products for shiny gray hair

rbbrbb Posts: 4,205Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
i posted this a few weeks back in another forum, but thought it was appropriate here.

i've been using cj cccc for these past several weeks and it has made my hair very shiny, great curls, even decent 2nd day hair if i chose.
because my hair is dry i use a leave in first, been using mostly cj argan & olive oil as leave in, less than i'd normally use because then i rake in a tiny bit of cj cccc thru bottom of hair, then thru top & sides. (i could just use more cccc and no leave in, but this seems to be working well for now).
after my hair dries i do my usual scrunching in of cj pp.
i really think the coffee oil in cccc is what is making my white hair so shiny.

any other products anyone's had similar results with?

3a, some 2c & 3b, medium texture, porosity normal, low elasticity :-(

rbb, what is the Curl Junkie product you have been using? some products are mentioned on the facebook Going Grey site I am a member of, but I did not even bother to ask if any are sulfate free, or are cleansing conditioners...you know, that is a curly thing...

what specific type of product do you mean? there aren't any that are specifically for gray hair. i just found that the cccc gives my hair extra shine and that gray hair looks great when it shines.
i do add ardell red/gold corrector the to the cj argan & olive oil conditioner to brighten up the white from time to time, but that is a product i add to a regular conditioner.
i am a curl junkie junkie and use most of her products. some on a daily basis, others from time to time.

i just meant any products anyone has found that gives their gray hair lots of shine, inadvertently. like oh, look how this styler, whatever... makes me hair shiny! :-)

There are evidently blue and purple shampoos that allegedly keep the gray from yellowing, etc.

i tried those in the past. they are drying (not cg), i had an allergic reaction to one, and they will leave your hair blue if you use too much.

i find using the ardell red/gold corrector to be the best for me. i can use it in any shampoo or conditioner, so it does not dry my hair out. it does not turn my hair blue. and it's cheap!

Rbb- How many drops do you put in at a time? I purchased this at Sally's over the weekend, but I'm not sure how to use it! Thanks.

i bought the larger size, comes in a tiny bottle, not the envelope packet for the smaller size.
i put about 20 drops per ounce. i do a bunch at a time, then i have it ready to go when i feel it needs it. (i'll grab a bottle of conditioner that has been started so i have room to add drops and shake well.
at first i'd do it on a each time basis and that worked as i experimented with different conditioners. i think there is plenty of room for more or less, see what your hair needs.

there is more info on this in the gray hair journey thread. if you go to that thread and do a further search within that thread, it should come to these posts.

^ ditto rbb. I tried lots of different blue/purple conditioners (I think there's a thread on the over 40 forum with the results of my experiments with them) but they all seemed very drying to my hair. Now, like rbb, I just add red/gold corrector to my favorite conditioners and it works great. I only use it a few times a month, especially if I'm spending time in smokey bars.
As for shine, there just seem to be days that my hair is shiny and other days it isn't. If it's really dull I'll just mist a tiny bit of oil on it and run my hands through it. My hair doesn't like too much oil (except in deep treatments). It makes it stringy.

Can one of you pls explain how a red/gold corrector makes gray hair shiny? what color is this product?
  • jeepcurlygurljeepcurlygurl Posts: 19,678Registered Users, Curl Ambassador Curl Virtuoso
^ It is a blue/purple color (very concentrated) that counteracts the yellow in grey hair. It's purpose is to make hair bright though not necessarily shiny.

Why does gray hair get yellow in the first place?
  • jeepcurlygurljeepcurlygurl Posts: 19,678Registered Users, Curl Ambassador Curl Virtuoso
I don't know the scientific reason but to me it's kind of like your windows getting dirty. Windows/grey hair have little or no color. Smoke, pollution, minerals in the water, dust from the furnace, hair products, etc all add a layer to the surface of your windows/hair.
I spend alot of time in the sun in the summer and it also makes my hair get a yellow tint to it.
And heat from curling irons/flat irons/blow dryers can make grey hair very yellow. I honestly don't know how people deal with that who use heat stylers on their hair every day. My sister ran her new flat iron through a strip of my hair one day just to see if it would straighten my tough hair and it instantly turned it a very dark yellow color. Ick.

    I found this on line:

As we grow old, our hair bulbs lose the capacity to produce melanin that determines the color of our hair. The change in pigmentation that comes with age is really the reason why hair turns from gray to yellow. The melanin granules in our hair break down and the underlying pigment, which is essentially pale yellow, comes out. Having said that, it's also other external factors that are responsible for gray hair turning yellow. Hair starts to appear yellow when direct sunlight or free radicals and air pollutants interact with the natural chemicals in them. Water in particular also can be one of the main reasons. If the water you wash your hair with is hard or rich in iron, the chemicals leave a deposit on the shaft of the hair. So, using distilled water to wash hair always helps. Then, of course, active or passive smoking, medication, hairsprays can also cause gray hair to turn yellow too. At times it's the oxidizing caused by hair iron, curlers or rollers that makes silver hair to look yellow. One's diet also plays a huge role. Food high in sulfur or even medicines with sulfur concentrations can have this effect. In some cases it's B-12 deficiency or thyroid imbalance that make hair to turn yellow.

To prevent hair from turning yellow, one must cover hair with a hat or a scarf when out in the sun. Adding a layer of protection by applying moisturizer in hair when going out also helps. It's also advised to change the shampoo in three to four months so that there is no shampoo build up. Brassy, yellow look can be gotten rid of from the hair by choosing a highlighting shampoo that has a cool base color like blue or violet, specifically shampoos containing vegetable dyes. Apply the shampoo to wet hair, work up lather and let it stand for about 5 minutes. You can also rinse your hair with lime juice regularly to get rid of the yellowness. Mixing baking soda with shampoo and rubbing it on hair for a couple of minutes and rinsing it off will get rid of the deposits. Follow this just once a week so that the hair doesn't get dry. Another way is rinsing hair with 1 tablespoon Vinegar added to 1 cup filtered water. Also including eggs, soybean, peanut, walnut, black sesame, proteins prevents the yellowing of gray hair.

Oh oh, I have a hairspray addiction; I use the Deva hairspray. Will have to be diligent in combatting the yellow, as I get more gray

Huh - I have never heard about lime juice helping to combat hair turning yellow. Interesting.

What I use for shine is not natural or CG, but right now I am liking Rita Hazan Shine Gloss in Clear. I use it maybe every 8 weeks, but will probably start going to 4-6 weeks. On my 3b curls, my hair texture is smoother, the curl is slightly looser, and it definitely has a healthier shine.

Another product I have waiting in the wings unused is Oscar Blandi At Home Salon Glaze. From their promo blah-blahs on various sites, this one had me at "This clear glaze can be even dropped into your favorite conditioner for a daily dose of shine." Which I haven't done yet, since I wanted to use up the Rita Hazan first, but now I may try this one sooner.
