What are those round "Bubble" bits along your hair strand that snap?

I have these hard ball type bits along some of my hair, and then it snaps, what on earth are these?
Fine 3B/C curls.
Currently growing out damage caused by straightening and coloring.

Sounds like single strand knots. You should cut the off right above the ball, closer to your scalp.
