Hair flattens when put in ponytail

I always wear my hair parted in a ponytail, instead of pulled back, because whenever I pull my hair back, it completely flattens, which I hate. It doesn't matter how perfectly defined my curls are, if I try pulling my hair back into a ponytail or bun, the hair in the front completely flattens.

See how it flattens out, without a visible curl or wave pattern, when pulled back? Is there a way to stop that flattening so that the curls/waves are visible even when pulled back, such as this girl's: /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shefinds.com%2Ffiles%2F2013%2F08%2FHigh-Ponytail-300x264.jpg" class="Popup

Or does the flattening just have to do with curl pattern, and isn't something that can be altered?

    Don't pull it so tight, you are stretching out the curls. Yes weak waves are more at risk of stretching out than a strong curl pattern. I would imagine how much hair you have (thick/ thin density) also plays a role.

    That first set of images is clearly smoothed and tightened far more than the last. Don't comb or finger comb, just loosely grasp the root with your head upside down if you want a high pony or bun. If I want the canopy to fall more one side than the other I don't part, just tip my head right before grasping the root. I tend to have the top fall the opposite way to my natural part so I get more volume and looseness.

    Spin Pins make loose looking yet secure buns, Invisibobble for ponytails (there are US versions) or bungee. Use a tail comb to pouf the top or try pushing forward and U pinning.

    You can also twist front sections with your natural curl pattern to better hold onto the curl and give a little lift. There is a book called 'Strictly Curls' which shows up dos.

    Hmmm...what you said about stretching out the curls really has me thinking. The first year I was natural, I was only a preteen, and my mother did my hair for that entire first year. The only hairstyle she knew how to do was a ponytail, as she had only just recently gone natural, as well.

    For the whole year she did my hair in a parted, slicked down ponytail. And when I say slicked, I definitely mean slicked. Her hair strands are fine, and when she smooths her hair into a ponytail, it easily looks silky and shiny with definable waves. My hair is much thicker and has a high sheen/low shine, and is not silky at all. So in order for her to get my ponytail to look as wavy and slicked as hers did, she had to use more gel and do a lot more brushing. Which resulted in my hair feeling moderately hard and being stuck to my head.

    To get to the point, you have me wondering if the constant brushing and slicking my hair down over-stretched my curls to the point of no return. My hair has always had wavier S-curls in the front, with the back containing the stronger, much tighter s-curls in the back. My hair is thick all over, though, which is why it really was not meant to be slicked down in such a way :/

    Oh, well, my mother was just trying to do her best despite her limited knowledge of curly hair. I guess I'll just have to stick to wearing my hair with a part, then, eh?

    I have the same issue. I think it definitely has to do with the curl type. I have loose curls which can look really curly but they can be brushed out. I use ponytails all the time (it's my go to hairstyle) and if I brush the front it will go flat while the rest stays curly. I have wondered if using this hairstyle (pretty much all my life) has weakened my curls at the root since my hair tends to get curlier right after the point where my ponytail usually lands. {hope this made sense lol}

    I completely understand what you mean, longlivecurls! The 3B curls on my head stretch out easily, all I have to do is wear my hair in a ponytail after doing a twist-out, and after a couple days, it looks like I've blowdried them. But if I wear my hair out, the 3B parts are way bouncier and more defined than the rest of my hair is.

    Since the front and top of my head is mainly 3B, that's probably why those parts of my hair flattens when pulled back. The curl pattern is too weak to be visible when pulled taut. I don't know why I didn't think of that! :dontknow:

    I have the same problem. Unfortunately my hair has little to no root curl and when I pull it back it smooths right out. I don't pull it tight though people tell me it looks tight as it's so straight looking compared with my ponytail. My hair has thinned at the top in recent years which hasn't helped matters either.
    I might try doing what firefox suggested and grabbing my hair while upside down, though I suspect I'll end up with a ton of frizz!
