Sulfate-free shampoos don't work for me

amareeamaree Posts: 43Registered Users
I have used few sulfate-free shampoos and every time they leave a greasy patch on my crown. I tried rinsing and massaging very long, but still it happens. I tried to switch conditioner many times, some without silicon, some with. And nothing!! Then I went back to my sulfate shampoos and the problem was gone. I wash my hair maybe 2 times a week, sometimes more. I also like to wear my hair straight sometimes, because I love it way more that way. When I wear it straight, the greasiness is more visible.

I feel like maybe I am not getting everything from my curls when using sulphate shampoos. Do I have to just deal with the fact that I need some sulfates in my shampoo?

Still figuring out my properties.

There is a massive range of shampoos out there with and without sulphates so you can't say exclusively that you have to use sulphates as you haven't listed the shampoos you have tried.

Ehhh not everyone uses sulfate free shampoos or cowashes. I use a sulfate shampoo 2-3x/wk and use a cleansing conditioner once every couple of weeks or so.

I use Redken Fresh Curls shampoo and Curl Junkie Daily Fix.
Coarse texture, normal-high porosity, normal elasticity (Komaza Care), very weak waves

rinse out: GVP Conditioning Balm, CJ Beauticurls, CJ Smoothing

I use sulfate shampoos too because my scalp gets oily otherwise and I hate that feeling

I get a oily patch on the crown of my head when I don't rinse out all the cowash or low-poo well enough. I usually part the hair on my crown with my fingers and massage the scalp. I probably do it about 5-6 times across the back of my head.

I also tend to avoid putting rinse out conditioner on my scalp for the same reason.

    Co-wash: Suave Naturals, Cure Care

How long were you using the sulfate free shampoo for? Our scalps over produce oil when we use sulfate shampoos. Once you stop using sulfates, it can take your scalp anywhere from 2-6 weeks to stop over producing oil. Mine was pretty gross for about 3 weeks. I wore it up a lot. Then one day, it was fine and it's been fine ever since. I use sulfates maybe once every 3 or 4 months to clarify, but that's it now.

That said, there are plenty of people that continue to use sulfate shampoo. It is what it is. You might consider using it just on your scalp (put shampoo on fingertips and massage your scalp only, not the hair) so that you aren't stripping the length of your hair. Then either cowash or low poo the length of your hair.

    Good luck!! :)

it depends on what other products you are using too. polyquats are an example of an ingredient that some people have problems with, including myself. i would take a look at all your products and make sure there's nothing in there that the sulfate free shampoo won't take out. there are a lot of different cleansers in a lot of different sulfate free shampoos. some even claim to be sulfate free, but still contain harsh cleansers. what shampoo are you using?

I've used as I am cowash for 4 days straight now with no shampoo and my scalp hasn't been oily 😱I've just been making sure to scrub the heck out of it when I shower

I use a sulfate shampoo once a month to clarify. But other wise I cowash. I use the as I am cowash with no problems. What I do when I clarify, is use the shampoo on my scalp, rinse out, and then cowash the rest of the way. This way my hair doesn't get dried out.

I can't seem to co-wash or do the non-poo cleansers very often, but low poo works fine. Also, Shea Moisture C&H shampoo works well, Deva Low poo, Jessicurl Gentle Lather, Kinky Curly Come Clean, all work as good as regular sulfate on me without being nearly as "stripping" as regular sulfates for me.

Agree. Jessicurl Gentle Lather is my favorite, I think.

Cowashing doesn't leave me greasy but it makes my hair limp and straightens it a bit.
2A/B. Mix of fine, medium, and coarse (mostly medium). Dense. Mix of normal and high porosity.

This has been my problem lately. I have been co washing for 2 weeks now. I never went 2 days without sulfate shampoo before. But my roots are super flat now and my hair is less curly. My main concern is just the extra flat top hair. Any suggestions (anyone)?

Switch to a low poo. Still gentle on your hair but helps with the limp factor. Also, if you can manage it, clip your roots and diffuse your hair or diffuse upside down. Helps with root volume quite a bit.

I've tried clips and diffusing upside down. Makes no difference. Is that SM coconut shampoo a low poo?

I love the SM Baby wash/shampoos, in addition to the Coconut & Hibiscus. Extremely gentle, yet effective.

I just tried the shampoo. I used it by itself to see how it would affect my hair. Wow. It made my hair so tangled! It also dried it out. Tomorrow I will use my as I am cowash again. Maybe if I use it and follow it with the cowash? Since the cowash leaves my hair soft and is great for detangling. Any suggestions?

To be fair, if you use a shampoo (even a sulfate free one), you typically have to follow u with a rinse out conditioner. Shampoo is meant to clean, not condition and provide slip like conditioner does.

I'm going to go back to using another shampoo. Can I return the shea moisture to target? It did have a seal when u remove the cap that I had to take off to use it. Will they refuse it? I've never returned a shampoo to target before

No. I used it alone to see how it would feel in my hair. It dried it the moment it touched it

I've used other shampoos before that didn't dry out my hair or tangle it up

Oh I ALWAYS have to condition after a low poo.

I'd love to know which shampoos worked that way!! I have still not settled on a cleanser after all these months. I've never had a poo of any level I didn't have to use a conditioner with unless it had silicone in it maybe?

Same here. Now I'm curious. I've used cleansing conditioners (think Wen) without following up with a rinse out, but never a low poo or shampoo.

Have you tried YesToCarrots nourishing shampoo and conditioner? I really like them! They are relatively inexpensive and can be found at Target. They contain sodium coco-sulfate, which, I have read is very similar to sodium lauryl sulfate (or sodium laureth sulfate, I can't remember which). Some people say it's slightly gentler than sodium lauryl sulfate, others say it's about the same. For me it doesn't matter. I think my hair may like sulfates. It's 2a, I think, currently and very fine. I do have a hard time getting it to curl though. Even if something isn't CG, I think if it works for your hair, go for it. :)
