle Shampoo
KCCC - already on second bottle of this so I may have to buy
More since it's objective is different than the low poos.
Carol's Daughter Rosemary Mint Clarifying Shampoo

Conditioner: Mop Top Daily Conditioner (love)
    SM Coconut and Hibiscus Conditioner
2 SM Shea Butter Restorative Conditioners

    Leave In: KCKT (holy grail)

Deep Treatment: Macadamia Deep Repair Masque

    Stylers: AG Beach Bomb
    AG re:coil
Mop Top Light Hold (sample size)
    KC Curly Custard
    KC Spiral Spritz
    LA Looks Sports Gel
    SM Hold and Shine Spray

The SM spray, I have to say, I find unusable. May have to gift that one. It leaves a weird coating and dries out my hair. Yuck.

    And that's it! Game on!
2C/3A, high porosity, low density, fine-medium

Low Poo: Jessicurl Gentle Cleansing Shampoo, Mop Top Gentle Shampoo
Clarify: Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying, KCCC
RO/CoWash: Mop Top Daily Conditioner, Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut
    LI: KCKT
Stylers: AG re:coil, AG Beach Bomb, Mop Top Light Hold Anti-Frizz Gel, LA Looks Xtreme Sport
PT: Curl Junkie Repair Me, IAgirl's gelatin treatment (awesome!)

    Hair LOVES proteins!

That is a pretty big list sixelamy! Good luck finishing that! :o
I'd been looking at the Yes to blackberries conditioner myself, I'd be tempted to ask you how you like it, but since this is a no waste challenge, I better restrain myself. :p

I was able to give a bunch of stuff to my friend with "easy-peasy" (as she calls it) straight & color treated hair so that helps with making my list smaller- and allowing myself to buy something new sooner, heh. Or is that besides the point? :D

    I gave away:
    Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Shampoo
    Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Conditioner
    Delon Coconut Oil
    Delon Argan Oil
    Milk + Honey Hair Custard
and a bottle of Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Body Lotion as well as a bunch of nail polish I don't wear.

Use it as a pre-poo or you can also use it for shaving, or possibly even a light body lotion.

Excellent! You can do this. Also think about different ways to use these products too. With the shea moisture products, sometimes I use certain ones as stylers. For instance, I have the SM curl and style conditioner and I used it as a styler rather than a conditioner. BTW, gorgeous hair!

Carol's Daughter Rosemary Mint Clarifying Shampoo

Conditioner: Mop Top Daily Conditioner (love)
    SM Coconut and Hibiscus Conditioner
2 SM Shea Butter Restorative Conditioners

    Leave In: KCKT (holy grail)

    Stylers: AG Beach Bomb
    AG re:coil
Mop Top Light Hold (sample size)
    KC Curly Custard
    KC Spiral Spritz
    LA Looks Sports Gel
    SM Hold and Shine Spray

The SM spray, I have to say, I find unusable. May have to gift that one. It leaves a weird coating and dries out my hair. Yuck.

    And that's it! Game on!

I definitely understand if you just can't use a product. I believe giving to someone is the best alternative. That was a very sweet gesture of your husband! It seems that the SM products are on a theme on here of wanting to get rid of! haha. That must tell us something...

GOOD FOR YOU! If it's not do-able pass it on! :)

And yes, honestly this is hypocritical, but it's like I want to use all my stash, so then I can go and get more. But then I do not have to feel guilty!! LOL

I am almost done with my Suave Trop. Coconut. I think I might use the rest to shave my legs, thanks to you wonderful ladies for the idea! :)

I ended up using the 1 pump aussie and 1 pump V05 yesterday. I really liked how my hair came out. I am coming to the realization that I really don't need much leave in conditioner.

I am also beginning a hair journal where I write how I like my hair everyday and what I used. I don't wash everyday, but it can help me evaluate what products did well over the course of a few days and vice versa. Hopefully, this will be a semi-accurate way to figure what products are worth buying again when it comes to that time.

I will be graying my products out that I use up and rating them with a thumbs up or thumbs down to whether or not I liked them. It'd be a great quick reference!

I think I will start using up products that I don't have a whole lot left of to start. Since it seems I'm wearing my hair straight more than I am curly, it shouldn't matter too much if they weigh me down or not. Use 'em up!

Lol... thanks, I need it! I think you mean Yes to Blueberries? I absolutely love it, it's one of my favorites. But don't let that tempt you ;)

Haha, oh shucks! For some reason I often mix those two up.

And I'll try not too. I better avoid the natural hair care aisle in Fred Meyer next time I go grocery shopping though. ;)

I think that is another great idea and a tip for others. It's pretty much like staring basic to more complex. Or starting small to large.

I have just recently jumped on the wavy-wagon and have been hoarding new hair products like crazy, trying to find the perfect products for my wavy routine.

    Shampoos:
    - Avalon Organics Lavender shampoo
    - Herbina deep-cleansing/clarifying shampoo (local brand, Im not sure if it even has official name in English)

    Conditioners:
    - Tresemme Naturals conditioner
    - Nature's Gate Pomegranate conditioner
    - Stonybrook Botanicals uncented conditioner (ok stuff, contains cones though...)
    - Noname lavender conditioner of local pennysaver shop chain (Bought this at random because it was so cheap. To my surprise this is actually really nice stuff and it's cheaper than dirt! No cones, sulfates, silicones or perfume. Very moisturizing.)

    Styling products:
    - Tresemme Volume & Lift hairspray
    - Fourty Reasons hairspray

    - Beautiful Curls Shea Butter Curl Defining Gel for wavy to curly (absolutely love this stuff!)
    - Matrix Curl Definition hair gel
    - Rainbow generic hair gel
    - NEW: Kinky Curly Curling Custard

    - Cien Volume styling mousse

    Other:
    - Herbina MarjaSpa heat protecting spray
    - Lifehair Oliivi leave-in conditioner spray
    - Lifehair Aroma Therapy leave-in conditioner spray (contains cones, great if I want to blowdry hair straight)
    - Biozell Argan oil serum (contains helluva lot cones, makes my hair limp and greasy looking, can be used in tiny amounts on the ends before shower if I want to straighten hair afterwards, but this I may have to put in the bin if Im not able to give it away to anyone)
    - Gazette of Sweden Crush 6 Pineapple Hair Pack (hair mask)
    - NEW Jane Carter Solution curl defining cream

    GRAND TOTAL:
    5 shampoos, 9 conditioners, 10 styling products, 5 other.

In total 29 jars of stuff!

Im shocked and ashamed of myself. I have come a long way from the point where I was some years ago: The only thing I used in the shower was 1 bar of soap and no styling or blowdrying, nothing. Most likely Im not gonna return to that, but I still could easily cut the amount of products by 70%. If I just wasn't so jumpy with trying to find the perfect products and shoving the so-so stuff into to the dark depths of the storage closet... Guess this is a very common problem wavies and curlies have :D

Luckily most of the products is gonna be tolerable to use up, but what to do with the silicone-laden stuff? Maybe I should just tolerate the limpness from time to time or straighten my hair on occasion? It'll still take forever to use them up that way though.

    UPDATE - used up products:
    - Yves Rocher Botanical Hair Care Oat shampoo
    - Yves Rocher Botanical Hair Care Oat conditioner x 2
    - Rainbow generic uncented styling mousse
    - Loreal Silver Shampoo (this was so harsh and horrible I decided to throw it out...)
    - Gazette of Sweden XL silver conditioner (also horrible, smelled bad and did nothing to my hair, threw it out)
    - Avalon Organics Biotin B-Complex Therapy shampoo
    - Nature's Gate Aloe Vera conditioner
    - Mrs. Potter's Aloe Vera conditioner
    - XZ Tyrni hairspray
    - XZ Tyrni styling spray
    - Herbina Sensitive Uncented hairspray
    - Wella Shockwaves Natural Definition hair gel
2A fine wavy hair. Hates silicones, polyquats and too much oil, loves protein and glycerine.
