What products do you use for your overly porous hair during the winter? And what is your winter regimen?

This winter, my main products are coconut oil, Elucence Repair Treatment, Shima Hair Repair, Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner, SS Decadent Treatment, and My DNA Leave-in.

Other conditioners and oils are also included for variety. I've also gone back to using a product containing henna when I was transitioning.

My regimen is pre-poo/PT on unwashed hair, steaming w/DC, leave-in, and sometimes using a soft hold curl definer. My hair style is a curly bun. Simply, but no breakage during the winter for two consecutive years (only shed hair).

I really enjoy the TN coconut and jojoba line as my leave in. I am starting pretty basic. I would love to hear what others say.

Less hydrolysed protein but more natural oils (especially coconut but also a little palm and avocado). Not sticking to one regime but mixing it up.

Cantu shea butter leave in and coconut oil. I like raw shea butter to seal as well but it gets hard in the winter so i save that for the summer.

I use CJ pattern pusha gel, and a tiny little bit of cocounut oil (I can't use much because my hair get weighted down).

RO en LI is different every time. But I have CJ beauticurls (has glycerin in it, so watch the dews if you use it as LI), CJ repair me (love it as a leave-in!) and CJ smoothing daily hair conditioner and Oyin hair dew.

Now I have been trying to primarily focus on what my hair needs. Thus, I am becoming more vigilant of my protein, panthenol, coconut oil, 18-MEA, ceramide needs since I am high porosity. A user (Firefox, hope it's ok I mentioned your name), was kind enough to help me find a conditioner that contains ceramides because honestly, I wasn't incorporating them in my hair care even though it's recommended. It was due to me not knowing what they honestly were. The loreal conditioner that contains ceramides has amodimethicone. Still going to use it.

KCCC is definitely a staple for me because it works in all dews for me. I also really love KCCC because it is great when layering with other gels.

I also added Giovanni Direct Leave in with the loreal because it contains panthenol (I believe 4th ingredient). Hopefully these more conscious changes will be helping my hair.

I'm now experimenting with 18-MEA (a lipid/ fat tho the product ingredient is a quat) having relaxed my rigid silicone free rule. Unhappy with the results, not sure if it is the glycerin in the two products I have or L'Oreal's emollient base that doesn't suit (my hair prefers fatty alcohols) or indeed both.

Need to refresh my lengths - colour is rich in fatty alcohols - so hopefully I can reset and start afresh.

Going to purchase a Redken and/ or Ouidad intensive conditioner containing 18-MEA next.

I keep hearing panthenol and ceramides are good for you but I don't really get how to incorporate them into my hair routine. If they are in a hair product are they just listed as panthenol and ceramides?

Mustangbunny: panthenol is listed as panthenol or provitamin B5.

Ceramides are listed as ceramides or 2-oleamido-1,3-octadecanediol in L'Oreal products. The comma is part of the loooong chemical name it is not two ingredients.

I started a master list of ceramide and/ or 18-MEA products over on the Long Hair Community 'Conventional Products' board. The list is annotated with silicones, glycerin and protein for those who want to avoid, and panthenol if included.

I bought that same L'oreal conditioner yesterday but I'm nervous to use it! I went looking for Giovanni Direct Leave In and I haven't found it yet but I'm definitely considering trying it out. I love my GSAS so I'd love to try other Giovanni conditioners.

Don't be nervous! I have used it twice now. It has great slip as a detangler and I like it as a leave in so far. I wanna say i have noticed my hair retaining shine but is that bc of the amodomethicone?

I don't know. If a cone is water soluble doesn't that mean it should wash out when we rinse the conditioner out? My hair does look shinier after using it this morning, though.

This article I found states that water soluble cones are more easily removed by co-washing, rinsing, or using a mild shampoo (cocamidopropyl betaine). This is all in comparison to nomn-water soluble silicones.

I have been using Loreal Advance Hair Care conditioner for about a month and I do like it. The amodimethicone does not worry me. What does concern me is the dimethicone in the Loreal shampoo I'm using...

Amodimethicone is not water soluble, it is amine functionalised and resists building up.

I alternate between a low poo - lately it's been YTCucs - and a Cowash - either As I Am or Eden. KCKT, KCCC, and SM Elixir. For days I straighten I put some Aveda Smooth Infusion on over everything.
