Depends how bad the build up is.

For me it takes SEVERAL washes. I had to wash my hair six times over two days to get it out. Ugh.

Use a clarifying shampoo and then deep condition if the build up is that bad. To much washing is bad for the hair in terms of excessive manipulation and hydration fatigue.

Probably, but I suffered no ill effects and I was using a clarifying shampoo. I had to get it out somehow, it was gross. Also, I didn't wash my hair six separate times. I washed it three times in one shower then three times the next day in the shower.
