Should I trust her for my mini chop?

kassidykassidy Registered Users Posts: 26
I just went to this salon in the Bronx that was recommended to me just to talk to the stylist and feel her out but I'm a little scared. I went in and asked her what she thinks about my hair and told her about the chemical damage I have from relaxers and keratin. I haven't done them in over a year and she said she can see the damage but I have so much hair then I would have to do a keratin in order to control it when I cut it short. I said I didn't want to do one but she said that this is a different type of keratin that just smooths the hair and not straighten it. All in all I said I'll think about it but how much would it be, she replied that because my hair is so thick it would be 300 with the cut and style. What do you guys think, should I trust her? Because of my extremely thick hair I haven't been able to find the right person, especially at home in florida. Please help me!!!

Is she cutting curly or straight? Is that what you want? Do you trust her to use the right level of heat and avoid damage if cutting straight?

You are the customer, if you only want a cut only have a cut. Nobody 'needs' a damaging chemical service, people had beautiful thick natural hair before they were invented.

Plenty of celebrities have extensions/ weaves to get unnaturally thick hair, IMO it 'needs' enhancing and defining not controlling.

I dont know if shes going to cut it dry i sort of went in and was rushing out when she said $300 dollar keratin. I am very scared and dont know if i should trust her of keep looking. I just really need it cut and its so unmanageable. she also mentioned deep conditioner but idk if i should do that.

If you just want a cut tell her to cut it and don't allow her to do anything else.

With hairdressers/ hairstylists you haven't used before and you don't know you mustn't be vague.

I suggest you go back when you are less rushed and ask the questions:
    1. How much to cut my damaged ends off?
    2. Do you cut wet or dry?
    3. Do you straighten curly hair before you cut it?

If she still insists on chemical straightening or a "treatment" go elsewhere.

if she is in the bronx it sounds like you could easily get into nyc where there are great curly stylists. are in the nyc area?
i think the word 'keratin' is misleading, making people think it is protein/good for your hair/natural....... blah, blah, blah.
if you stopped relaxing your hair a year ago, it sounds like you want it natural. i say, keep looking. this is a woman who is not comfortable with natural hair, she wants to 'tame' it.

yes that's what it sounds like to me too. and many people tell me that too because its just so thick and unruly and i think thats partially because i dont have a set curly gurl routine. I am so lost in this world! I would rather go to someone in the Bronx, Brooklyn area because a glamour NYC cut is not in the budget right now :(

if you were going to pay $300 for cut and treatment, you can get a great cut for much less than that. she was not inexpensive.
and, there should be good curly stylists in brooklyn/bronx. did you check the salon reviews here?

You may have thick hair but I doubt it's "unruly".

You just haven't worked out how to deal with your hair due to the ends being damaged.

People especially those in the hair profession who describe naturally curly, coily and kinky hair as "unruly" tend not to know how to cut and style it.

here's a thought if money is a concern -- i know devachan has junior stylists who are cheaper than senior stylists -- find out how much they charge for a jr stylist.

i have looked at the salon viewer but there are just so many! I have gotten a deva cut one time but i didn't like it. She put a lot of gel, and then diffused it which i came out with a puff ball because my hair hates blowdryers. I am going to keep looking in NY before I leave, if not i will look for one in florida. quick question, can i go to someone who isnt deva curl or ouidad certified. I was looking into ouidad but its 100 for cut and treatment but idk if its worth the money
  • rbbrbb Registered Users Posts: 4,358 Curl Connoisseur
absolutely you can go to any curly stylist even if not deva or ouidad certified. and, some deva or ouidad 'certified' stylists are not good. you may have run into one. it's only a one day 'training,' i don't even think deva calls it that.

and, you should not judge a cut by the styling --many stylists just can't style our hair no matter how well they cut it. just go home, wash your hair and see how it works for you.

look at the thread in this section called, what should i tell my stylist. has lots of good info to look for and ask.

Thanks rbb! I was asking because when i went to get a deva cut she was trying to shove those products down my throat! I found some salons in FL, one that has bumble and bumble products and most of the girls who work there have curly hair. is bumble and bumble cg?
  • rbbrbb Registered Users Posts: 4,358 Curl Connoisseur
i'n not familiar with bumble & bumble products, but my guess is they are not cg. look at the ingredients. you can always bring your own products, or do a sulfate shampoo when you get home.

Do not let that woman touch your hair. Its a bad sign when someone is trying to push something you don't want off on you.

I would definitely not trust the stylist who wanted to do a keratin treatment.

I agree with rbb about going into Manhattan. I had a fantastic cut by Carlos Flores at Mario Diab last week (which cost $140). In the past, I've had my hair cut by a junior stylist at Devachan for $70, and was extremely happy with the cut. I wasn't as happy with her using almost every product Deva sells on my hair at one time, and realized afterward, from looking at a picture taken there that I must have been starting an allergic reaction by the time she was done, as I was beet red. This time I was looking for something which was a bigger departure from what I had, and Carlos gave me an incredible cut. He also has a very light hand with hair products, and only used one styler on me. Also, he dried my hair upright, with an amazing dryer which seemed to be all infra-red heat, and no moving air. He teaches a lot as he's going along, and I think you'd find that helpful.
    Peace,
    Morgan
