Glycerin build up - what has worked for you?

I've found a routine that works ok for me in the very low dew points. However, I am getting glycerin build up. It is mild enough that I am not going to change everything - I just want to clarify once every couple of weeks. Once the weather warms up, I'll be fine - my summer routine was wonderful.

Anyway - I want to remove this build up, but don't want to use anything more harsh than necessary to do it. The low-poos I have onhand don't seem to do the trick. I thought about Suave Clarifying - I've used that in the past but it is incredibly drying on my scalp.

Thanks

i wasn't aware that glycerin builds up. are you sure that is what it is? are there polyquats in your products? i can't use lots of glycerin in winter, but it does not build up. wash out with a co wash.
(haha -- i have a new computer and was trying to type co wash as one word, but it kept 'correcting' it and breaking it up as 'cow ash'!! LOL)

I never heard of glycerin building up, it's highly water soluble (a potent humectant) and not substantive (does not bond to or penetrate hair) AFAIK.

If you have build up its more likely waxes (including cetyl esters), hydrolysed protein, polyquats, butters or minerals from your water.

I, too, was going to question glycerin building up. I imagine that anything could build up--but that's one I've never heard.

Usually, the problems with glycerin have to do with it being a humectant--either bringing water into your hair from humidity (high dewpoint) or sucking water out of your hair because the dewpoint is low.

The other issue is that glycerin can make hair color fade more quickly. Not sure of the science behind that.

Neutrogena Anti-Residue shampoo is a good clarifying shampoo, if you'd like to try something else. That's what I use and it takes everything off and doesn't dry me out. Be sure to follow with a good conditioner left on for a bit

I wouldn't blame glycerin for the buildup, but perhaps if you have low dews it could be causing a separate problem for you. I got rid of glycerin altogether in the winter months.

You're on the right track, definitely helps to clarify on a regular basis. I only reach for my sulfate when I need to get rid of polyquats. Otherwise I stick to my YTCucs low poo and it works wonders.

Thanks everyone! When sought advice about switching up my routine in the fall, and I must have confused some things. I remember people saying that glycerin was problematic for some in the winter, so I had in the back of my mind that it might be trouble for me. So, when I started having build up, I immediately thought glycerin.

I'm definitely experiencing build up - so it must be another ingredient I have overlooked. We do have soft water, but maybe it could be softer? I am looking now at ingredients and I think it might be the coconut oil in the Beauticurls - that was giving me trouble when the weather changed (lots of it in my Pumpkin Seed conditioner!) I SWEAR I got products with no coconut oil - that was my whole plan. I must of confused that sample with another. ugh.

Either way I will clarify and try going without it. In the meantime, here are all the products I currently use and their ingredients. Just in case anything else could be trouble.

Are these the products you are currently using or the ones in your siggy, or both?

Your hairspray has a cone in it and I don't believe the low-poo can remove it... so that may be an issue. It also has a drying alcohol very high on the list that could be drying you out.

If you're using the Curl Keeper, I know that has polyquats in it that give some people problems.

I don't believe glycerin can build up as it's highly water soluble, but in very low dews some can experience dryness.

I agree with you and the others about clarifying (and possibly chelating).

Although low in the list of ingredients and in the shampoo, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a polyquat with high build-up potential, according to this article: Science-y Hair Blog: Polyquat or Not?

i did wonder if what you are experiencing is dryness from glycerin? glycerin will draw moisture to itself, where it can get it. in high dews it takes in moisture from the air, mid dews it seems to be happy as is, in low dews it draws moisture out of our hair. however, the cj products you listed do not have glycerin.

Ingredients that can build up: hydrolysed protein in shampoo and Repair Me, cetyl esters (wax) and various butters in the two Curl Junkie products.

Coconut oil should not build up, it's easily shifted with co-washing perhaps because the lauric acid molecules are so small. I don't see loads in anything, the first five ingredients are the bulk of the product.

Many people need to use fewer humectants in winter: glycerin, honey, propylene glycol, aloe if high on ingredients, hydrolysed protein. If overused these can make hair dry which some confuse for build up.

Thanks everyone - I really wish ingredients were easier to identify.

That cone in my hairspray is one I didn't notice - I've been using that for months and months - I only use a small amount, and not every day - usually just day 2 or 3 when I've got things pulled back. Will ditch it. I swear it was on the CG approved list at one time.. maybe they changed ingredients?

And the polyquat in the shampoo.. ugh. Why do they have to do that? lol. It is shampoo. My boys all use that and so far I'm not noticing any problems with buildup.

The products in my siggy was what i used all summer and I had amazing hair. Once the weather switched, my hair was disgusting. Some of that was from the large amounts of coconut oil in the conditioner - which is solid at room temperature - so it was sitting heavy on my hair instead of being absorbed more. I had better results using very hot water to really rinse my hair well before washing, and warm up the conditioner In my hands before putting it on warm hair. It was better, but not great.

I'll get rid of the shampoo and spray. I'll clarify and see how it goes from there. I might need some help looking a little closer at my other low poos.

I'm not sure how to confuse dry hair with build up. To me, my hair feels heavy and coated. Looks greasy, dull. I notice it more the closer it is to my scalp - but it isn't the same as just regular oily scalp - if that makes any sense at all.

I think I need to move to a place with higher dew points year round! ;)

Thanks everyone for the help. I'll clarify and go down to one conditioner to narrow the pool of potential culprits!

The Burt's Bees poo could be the culprit. I'm not sure it's technically a lowpoo (and I'm on a tablet, so looking all the ingredients up is a PITA), but if it is, it's only technically in that category. They load up the non-sulfate detergents so heavily that they're just as harsh and drying.

Most of your products have behentrimonium methosulfate right at the top. In my experience, that stuff builds up easily and apparently can only be removed with certain surfactants (e.g. coco betaine - traditional sulfates couldn't remove the build up from BTMS for me).

Buildup for me can come in frizz and/or dryness. If I get really frizzy when wet, I know I have buildup. Or my hair just feels gross, but not always. If I scratch my scalp and there's stuff under my fingernails, that's a sure sign as well. When I experience just plain dryness, my hair gets that 'poofy' look. Like if you blow dry your hair without anything in it.

Hopefully this can help you distinguish.

So - this must not be problematic for everyone.. so many people rave about these products. I am wondering if it is the problem for me. These conditioners were fantastic the first couple times I used them. Excellent slip, soft glossy hair for days. Now my hair is filmy and gross by the end of day 2.

I used Suave clarifying and Beauticurls Argan & Olive oil only on Jan 1st. We went to a waterpark that day so I left a lot of conditioner on. I repeated this on the 2nd. Had day 2 hair on the 3rd (nasty by the end of the day). So the suave either did not remove whatever was building up, or I am nasty greasy from stripping the oils from my scalp. We've been stuck inside this weekend so I haven't washed my hair - the "ignore it and it will go away" trick I'll see if I have anything with coco betaine. Thanks!

Another thought is build up from the combination of shampoo (anionic) and conditioner (cationic) molecules. This can be an issue for those who condition-wash-condition or pre-poo with an intensive conditioner.

If the problem is the BTMS, I didn't have any problems all summer - using the Repair Me like a crazy person. But now adding the other conditioners, could that have put me over the edge? Or is it likely that it is something else. If it is something else, shouldn't the Suave have gotten rid of it?

Another thought is build up from the combination of shampoo (anionic) and conditioner (cationic) molecules. This can be an issue for those who condition-wash-condition or pre-poo with an intensive conditioner.

I don't pre-poo but am interested in more info on this. Gosh.. it is so overwhelming! The first time I tried CG was 7-8 years ago. It was during the winter and I gave in quickly.. I am remembering why! Not this time - just need to get my hair feeling clean again. That is all I ask! ;)

Looking at all of my conditioners - i have NOTHING here without BTMS. So I need to get a good low poo that will remove it and will ideally be gentle enough for regular use. And I need at least one conditioner without anything that builds up. UGH!

I loved Darcy's Pumpkin in the summer - BTMS is the second ingredient. I'm so confused.

Alkaline soaps (saponified oils) can leave a scummy residue, not good for clarifying. The glucosides tend to be gentle, again not good for clarifying.

I'd use one of the products rich in sulphate surfactants and a betaine, the Yes To's.

Olefin sulfonates are harsh and might well work, just slightly wary of the polyquat.

Thank you! Very helpful info! -my summer routine in the siggy was wonderful. I am wondering if using the TMW shampoo was stripping the BTMS regularly so I didn't get the build up. I also didn't notice any problems with the pq7. Something in that combo caused me problems though when the weather changed.

If I can figure out how to keep my hair clean, and my scalp moisturized until the weather warms up, i'll take it!

It's not clear what Suave Clarifying product you're using. If it's the shampoo, you should know that it contains:

Water, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Ammonium Chloride, PEG 5 Cocamide, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Fragrance, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Citric Acid, PEG/PPG-20/15 Dimethicone, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate), Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, FD&C Blue 1CI 42090, D&C Red 33CI 17200

Some people doing modified CG use products with water-soluble cones. I do not, because I find them drying, and I prefer to be able to refresh my curl and get multi-day hair. Polyquaterniums are avoided by others, although they're technically CG. (I routinely get multi-day hair, but other people find them occlusive, which would cause dryness.)
    Peace,

I have suave daily clarifying - these are the ingredients on my bottle.

Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocomide Mea, Ammonium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Tetrasodium Edta, Dmdm Hydantoin, Citric Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate [Vitamin E Acetate], Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Ppg-9, Blue 1 (Ci 42090), Red 33 (Ci 17200).

At this point I want to avoid polyquats too. Everything - anything that might cause build up.

I have used TMW shampoo and DB pumpkin Seed condish twice. Much much better. IF it was BTMS build up, the TMW's surfactants are taking care of it.

Stil far from ideal, but ok. Hair is clean and glossy. I got day 3 with a little dry shampoo. If day 4 would have been a weekend I would have gone for it, too. Curl pattern is a bit wonky, and I'm not getting any clumping without any other product, but I can pull it back in a way that forgives some of that.

Im going to find a conditioner without btms and see if that does the trick. Thanks for all the help!

This! Burts Bees shampoos just make my hair sit up and snarl! Doesn't matter how 'natural' they are supposed to be, my hair absolutely hates Burts Bees!
