question about thinning technique with bangs

I had two people do my bangs the last two weeks, because the first did an awful job, but both of them did something in common that hurt. They did this technique to thin out/take out volume (which I didn't want) but where they go down with the scissors, down the hair and like bounch the scissors (sorry I describe it like that, but they had me turned so I couldn't see what they were doing), but it hurt. Is it supposed to hurt?? I felt like they were pulling out my baby hairs by my temples, that's what it felt like. When they do that, do they really pull hairs out?? I don't want to think that they pulled any of my hairs out!! i know the "thinning" aspect is just illusional and my hair is still there ,but those pulls I felt were not fun.
