Why call it a skunk stripe?

chupiechupie Registered Users Posts: 5,280 Curl Connoisseur
I have decided it is much more like a white tigress stripe emerging.

I hear you. I am 6 weeks into a grow out and it looks terrible. Makes me look bald. I am retired so I am home all day and with less to think about and I am obsessing.

Poo: Have to admit I have recently become a Wen convert. Love it. I have always had problems with my hair "hanging" right, curling uniformly and destorting the perimeter line. Wen makes it hang evenly.

MEOW!! well I am about 3 months into the process and it is not a stripe, exactly; because everywhere under my hair is about 2 inches of silver. But, it is most visible at the top, and around my face if I pull it back. I think it is more a stripe for straight haired gals.

Myrna, my hair is getting so thin you can already see my gray/white hair all over even @ 6 week growth. The thinness is one, of several, reasons I decided to grow out the gray.

I read one time where a woman was talking about her transition, and she called it a racing stripe. I like that a lot better than calling a skunk stripe!

Me too. It seems common for women to lose hair when they get older and this is my biggest fear, I think. I can handle wrinkles and the like if I still like my hair. Hopefully all the learning we've done about our hair and how to treat it will help us keep our hair.

But I mean during the transition? Is it true you get bald looking? I've seen some references to this.

chubbie, dont let me influence you if you are debating growing out your gray. I am 67 and my hair is getting thinner because of that. I believe the no color roots make it worse but I don't think women look bald during gray grow out when they don't have thin hair.

Ladies, Ladies! I went through this and am still to a point. When you first start letting your roots go gray, there is a very narrow margin of silver against your dyed hair. So the contrast looks great. And, more of your scalp (mine too!) seems visible because a pink scalp is more visible through silver hair, as opposed to whatever color dyed hair we have. But, as the amount of silver increases, I believe, that "bald thing" is much less visible. Also, if you have curls, it is a huge advantage over straight hair. I try to get volume at the top of my hair to "hide" it but the more gray I have, the less I will be able to. Of course, the more gray I have, the less I think I will notice the pink scalp thing. :toothy7::toothy7:

Yeah, I don't have root curl. Just 2a/occasionally b wave from ears down. Starting to freak out a little. Trying not to.

Chupie, I've seen your pictures and watched some of your videos, and I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Give it some time and cross that bridge IF you come to it.

I looked tonight and its starting to lighten right at the front. The last dye I did was semi permanent. I am hoping that makes the demarcation line softer. Hey, I should maybe make a couple of these: Ravelry: femininebydesign's wavelet hair tie

Chupie has videos? someone, like YOU, Chupie, pls send me the link(s).

I put up a post on the going gray website about the concerns expressed here about thinning hair. So far all the comments say 1. the health of their hair improved greatly when they stopped dyeing 2. One woman thought she experienced some thinning due to menopause but it was temporary. The opinions are that going gray was the best thing they ever did for their hair. I will keep all posted as to comments about the concern.

There are just a few. I'm thinking about doing one discussion the gray decision. I also need to do one with the AG Mousse Gel, which I quite like.

Because, for the most part, the society in this country has a very negative attitude toward women as they age.

When men age, they are "distinguished", women are "handsome"...smh!

I don't become a man as I get older, I become a more sensuous woman...like fine wine, I get better as the years go by! "boom"...LOL!

My cutie barista at Starbucks looked at me and started pointing to his forehead. He said 'what do you call that? I want that!' I thought I had a fancy barrette in my hair or something. It was my grey 'tiger stripe.' He said he was jealous. Oh, yeah!
