Darn my sensitive skin...

I've got the most awful rash on the backs of my hands and forearms all the way to the elbow from using a new type of lotion on Sunday. My skin is all red and swollen and ITCHY and generally very unattractive. The most surprising thing is that it was Aveda Hand Therapy lotion... I'd never used it before but never expected to get a rash from it! Isn't it supposed to be "all natural"? This used to happen to me frequently when I was younger--I'd use a random type of lotion or accidentally put two types of lotion on my hand (one then a different type later) and I'd get a bad rash. It even happened on my face several times. Ugh. I'm also very suceptible to poison ivy and got it almost every summer growing up from tromping around in the bushes.

Anyone else been through this and have a suggestion to make the rash clear up faster? I've been putting 2% Hydrocortizone on it when it gets really itchy and I took a 24 hr. Claritin when I first noticed it and again the next day.

Help!!!

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. You could try Benadryl at night instead of Claritin... that's what my friend does when he gets hives.

2% wont really do anything if your rash is that bad. Euchrin lotion, or what I like better is any fragrent free shea butter lotion. The itchyness is concerning though, becasue the rash might be in your blood stream, are you rashing in only certain areas or all over? If its in your blood stream you will need to go to the doc to get a steroid cream or shot

The only thing I can use is the Cetaphil in the pump container.

I've definitely gotten rashes similar to what you described with the other stuff. As for getting rid of it...I'd try to bother it as little as possible. I wouldn't wear clothing that rubs against it or anything.

I read your mind! I picked up some Benadryl while I was out at Kroger just a bit ago.

The 2% hydrocortisone is prescription strength that I got from a doc a while back... isn't OTC hydrocortisone cream usually .5% ? And I'm only rashing on the backs of my hands and forearms-- I did have to go on steroids once to get rid of poison ivy. I may go to the health and counseling center to get it looked at tomorrow. But I think I will put my shea butter lotion on it once the weepy-ness goes away. Yuck!

I'll remember the Cetaphil rec... It'll be a while before I start randomly trying lotion again! I wish I could wear t-shirts to keep it from getting irritated, but the weather here is not that cooperative.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Benadryl does wonders for itchy skin. My allergies often manifest themselves as horribly itchy skin (along with the usual watery itchy eyes, sneezing, massive headache and generally feeling like poo). I can handle all the rest of it with a simple dose of ibuprofen, but the itch skin just makes me crazy, and Benadryl is the only thing that works.

lol I didn't think about the benedryl thing and went straight to the steroid shot. I'm alergic to antihistimines so I can't take them for the itchyness. I had a rash so bad once that I thought I was going to die wearing clothes. I ended up having to be on a steroid pill for 3 weeks and get 5 steroid shots to get it out of my blood....it was exzema gag

Aveda products contain a lot of botanical ingredients that many people are sensitive to. And for a line that promotes itself as "natural," they contain a lot of un-natural ingredients as well.

Thats what my Dads doctor told him aswell. His medication makes him really sensitive and the only thing that he likes (and uses religiously) is Goats Milk lotion.
