HOT ROOTS - How to avoid them?

CurliniCurlini Posts: 258Registered Users
I color at home with professional color; I went a little redder over the past few months and now I'm getting hot roots. :(
I've been doing some reading up and it looks like I should go one shade darker (level 7 in my case) on root touch ups and use one shade lighter (a level 6) when refreshing the ends. I also understand I need to use a neutral base with the red in proportion to my grays.
Does this make sense? I would love to hear insights on how to avoid hot roots!
Medium Texture/Normal Porosity
Conditioners: Curl Junkie conditioners, Elucence moisture balancing, Darcy's pumpkin seed, Mop Top Daily
Gels: CJ Pattern Pusha, CJ Curl Queen, UFDCM, Mop Top Curly Custard, KCCC (wish it didn't take so long to dry!), CJ Aloe Fix Lite
Weekly PT (CJ Repair Me) & DT
Icequeen method
CG since Aug. 08, still a lot to learn

Having dyed my hair in cool reds for perhaps a decade .... Do not 'refresh' the lengths with permanent or demi permanent dye, over time this causes damage making the ends more porous worsening the chances of a mismatch between the older and younger hair. Use a peroxide free semi permanent on the lengths.
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
    Experimenting with: benign neglect

Thanks so much Firefox - I was hoping you'd see this and I would benefit from your sage advice :)
Peroxide-free semi-permanent? What brands would you recommend?

I know you can get them in natural colours in Sallys, but I'm not familiar with US brands except for 'fashion colours' like Manic Panic so wouldn't want to suggest a particular one.
