Could This Stuff Be The Problem?

For months I have been trying to sort out the nasty, tangly, rough patches of hair. I stopped using the DE shampoo and started on sulfate shampoo again. It has improved but as soon as I use the conditioners it seems to get funny again. So I'm thinking its the MD butter. My daughter thinks it could be all the oils building up in my hair. How do I fix this? My hair is very dry, color treated 2a/b, med/fine texture, med/thick density, normal porosity and elasticity.

This is what I have been using:

Dessert Essences Organic Shampoo Raspberry Shine:

Water (aqua), rubus idaeus (raspberry) fruit extract*, sodium coco-sulfate (coconut derived), decyl glucoside (from coconut and corn), glycerin, propanediol (from corn), simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*, citric acid, benzyl alcohol (plant derived), potassium sorbate (from fruit), stearyl citrate (vegetable derived), lauryl glucoside (plant derived), hydrolyzed soy protein, dehydroacetic acid, leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate, natural fragrance (parfum

MD Mango Cupuacu Hair/Body Butter: (scrunch in)

Distilled water, mango butter, cupuacu butter, mango oil, rice bran oil, vegetable emulsifying wax, sodium lactate (natural humectant and moisturizer), organic jojoba oil, vitamin B5, vitamin E, palm stearic acid (100% palm oil derived wax), diazolidinyl urea and iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (preservative), fragrance, plantago extract, vitamin C, rosemary oil extract

JCTS: (Leave in)
Water (Aqua) infused with Equisetum Maximum Lam (Horsetail), Mentha Piperita (Peppermint), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary), Laurus Nobilis (Bay Leaf), Ocimum Basilicum (Basil), Arctium Lappa (Burdock Root), Althaea Officinalis (Marshmallow Root), Origanum Vulgare (Oregano), Cymbopogon Flexuosus (Lemongrass), Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme), Salvia Officinalis (Sage) and Urtica Dioica (Nettle); Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Hydrolyzed Oat Flour, Soy Lecithin, Diazolidinyl Urea (and) Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate

Butters and waxes can certainly build up unless you shampoo, oils will generally conditioner only wash out. Are you not conditioning after you shampoo, just applying the butter right to nekkid hair?

Colour treated hair often needs more of the major emollients/ basic conditioning agents (fatty alcohols and cationic surfactants) as these help patch repair damage, aid clumping, give slip, act as weak humectants helping hair hold the right amount of water. Other proven ingredients include coconut oil, hydrolysed protein, ceramides, 18-MEA and panthenol.
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.

So do you shampoo, apply the butter, then the leave in?

I agree, I think you need a conditioning step. Also, I'd apply the leave in before the butter.

I use the JCTS as my conditioner (leave in) after shampooing then scrunch in a small bit of the MD butter. When I don't use the butter my waves aren't as defined and my hair is more frizzy and dry. Maybe I need to find another product to use as a wave definer. I have spent so much $$ on products that don't work for me since going CG (I have a under sink cabinet full of them!). The SMRC conditioner worked great for my hair but my skin didn't like it...itchy and red. Thanks for the responses!

I agree with the others. I think you need to add a rinse out conditioner to your routine. I like Yes to Cucumbers. If you're worried about it being too heavy, you could use something like Suave Naturals (I prefer the Lavender one). Then do the leave in. Then do the butter or whatever styling product you end up with. I had a lot of success using Organix Morroccan Oil curl cream (blue bottle, found at drugstores). I've recently discovered the joys of flax seed gel though. Love that stuff. :)

Hi there! In red I highlighted problem ingredients, in blue other possibly problematic ingredients.

Coco-sulfate is more or less the same as SLS; very frustrating. I've stayed away from the DE shampoos because of that. If you want recs for some new low-poos I can recommend drugstore/Target: YestoCucumbers (the new sulfate free formula), Giovanni poos (50:50, Smooth as Silk, 2chic Argan & Keratin) Others: Curl Junkie Gentle Assurance, Organic Sprout Natural shampoo, BROO IPA. The SM shampoos are well liked but I think you need to really cut back on the butters.

The hair/body butter has way too many butters (can be occlusives) and not enough conditioning agents. Add in the wax and this is probably why your hair is dry. I would ditch this. Firefox highlighted above what kind of ingredients you should look for in conditioners. If you want some recs for conditioners with protein I can say: try Cure Care (from Sally's) is simple and cheap; I use Giovanni Smooth as Silk daily and love it (can also be used a as a leave-in); SheScentIt Okra Reconstructor is an excellent mild PT, rinse-out or LI, doesn't have anything that can buildup; EO Keratin has protein and is conditioning, can be used as deep treatment combined PT/DT depending on your hair. (Mind you my hair really likes protein.) You may want to have some protein-free conditioners and alternate them. Or you can just buy a non-protein conditioner... or even a basic, conditioner like Suave Naturals (since it's cheap) and add drops of CNPF (from Sally's) to get to a level of protein level that you like... you can also add things like honey or coconut oil to it. As far as protein-free conditioners I'm afraid I can't recommend but look around the siggies... I think DB Pumpkin conditioner and CJ products get really good reviews.

You can try some PTs as well. Iagirl's gelatin is cheap and easy to make. CJ Repair Me gets great reviews.

I also think you will benefit from a styler that's a bit moisturizing. I find FSG to be that, without weighing down my hair or leaving anything that can build up. Good definition. It's cheap to make. It's customizable so you can find a concoction that works best for your hair. Honestly I can never say enough good things about FSG.... if you don't want to make it yourself check out fellow wavy, Sweet Curls Elixirs on Etsy. She makes it and can also tailor your product. Okra is supposed to be great too (I've never personally tried it).

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the great info! I have been given so many helpful tips that I can't wait to try them! I'm not using the DE or any MD butters(or any other butters)....ever. Today I used sulfate shampoo (still have a bit of buildup to remove) VO5 Kiwi as a rinse out, JCTS as a LI, and the Moroccan Oil Curl Cream. I'm letting it air dry. So far my hair feels better but seems to be a bit flat and I lost some wave. I'm ok with that for now as I want to take care of the dryness issue first. I am going to try the FS gel. I think that might work well for me. Without all the great info and tips here I would be lost. Thanks again to those who took the time to reply!

If you have gel, try topping the curl cream with just a bit of gel to add hold. I diffuse my hair while upside down, so I end up with root volume.
