The science of product rotation. Why do you rotate products?

I have noticed a lot of people on here have "bundles" or different groups of products they use on different days. This made me think of back in my non cg days where I would switch up what I was using because after a while I felt my hair just got used to it. I don't know if it was just in my head or what.

Now to the folks that do this. Can you share your bundles etc. Lol? Also why do you do this in particular?

This is a good question. If I might add another part to it, if anyone has a scientific explanation for product rotation I'd love to hear it. I've always been curious.

What I do is consider the dew point and weather forecasts, and evaluate the condition of my hair, keeping in mind how long ago it was that I washed it. I don't seem to have problems with minor buildup with products I use, which I suspect may contribute to perceptions that hair needs product rotation to prevent habituation to favourite products. I often use the same products, but just change up the ratios; and when I make changes it's usually just because I'm feeling a little bored, or want to see what something else will do for me (then I wonder why I did that again).

No science for me either, it's pure economics as far as I'm concerned. My hair does it's best with Beauticurls li and CIAB but this is expensive for me to get shipped here, so on days when it doesn't matter so much what my hair's doing I use (atm) KCKT (can get cheap shipping from iherb) and an Aussie product by Nak, called Options. As far as shampoo, conditioner and mousse go, I just use whatever, usually have a couple of choices but no rhyme or reason as to what I use on any given day.

That's funny.... I used to rotate products in my non-CG days too, because I felt my hair was too used to it or something. I also wondered why people do rotations, aside from changes of summer to winter or vice versa. I'd be ecstatic to use one product long enough anymore to feel the need for a rotation.

My hair does kind of get "bored" with products. like if I have been doing a certain routine for too long my hair would be like "Nope" and I would have to switch it up. I find this to happen more with RO conditioners and cowashes than stuff I leave in. I think its because I am willing to/need to rotate my LI/stylers more than the stuff I rinse out.

I suppose it could be compared to food. If we eat the same thing everyday, our bodies will lack in something. Maybe it's just as simple as that?

I don't really rotate what I use to wash my hair so much as I choose it based on a number of factors, mostly how long it's been since I last washed my hair and how dirty I perceive it to be, and how moist or dry my hair seems to be. If my hair isn't particularly dirty, I co-wash. If my hair seems unusually dirty, I'll use a low-poo. If my hair seems dirtier than usual, but on the dry side, I'll use cleansing conditioner. Almost all of the time, VO5 Kiwi-Lime Squeeze Conditioner does a really great job of cleaning my hair without drying it out; and it's cheap and easy to find.

For styling, I almost always use the same products, I just vary the ratios, depending on the dew point and the weather forecast. When I travel, I simplify my routine so that I don't have to deal with awkward containers or too many of them for the baggie I pack them in.

Wow this is interesting! And thanks for the link to the old thread.@CathyMack I should have searched harder. I am broke to. . I'll have to rotate if I look into more boutique/ expensive products I here a little goes a long way though.

I like to rotate products too! Its cause I enjoy doing so not really a need. I also remember what my hair looks like with certain combinations (ex:today is a shea moisture day etc.)

I had to pick up a gel because my hair seems to not take mouse in the winter. I need a better hold or else its very dry and frizzy with the cold wind. so im using gel for the winter instead of mouse.

I think I'm starting to see this...I actually think I need more protein and more hold in encourage my curls in cold weather, rather that more moisture and using mousse. My hair just gets more limp and less curly as the day goes on, very annoying! I hadn't thought of switching to a gel but I think I may do this now you have mentioned it :)

When I set up my espresso machine, my water measured a 3 of 4 on the test strip. It's hard, but it's not HARD (like well water)--doesn't require a water softener. I don't have a problem with the bars, if your water is HARD, soap bars may not be for you (unless you have a water softener.) I have HARD water at my vacation home, use a water softener and we don't have problems with soap scum, etc.

Except for the products I make (FSG and okra gel), I buy products online.

For me, it is a lot of different reasons. I like to try new products and I actually use different kind of products for different kind of hairstyles. I also don't really like my hair to "attach" to one type of product, because then eventually it stops working the same way it did (know from experience.) Another reason is money, some products I use are very expensive and sometimes I just don't want to spend that amount of money again, so I use another cheaper product.

Thanks. I've gone to the same stylist for 30+ years. Get a wet cut. My straight haired aunt has gone to him almost as long and her hair always looks great, too. He just knows how to cut hair.

    That's fine.

I think there are a lot of pros and cons to a pixie. You have lovely features, so you're in good shape there. They are easy to take care while you have them. They need frequent cuts and are time consuming to grow out.
