Ready to Quit CG after 2.5 years (2a - 2c, fine, medium porosity)

I've given it 2.5 years and it is just not working. I have had a few good hair days that keep me going but I think I may be ready to throw in the towel unless you all can give me some product suggestions.
for the last 7 months I've modified CG by shampooing my hair every 2-3 days (prior to that, I was using CG approved shampoo only every 10-14 days). My hair look dry and with lots of fly aways and breaks like crazy. My curls are undefined on most days (my hair is 2c at the base of my neck but the top and back of my hair is 2a/2b).
I would really like input if you have similar hair as to what products you use (specific brands, please) as I feel like I have wasted so much money trying different products.
Before going CG, my hair looked good with John Freida frizz ease shampoo and their frizz ease serum and I am so tempted to go back!
Currently the only product in my line-up I am happy with is the kinky curly knot today conditioner. I use aubrey organics shampoo which is ok. I have tried so many CG approved gels, mousses, leave-ins, etc.
Thanks in advance!

What are your hair properties and dew points/ humidity? Are you working with these when choosing ingredients and products?

Knot Today is not a 'true' conditioner, it contains no oils and little in the way of fatty alcohols and cationic surfactants. It's also pH 7 which is not ideal for hair at pH ~4.5
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
    Experimenting with: benign neglect

    My density is low
My porosity is high (I know I originally said medium)
    My length is medium

I have never given much thought about humidity but the climate where I live is pretty stable (today's humidity is 45%)

I haven't been doing this very long.. but my hair sounds similar to yours ( more curl though I think) and I was ready to give up too until I tried something completely different. My hair just looked and felt like crap no matter what cg friendly products I used. I'm quite happy with it now.

First off "looks dry, breaks off" etc. sounds exactly like what my hair did when I put the new expensive, organic, natural.. and full of protein products on it. Sure enough when I looked at the ingredients of my HG non-cg products, none of them had protein.

What I did was sulfate wash my hair (no silicones) and go back to my HG pre-cg conditioner, Aussie Moist. It has one silicone but from what I've been able to research it does not build up.. and my experience had proved that. For a few days all I did was co wash with it and put a little in as leave in. There was an immediate huge improvement in my hair. I did have some frizz though so I started digging through my other pre-cg favorite stylers and found my loreal eversleek frizz taming creme serum was silicone free, so I added it to my routine. That is all I use and my hair is soft, shiny, curly, no frizz, and I have great second day hair. It also takes less than an hour to air dry. I do not have huge clumps of curls but I can live with that. So my suggestion is start with the conditioner, find one that your hair likes, and only add other products if you really need them, just a little at a time. Less is more for me and all those oils, butters, gels, etc. were more problematic than helpful.

I tried an Aubrey Organic shampoo a while ago and it made my hair incredibly dry!! I was thinking the same as waymire.. do your products contain protein? Have you done any deep conditioning treatments? My favorite products are in my signature. Have you tried a diluted ACV rinse after your shampoo? That might be beneficial.

Thank you for your suggestions! I will try some different conditioners and try to avoid proteins. I have been reading about ACV rinses but I've never done one so I will try it!

My hair was curlier before going CG and I'm often tempted to go back....
I still haven't found the right products yet but my hair likes Giovanni (doesn't improve the curl but makes it feel nice).

It might be that you're getting problems from using anionic and cationic surfactants together. This stuff is useful to know whether you do CG or not:

    Can glucosides remove silicone build-up?

Don't be afraid to try silicones, particularly the ones that resist build-up. Some people do better with silicones than with CG. I'm experimenting with this myself and having an awesome time with an amodimethicone conditioner. If it doesn't work out, CG will still be there.

My aussie moist has Bis-Aminopropyl Dimethicone and I haven't had any problems at all with build up.. I haven't used anything else on my hair in several weeks, other than my serum (which is silicone free). I had this nasty patch of dry rough hair on the back of my head the entire time I was strict cg.. it was gone in two washes once I switched.
