Torn between growing my hair out and a pixie cut. =/

pprMACHEheartpprMACHEheart Posts: 1,665Registered Users
I've had my hair hover around the same length for about 3 years now, although I know when I straighten it my hair has grown quite a bit. It's just that my curls are so tight that my hair looks like it's growing out rather than down. I know my hair type is prone to that (3c/4a). I thought that after it being colored it would hang a little more, maybe loosen up the curl but my hair has proven to be resilient.

Now, I've always wanted super long curly hair, but currently I'm obsessed with chopping it all off into a simple pixie cut. Any 3b/3c/4a's have a pixie cut or have pushed past the awkward phase of your hair growing outward and eventually gaining enough weight that it hangs more?

Any help/opinions/etc would be helpful.

I think you should go for the pixie. Otherwise, you'll always wonder.

That is true. I've always said that I wanted to cut my hair super short before I reached thirty.

I could always include a picture of my hair the way it is now, if that helps too.

I would second the pixie idea! You can always grow your hair out and you'll wonder what if...
If it helps..? Its been almost a month since I chopped mine.
    Its quite freeing :)

Hmm . . I've never had hair shorter than my shoulders before, so it would be a drastic change. We'll see . .

Do you mean a twa? I think as a 3c/4a that what you'd get unless you plan on flat ironing. I cut my hair a lil over 2 months ago and I love it. My hair is so soft and healthy, it dries super fast, and I hardly use any product. I love that it is super freeing. However, if you do have to goal to ultimately grow your hair long, are you okay with being 1 to 2 year behind your hair growth goal? I say cornrow your hair and then wear a short curly wig and test your twa.

This is what I imagine your pixe would look like:

    No, not a TWA . .

    Something like this . .

    Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 6.27.49 PM.jpg

    960012_10151912059027272_1871445731_n.jpg

Something along these lines . . obviously with tighter curls. I want wan actual style, just not one length all over.

Hi, your hair looks pretty in your icon pic :)

Since your hair is prone to so much shrinkage, you would have to straighten a pixie length cut to attain the look in that first pic IMO (I mean that lady has straight hair). I agree with others: that length on you from the 1st pic (unstraightened) would be a TWA, or close to it. TWAs are wonderful, elegant and as I understand it, relatively easy take care of. That could be a great choice!

As for the 2nd pic - is that Alicia Keys? - her hair is a different, looser curl pattern from yours - much closer to 3b w/3c tendencies. My guess is she has used some hair spray or other product to give it that little bit of extra volume. Still, there's no reason you couldn't go for that sort of shape, especially since you already have wonderful volume. Just be careful - you would want the stylist to take off just a little hair at a time so you can achieve that shape w/out getting too much cut off. You would be safest getting your hair cut while dry and in it's natural state IMO.

I think it would look super cute on you! Although I totally love how your hair is now. My only advice is make sure it's what you absolutely want, because you can't put hair back on. I'm not sure you could get your hair to look like the 2nd picture, I also think you might end up with a TWA.

Go for a pixie cut! I think everyone should rock short hair at least once. For me, this was recently when I cut off all my straight ends so my hair was ear-lobe length. Not quite as drastic as a pixie-cut, but it was my first short hair style!

I have to say, I've really loved having short hair. I want to grow it long eventually, but it's refreshing to kind of start new with your hair - cut off all those tired ends and just revitalise your hair and your look. I think it's a good thing to do if you've been stuck at that awkward length for a while as it gives you a nice change :)

I totally don't want a TWA, but more of a style. I guess I may not cut it then. I know the first picture, the girl has curly hair, but she flatirons it to get it to look that way.

The A. Keys one is my attempt to look for someone with more of an actual textured hair cut.

Yes, I could see you pulling this off, but it gets back to the thing I mentioned above: a shorter cut (like this one above) is a cut that could easily end up being a TWA in the wrong hands, and I doubt you want to see all that pretty hair on the floor, when that's not what you were aiming for.

You should take that pic w/you when you see an experienced stylist w/a solid reputation for cutting kinky/coily hair IMO. I say this because it's far too easy for most stylists to cut k/c hair as if it were loose curls, so that the result is an unintended TWA.

Also, it will be important for her/him to be conservative and trim it gradually, making sure you're comfortable w/it the amount of hair taken off, every step of the way.
  • pprMACHEheartpprMACHEheart Posts: 1,665Registered Users
Definitely. I usually get my hair cut at a Devachan Salon anyway, so I've never had bad experiences. The woman I go to is never scissor happy and I usually bring pictures anyway.

If you do it, be sure to post a picture.. I am very curious! You have one of those pretty faces with high cheek bones that could probably pull off any hairstyle you want. I've always been partial to the "funky" look.

I say go for it. You can always cut it a bit less and see how your reacts before you go all out. But then again I'm the all or nothing type. Take the plunge! You can and you will rock it. You'll inspire people along the way. My sudden chopped set off the domino effect of hair risks throughout my friends and family. Its fun and a great way to start afresh.

Yeah, it seems cool to do. I mean my hair grows super fast anyway. I keep seeing these pictures of curlies with these super long curls, but Idk how long it'll take for my hair type to get hang like that though and have my curls hang without water weight.

Here are three pictures of my hair before I cut it. And two from my hair cut. I hope this might help you make a decision... I was kind of in a weird mood after I cut my hair. Usually I like my hair better when it grows in a bit. Now that it has its not so bad. The hair kinda molds with itself and you learn to style it as well. Its gonna bug the crap out of you until you do it. Trust me.

Okay so before you get too excited. I want you to know you may have made me think more about going through with a pixie cut myself...
I watched a TON of videos online and I think I may take the plunge.
My birthday is on November 12th and my parents are so pissed. My mom is hella mad and she already wants me to grow my hair back out. She's like I don't mean to make you upset or anything but you looked so much better with your long hair blah blah blah.
I know she means well but I just hate that she can't see what I see.
I think I will take the plunge. Do you ladies think I could pull it off?
And girl you won't be alone :happy8:

Nope, haven't done it yet. I'm not a spontaneous person when it comes to my hair, I have to think on it and actually find a cut I'm comfortable with. Since the others I've posted made me rethink my hair type and the way it would look, now I have to look for a cut that would work with my curls.
