Porosity ?

AnsleyBirch13AnsleyBirch13 Posts: 180Registered Users
I've been on the CG method since summer, and I've just recently learned about porosity. Can someone please explain this to me, and how to I know if my hair is low, high, or normal. Thank you!:)

WITHOUT product - if it dries fast (like within a couple hours) it's high. If it takes like 6 hours to dry, it's low. If it's somewhere in the middle, it's medium.

I second this. Also low porosity has a natural shine to it and gets build up easily, even on coarse, dry or kinky hair types.

I forgot to add, that NC has an article about porosity and so does www.livecurlylivefree.com.

My hair dries fast, but that's with gel and curling smoothie in it. I'll have to try it without products. I found a test on a lot of websites that said to take a strand or two and place it in room temperature water. If it doesn't sink it's low, and if it sinks fast it's high. Mine didn't sink. Does this work or mean anything?

The water test is pretty unreliable. I'd just go with how fast your hair dries, if it tends to absorb products or if they just sit on top, how greasy or dry it gets etc.

You can also run your finger up and down a strand of your hair - if it squeaks going up and down, it's low porosity and if it feels rough and resistant, it's high :)

When I run my fingers up and down a strand of my hair, it squeaks, so low? But my hair also dries pretty fast, in around an hour or two. But that's with product. So I'm thinking low, but I'm not to sure

But I have noticed that when I spray my hair with water (like from a spray bottle), that a lot of the time some of the water just slides off and doesn't get absorbed into my hair. I have to spray extra to get my hair damp. If this means anything haha.

That is more typical of low porosity hair, which is hard for water to penetrate. If you have a low density of hair, then your hair drying on two hours may still be a long time. I'd recommend doing a hair analysis.

The squeak test has been debunked too, behaviour of the hair (absorption of water, penetrating oils, effect of humidity and humectants, speed of drying of nekkid hair) or a proper analysis under a microscope is more reliable.

Ok. I'll just wet my hair tomorrow and time how long it takes to dry. Does this require me to actually wash it, or can I just soak it and rinse it out?

While some of the descriptors are low porosity, I think the drying time is more indicative of the hair porosity.

I have low density/low porosity/fine hair. It still takes a LONG time to dry without product! When I worked, and didn't use product, it was 5-6 hours after diffusing for a few minutes. Now, I wrap in a Curlease towel, after putting in product, while dressing and putting on makeup; scrunch with CLU towel and diffuse for 5-10 minutes. It still takes a few hours to dry.

Hair that dries in an hour or two, with product, is at least normal porosity (if it's diffused for a bit) and high porosity, if not.

I wet, use a rinse out and style every day. Only time I shampoo is if I use an ingredient it doesn't like (every few months.)

I take back my statement. It feels like everything I've learned has been a lie, or my hair analysis was wrong! It came back low porosity, but my hair dries in like 2 hours without product. So apparently this isn't really an accurate way to tell either.

So should I just get mine tested or...?
  • BotticelliBritBotticelliBrit Posts: 2,075Registered Users
I'd get it tested - that's what I'm planning to do. I'd rather know for sure, that way I can make sure everything I'm doing is what's best for my hair type

sixelamy, where did you get your analysis done?

I recommend the Goosefootprints (etsy) analysis. It's on $22 and it's very thorough, plus she includes a ton of useful information that helps choose products.

I was looking at the Goosefootprints one too since I've heard some mixed things about the Live Free one. What are people's experiences with either of these?
