Went back to my old stylist again after three years

I've been questioning my current hair stylist for quite some time. She seems interested in the Curly Girl method and everything that I tell her, but she does not necessarily seem to respect it. I can bring my own products, but she still seems to stick to things like blow drying my hair (which kills my curls and takes over a month to recover from).

I considered going back to my old stylist who was actually the one who introduced me to silicones and why I should avoid them. Today I just went back and I was lucky to catch her while she was on a break. She was really excited to see me and immediately offered tea. She inquired after what I've been up to these past few years and it was just really nice. I was surprised that she remembered everything. She responded extremely well to the fact that I've been taking good care of my hair and that I pay attention to ingredients and to my hair's specific needs. She actually knew about things like sulphates and protein (this basically never happens in the Netherlands). The salon is hers so she also gets to decide what products are used, and she's experimenting with new brands right now. She gave me a bunch of samples of a brand I've never heard of, but that sound promising: Kitoko. I also got a folder of a brand called No Nothing.

I told her that I've blogged about the things I've learned here and she asked me to send the articles so that she could read it. I'm really glad I went back because it just felt good and I feel that I can trust her. She takes me seriously and respects my decisions. I have an appointment for Friday 27 December and I'm really looking forward to it :)

That sounds great! It sounds like a very positive exchange on both sides, and I hope it works out really well for you. I do hope you'll post pictures of your cut after your appointment.

Sounds like you made the right call going back to her. Why did you change from her three yeears ago?

sdkitty, I changed because I had moved to a different city and I figured it would be more convenient for me to find a stylist there, especially since I have bangs that need to be trimmed regularly.

Mliesa, the salon is called "Glamour Hairstyle" in De Bilt, which is near Utrecht. There are three stylists there and I always go to Deborah. She is not a curly hair stylist and she doesn't do Curlsys or anything and I don't think she really knows about the Curly Girl method, but the fact that she's aware of silicones and sulphates and that she seems so eager to read more is already quite unique here in the Netherlands. In the past, they have done quite a lot of my updos for special occasions, even after their opening hours. I'm really looking forward to going back upcoming Friday!

Thanks Laura, sounds wonderfull. I live in Amsterdam so it's a bit far but than again if she knows about CG method that's worth it. I haven't met an hairdresser in holland who knows about it yet.

I'm not entirely sure if she really knows the CG method but the fact that she knows about sulphates and silicones is already a major thing, and the most important thing is that she seems to respect my ideas. I'm curious to see if she got around to ready my blogposts about CG. I will keep you updated.

There's a salon in Amsterdam called Simcha and even though they do not know about CG, they are supposedly good at cutting curls. You might want to google them. They are quite expensive though. Personally I don't have any experiences with Simcha, but still.

    So today was the day!

She started by washing my hair. She used a low poo and silicone free conditioner, like she used to do in the past. She washed my hair gently though thoroughly by massaging just like I do in the shower. Then she asked me if she could use a regular towel or not because she remembered I had said something about that the week before. I told her I had brought my cotton t-shirt and she used that to dry my hair. This was the first, big plus! I really appreciate that she initiated this. I mean, my hair is not that prone to frizz so a terrycloth towel wouldn't have done too much damage, but obviously I'm really excited about her initiative.

Then we got to the cutting part. I told her exactly what I wanted - a "round" cut, if that makes sense, and layers. I also requested that the bottom layer would be cut a bit shorter because it's almost straight and tends to stick out, which looks terrible. She paid close attention to my requests, but she also made sure that everything she did looks natural and suits my hair's needs.

As she was cutting my hair, we talked quite a lot about hair care. I told her that my previous stylist did not know what I meant when I asked her if she could help me figure out my hair properties. She had no idea what I was referring to when I said that I thought my hair was fine. My old new stylist (so the one I went to today) immediately said I have fine hair, but lots of it. I hadn't even told her that's what I suspected. She could even explain to me why she thought so. She also told me, based on a test, that she thinks my hair is well-moisturised, but needs some protein, which is what I suspected as well.

Another big difference is that my previous stylist just let me sit. Today I was asked to sit straight and put my chin on my chest, so to speak. She seemed to be more precise and accurate. I had completely forgotten that this is the way things go, haha.

Finally, the styling part. Like I requested, she did not blow dry my hair. Instead, she asked me if I could show her how I style my hair with my own gel (KCCC). I showed her how water can give you clumping and how I scrunch in the gel. She was really excited about the immediate results and she is curious to see if she can get Kinky-Curly (and possibly some others lines) to her salon. How amazing would that be if it's feasible?!

Now the result: I am absolutely thrilled. It's a shame the pictures are of a rather poor quality and do not quite live up to reality, but I'm really happy with my cut. She has retained the length really well and my hair falls very naturally. As opposed to before, my hair looks exactly the same as it will do on a daily basis. I don't have pre-pictures because I never style my hair on the day of my cut and with Christmas and all I forgot to take one on the days prior. Instead, I will post my most recent picture, which is actually a pretty good hair day:

This is what my hair looked like after my cut on 4 June 2013 (I hate the poof and lack of definition and lack of shine):

Then today's photos. My stylist told me it actually takes two to three weeks for your hair to really adjust to the cut so I will definitely post a picture again then. Also, it was not entirely dry when I took the picture so it's not super voluminous yet like it does now (but it's just impossible to take a proper picture with the lack of light). It's so shiny and healthy and natural!

I gotta ask...why did you ever leave your old stylist?;)

My old stylist moved to Costa Rica and although I like how my new stylist cuts my hair (technique) she will also use non CG products even though she preaches CG!!! Grrr...
  • LauraimesLauraimes Posts: 880Registered Users
    Thanks everyone!

DCWavyLady, I left her because I moved to the city and I figured it would be more convenient to go to a hair dresser right around the corner.

I think you should talk to your stylist about the products she uses and perhaps consider bringing your own.
