Use Up Your Stash in 2014 Challenge!!!

kaykrekaykre Posts: 314Registered Users Curl Neophyte
Would anyone be interested in participating in a “Use Up Your Stash” project with me? :flower:

I’ve been doing some thinking and my PJ-ism is out of control. I did some googling and LHC has done similar stash kills. I took some inspiration from theirs and came up with some rules and guidelines.

Maybe we could do it as a 2014 group challenge type thing (sort of like the 2014 one inch per month growth challenge)? I think if everyone is supporting each other people would be more likely to stick to it and achieve their goals.

If you want to do it, post and I’ll edit this first post and add your name to a list. That way it will be easy to quickly glance and see who’s participating.

Okay… So without further ado, here are the rules and guidelines. I’ve come up with some of these but many of them are from the LHC challenge I mentioned above. Of course, modify them to fit your goals and needs. I think we should aim for either monthly or quarterly goals (up to you which you choose). :)

Guidelines/How To
  1. Join by posting and letting me know you want to participate. I’ll add your name to the list in this initial post. Please mention what you wish to achieve by doing this challenge.
  2. Post your stash by category. I’ve listed product categories below. You can use these or come up with your own. If you have multiples of a product I suggest listing it multiple times so it’s easier to cross off once you’ve used it. Include pictures if you like!
  3. For each product category, pick staples. I suggest 1-2 per category but it’s up to you. These staple products will NOT count for products used up, as new products (if you repurchase), etc. Indicate in your stash list which products are staples. You can change your staples if needed.
  4. You’re allowed 1 new purchase per month (excluding staples).
  5. No excessive backups (even of staples). Aim for no more than one or two backups of any one product.
  6. Using up, swapping, selling, and throwing out are all acceptable means of stash killing. Once you get rid of a product (by any of these means), strikethrough it on your list.
  7. Decide whether you want to set monthly or quarterly goals. Mention what you’d like to stash kill in that period of time and check in after.
  8. Mention the your total count of products at the start of the challenge, your current count, and how many you’ve "killed" when you update.

Okay… I'll start. Here goes. I have a lot.

Firstly, I indicated staples by making them red. As you can see, I don't have staples for every category yet. I indicated used up/killed items by making them purple and putting an 'X' before the name. If anyone knows how to strikethrough on here please let me know!

I have a few goals for the month of January (meaning I want to accomplish them by the end of January).

First, I want to get rid of the things I don’t use and don’t like. I’m donating them. I’ve already marked them off because they’re in a box and ready to be donated tomorrow. Some I will sell. These will also be marked off but if they don’t sell by the end of January I will be donating them.

Also, I would like to use up several things. I’ve noted the things I aim to use up with asterisks (***) in front of the name and I made them green.

Count me in I'd much rather be spending money on other stuff. Its not healthy by any means lol.
I want to narrow down my stash so I have 1 of each of these:
    1. Shampoo
    2. Conditioner
    3. Leave in
    4. Deep Treatment/Mask
    5. Sealer
    6. Styling Gel/milk/or cream (any which I may feel appropriate for my hair for when I wish to style it. I prefer just conditioner only styling at the moment)

    The Stash:

    Shampoos/Co-washes:

    Curl Junkie daily fix

    Shea Moisture cleansing Coconut+Hibiscus Co-wash

    Conditioner:

    Tresemme Naturals

    Curl Junkie Beauticurls Argan+Olive Oil

    Suave Ocean conditioner

    Treatments/Masks:

    Curl Junkie Curl Rehab

    Curl Junkie Repair Me

    Stylers:

    Shea Moisture Yucca Baobab Milk

    Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

    Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha

    Sealers:

    Shea Moisture Elixir

    Jane Carter Nourish and Shine

    Staples:

    Shea Moisture shampoo

    Shea Moisture Conditioner

    Shea Moisture Mask

    Shea Moisture Smoothie

    Kinky Curly Curling Custard

    Kinky Curly Leave In

    Coconut Oil

A problem I have is that most of my products are the kind where a little goes a long way. Not to mention I hardly use anything in my hair at all anymore. I basically just wash my hair and leave conditioner in. At most I will seal.
This is because I find it convenient as I can go longer without worrying about it. No awkwardly shaped curls or restyling ever needed. In other words what the hell should I do with all my product lol?

I won't be participating because I don't have a lot of stash left to kill- I took care of that over the last year and a half. But I wanted to let everyone know that I completely understand, since I'm definitely a recovering product junkie. At one point I had about 120 different hair products in my bathroom (the breakdown was staggering- I believe I had almost 30 different conditioners) I'm down to about 35-40, which is split between home and my locker at the gym. Since I like to rotate products my stash probably won't get too much smaller- I've got less than 10 products that I won't be repurchasing. But I wanted to wish everyone luck, make people feel better about the size of their product stashes, and show that it really can be done :)

@Corrina It's nice to hear others have successfully done this! I don't think I'll ever have a truly small stash... I like variety and different products based on my hair's needs. However, I'd like to have it down to just a handful... Maybe 2-3 shampoos,4-5 conditioners, a DT, a PT, a scalp oil, and maybe 7-8 stylers.

    @GlamourCurls I believe the a-cone is CG! TY! :)

@bringingcurliesback? I know, right! Lol.. I'm thinking it can be part of my "one product a month allowance"

@bringingcurliesback- I sing in two church choirs so this time of year is awful for me. That combined with the excessive spam...

@kaykre- I've also always been a huge product junkie. I ultimately decided that my permanent stash would would include 4-5 cleansers (one straight co-wash conditioner, one cleansing conditioner, one low-poo and my gentle sulfate shampoo, plus wiggle room to try something new), 4-5 conditioners, 1-2 mousses (I pretty much always style with mousse on Sundays because I need my hair to dry quickly), 1-2 LI products, 1-2 PT and DT products, and 10-12 styling products to allow for rotation (I typically use Scott Musgrave's MAP technique, so I use two different styling products at a time). I also ended up deciding to keep two styling products specifically for when I visit my brother's family because they have a water softener. Jessicurl products are normally only blah to average for my hair, but the heavy dose of mag sulfate is fantastic to help counter the soft water.

So I still end up with a pretty large stash, but it's no longer a random assortment of stuff- it's a specifically maintained collection of products that work together, which I think is really what we're all looking for.

I also wanted to share some of what helped me with my stash killing this year. The biggest "problem" that I have is that my hair is very agreeable. I can use humectants in almost any climate, my hair appears to be resistant to getting over-proteined, and most products will give me at least average looking hair. There are very few products that my hair has ever really disliked, which made it difficult at first to figure out what was worth keeping and what wasn't.
When my stash was at its absolute worst (around 120 products), I did a huge giveaway of cheaper products. I had a friend with wavy hair and I unloaded a huge amount of drugstore products on her. Basically, if it was less than about $5, even if I wasn't sure if I wanted to re-purchase, it went out the door. The next thing I focused on were the containers closest to being empty. And if I added a product to my immediate kill list, I used that product every time I washed and styled my hair, unless I was going somewhere where I really wanted my hair to look amazing. I only marked 1-2 products on my immediate kill list at a time so that I could still experiment with different combinations. I also tried using products in different ways, which helped a lot. For example, CIAB didn't wow me as a regular styling product, but I ended up loving it as a second day smoothing product. This gave me the chance to really decide if something was worth keeping or not. At the same time, I took note of what products I grabbed when I wanted those awesome hair days, because that helped me narrow down my real true favorites. I basically worked backwards from the products I could use up most quickly to the ones that were almost full so that I had some immediate results and could get some positive momentum. As I got closer to the end, I had another opportunity to give away some products, this time to one of my best friends. In the second batch I included all price levels (it was my best friend, and she was going through a financial rough patch). I focused on products that I wasn't thrilled with that were still more than half full because I was dreading how long it would take me to use stuff up.
At the same time, I forced myself to be much more selective about what I purchased. I'm still a product junkie, but I started to really look more at ingredients, so very few of the products I purchased during this time gave me only blah to average results (there were a few that slipped through, hence the ten products or so that I need to use up). For example, my hair cannot get enough protein, so I told myself that I would no longer buy anything that didn't have protein (the only exceptions are products that already reached HG status like Curl Keeper). This let me still experiment and try new products, but limited how crazy I could go. I also limited purchases based on how stash killing was going. For example, there's a mousse that I want to try, but I won't let myself try it until I use up one of the mousses I currently have.

@Corrina777 Those are some seriously awesome tips... I will be using them! I think today I will go through and get rid of all the under $5-10 stuff that I don't love. I have someone who'd love them so it should work out well. I also am doing something similar to an "immediately kill list". I made a list of products that I want to use up by the end of January (I think they're all conditioners though lol).
2A/B. Mix of fine, medium, and coarse (mostly medium). Dense. Mix of normal and high porosity.
    Dry climate.

I want to be involved in this, I really do. I am only two weeks into this and I can't figure out what my hair likes yet, so I'm still questing. However, I may jump in when I find a few keepers to try and control my "collection" of goodies. Thanks to whoever started this thread!!
2b/2c wavy/whirley hair, usually out of control.
    High porosity, fine texture.
Just started this journey to natural curly territory, so I have no "regular" routine yet.
