loving this pre-poo treatment!

So, a long time ago I used to do an olive oil "pre-poo" treatment, and I stopped... I'm not sure why... but I recently started again and what a difference it has made! I know this is kinda old hat for this community but it really kinda blows me away that something as simple as olive oil can make such a difference with my hair. There's several videos on the naturally curly youtube channel showing how to use olive oil as a pre-treatment and I pretty much do it the same way they do, so I won't go into details here.

But I will share how it affects my hair! :) My hair looks shinier and feels soft, yet there's awesome curl definition. My hair is currently fairly long, maybe an inch or two past my shoulders, and as such the bottom third of my hair is typically noticeably drier than the top two thirds. After using the oil, there's no noticeable difference.

So if you haven't tried using olive oil in your hair yet, I think it's definitely worth a shot, especially since it's so cheap compared to commercially made oil treatments!

So glad you liked olive oil so much!

I use coconut oil for my pre-poos and it's amazing. I'd really recommend you give that a go as it's one of the best oils to use on hair and so many curlies love it :D

Yeah at one point I was using coconut milk but never got around to trying coconut oil. I'm sure it probably smells delicious but that's actually part of the reason I stopped the coconut milk is because my husband doesn't like coconuts, at all lol! Maybe one day :) thanks for the suggestion!

Refined coconut oil is typically odourless. Unrefined usually has a slight coconuty smell, but not overpowering. I use unrefined, virgin coconut oil and can't notice the smell at all!

Virgin coconut oil most definitely smells like coconut. Any coconut oil that doesn't smell has been refined and lower quality.

I've tried coconut and argan oil so far. Still want to try olive oil and castor oil. I have a few others lying around I may try as well, or a mixture of some... see which works best. I absolutely love the treatment as well!

Update! I recently had to travel for work and a friend let me try some of her coconut oil. It was Spectrum brand "unrefined virgin organic coconut oil." I love how it starts as a solid and you warm it in your hands to make it liquid, which to me makes it easier to apply. I definitely smelled coconut, and was immediately craving macaroons, lol! I put it on my hair for the flight back since I was planning to wash my hair anyway when I got home. My husband smelled the coconut also, but he said he didn't mind so much that he would ask me not to use it.

My main concern is how to get it out of my hair.... I've heard it causes drain clogs. How do you ladies deal with that? Do you just use drain treatment right after you wash the coconut oil out? Other than that problem I think I like it!

I've never had a problem with my drain clogging. IMO, you'd have to have some pretty bad plumbing to begin with. I also make soap with oils and have never had a problem using those either. Someone who was thinking of buying a soap bar from me told me this as well. It stumped me, because I had never heard of it, nor had the problem ever.

Maybe people with septic tanks or old pipes? I only use it once a week and have had no drainage issues and we have both lol. It definitely does miracles with my hair. I just had my highlights done Wednesday and my hair is already soft, shiny and looks moisturized.

Yeah, honestly it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me either... their explanation was because it solidifies again once it gets to room temperature and it can somehow coat the pipes?? But my thing is, even if that does happen, it'll just melt again the next time someone takes a shower, washes dishes, etc. etc. etc. Glad to know that I'm not the only one scratching my head on that one! :)
