Define 3b curls?

LoveLongCurlsLoveLongCurls Posts: 53Registered Users Curl Neophyte
I've been curly now for 1 year and I have a regimen that works well for my hair but there is this one problem I can't seem to solve. My curls are great when they're wet and they're nice dry but when my hair dries I have a lot of shrinkage and the curls seem to all blend together in this huge poof I want to define each curl and have each curl stand out on its own rather than it all blending into one big poof. lol I think I would do what's called a modified CG I shampoo once a week but I typically stick to co-washing and DC and I toss in oil treatments if I find it necessary. So does anyone have any suggestions to get well defined curls? Thanks :)

I'm not sure what you want?? You say you have a routine that works for you, yet your hair becomes one big poof. Doesn't sound like it's working to me.

It could be product and/or technique. You could need protein and/or moisture. Do you know you're texture?? Are you sure about the porosity?? I can't use the SM C& H line on my hair. It just sits and doesn't absorb. I have to wash it out. Have you had a good cut lately for shaping and layers? Do you do anything to keep the weight of your dense, long hair from pulling out the curl??

To add to what Kathymack said, I wonder if you're using gel. A gel (or jelly product) scrunched gently into wet hair, evenly distributed from root to tip, air dried or diffused, can really help with curl definition.

When I say it works I meant that my curls hold and style well with the products I use and my hair is soft but I have hair that naturally sort of "poofs" out. I don't have layers and I just recently got a trim. Maybe my hair needs more protein.. What would be telling signs that my hair needs more protein? and Curlini I have tried some gels but they tend to make my hair crunchy but I do have some left over gels maybe I can try to experiment more...

if you don't have layers that will make the dreaded 'triangle,' if that is what you mean.
LONG layers are good for curly hair, keeps hair in a good shape, helps the curls form better.

You can scrunch the crunch out after your hair dries. The gel cast keeps the curls defined while it's drying so you won't get that "poof" you speak of.

I would suggest using some type of gel and then finger curling your hair.

I was considering layers recently because I'm getting this odd look because when wet it makes a semi U shape with my ends and when it dries it does take on a more triangle-like shape at times. I don't like it too much but I still have about 5 inches left until my hair is at the length I'd like it. Would it be better to get it layered before or after I reach my desired length? I had assumed it would be better when it reached desired length so that I only get as much cut as necessary.. I also need to find a good salon here that can work with curly hair..

Also, thanks for the tip sixelamy I'll definitely try that!

Not everyone's hair likes layers, but for people who respond well to layers, those layers can create quite a transformation in the way the curls look and behave.

When my hair was all one length and very long, it was as wavy as it was curly, and without layers, my curls didn't "pop" as much (It was 3a/b and some hair even looser). Then I got lots of layers and now I'm a 3a/b/c (mostly 3b). Granted, your curls may not behave like mine, but feel free to check out my pic albums to get an idea of for how layering type 3b hair can make the curls pop.

Currently I'm washing my hair with shampoo once a week and co-washing maybe.. 2-3 days a week.. lately it's been only two and on days where I'm not doing much I let it air dry with a leave in conditioner and then put it up in a bun or ponytail to keep it off my neck. If I want to wear my hair down I style it with some creams and mousse and little (like seriously small lol) amounts of gel and let it air dry.

I think I might need a layer after all. When my hair had been shorter I hadn't had awesome products because i had still been experimenting but I do believe my hair had a more defined curl pattern. I think layers would probably help a lot thanks!

@Marixpress I rake but I do not shake I'll definitely try that out or try to scrunch more. Thanks!

Gels are necessary for a lot of people to get the definition they need. They don't all have to be crunchy.

    1. Even in hard hold gels, you can often scrunch out the crunch. I use Volumax Mega, which I put on soaking wet hair and then add more water. When I diffuse I swear it doesn't even have any crunch (which is weird... I know maybe because it's so watered down). If there is crunch, you can scrunch it out once completely dry... then your hair feels like hair and less like the 80's.

    2. Medium or light hold gels often don't have crunch. FSG dries crunch-less on me.

Have you tried layering gels? Many have luck with using lots of clumping film-former gelies/gels like FSG or Okra or Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic gel, and then topping it if necessary with a little bit of a hard hold gel like the LA Looks gels.

    Good luck!

Hmm never tried layering the only gel-like product I use is Shea moisture souffle gel but it's a water/jelly like consistency and it doesn't make my hair crunch so I use small amounts of it. But I'll definitely try that! Thanks! :D

I used a bit more gel and did the rake and shake and scrunched out most of the hardness of the gel and I think it really helped give my curls some definition thanks for the tips everyone!

Question: what exactly is the "triangle"? I've heard about it, but I'm not quite sure what it looks like

Exactly! Pyramid hair is also known as east-west hair because the hair has lots of volume laterally but is relatively flat in the top/crown area. Strategically cut long or short layers can break up that wall of hair and will create more even volume throughout.
