CurlTalk

Spam!

OH my I've never been on a forum so plagued with spam! I can't even find valid topics, and honestly I'm afraid to visit the site sometimes in case I click on something that may not be legit. :(

I suggest we all click on the report spam icon for these threads. I wish this site had a report user button as well. Then we'd be able to pin point particular accounts and not have to click on every thread.

I have been trying, but there are 11 pages of it and you have to wait 60 between each report. 5 more show up in the time it takes to report one.

I belong to other online forums that have NO spam, nothing. I don't understand what the issue is with this one. I know the mods are all volunteers, so they shouldn't take the heat. The site itself should have anti-spam something built into it.

Ok. I think I've got it all. I had to go back 6 pages to do it. I've been banning users but they just keep signing up under the same name and the next numeral.

I've deleted over 200 messages, I think. But they just keep coming. Someone higher up will have to ban the IP to stop it.

If I accidentally deleted anyone's REAL thread, let me know.

Thanks so much! Hope I didn't sound snotty when I brought it up :( I love coming here and reading tips, and when I saw all the spam I was worried and concerned. Thanks again!

Thanks for reporting. It has been absolutely loony today. Shouldn't these spammers be out shopping or something?:reindeer:

And apparently deleted one of my posts...bug surprise there.

I asked if anyone had their post accidentally deleted to let me know. I deleted 6 pages of spam plus other various posts from other threads - I figured it was a possibility.

So is will go back through and try to find the one of yours I deleted. I was home alone with my kids while trying to accomplish this mass deletion and banning people responsible, so I apologize if I inadvertently deleted one of yours in the process.

    ETA:

Apparently I can no longer do that. I sincerely apologize for accidentally deleting your thread. I really tried not to let that happen, but clearly I failed. If it was a fairly new thread, I suggest restarting it. Your other option is to report it to a higher up and maybe they have the power to retrieve it.

Again, my apologies. I had over 200 messages to delete one at a time, and users to ban that kept signing back up.

Why are new users allowed to post links if you have a known spammer problem?

Banning IPs won't help as in some countries internet users particularly home users have dynamic IPs. A lot of your spam messages are about UK things were most home users have dynamic IPs.

This means if you ban the IP you risk banning legit regular users.

The spammer will just reboot their router until they get another IP assigned to them and will start spamming again.

And yes I do work in the IT field and have seen forum owners over many years try different methods to stop spammers. The most effective one is increasing privileges on increased post count.

I am not in IT and this makes sense to me.

    By the way....it's back!

Omg. It's gotten to the point that all the new posts I see now are just spam! This is beyond infuriating! Why not require people to "prove" they're a human when they register for a username? Like when websites have those weird numbers or words that they require you to type in to prove that ur actually a person and not a spammer
Medium texture, normal porosity, normal elasticity

I don't have an answer for you. I'm just a mod, which means I am a member like you, and I do not work for TextureMedia not do I have really any inside information.

I'm not sure if there's a point in even removing the spam at this point - it just comes back.

We've been told there is a major overhaul coming that is supposed to take care of the issue. That's all I know.
