CG Dog shampoos and leave-in conditioners good for people

I have been CG since July. I have been using V05 conditioners, mostly the strawberry, for a co wash. With the LA Looks gel and BRHG I use for product, my scalp was starting to feel itchy and my hair too producty.

I noticed the ingredients in my dog's shampoo and leave- in conditioner and thought I would try them for myself. It's very concentrated, so I don't need much. The fragrance is great. It's vanilla and honey, not very perfumey or strong.

Petology Oatmeal & Honey Natural Soothing Shampoo:

Ingredients: Sulfate-Free Cleansers Infused with Natural Oils, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Protein Building Amino Acid Complex with Hair Protecting Antioxidants, Organic Colloidal Oatmeal, Organic Shea Butter, Honey Complex, Keratin Deep Moisturizing Complex, NaturShine, Vitacon, PMC, Green Tea Extract, Chamomile, Fragrance.

Petology Oatmeal & Honey Conditioning Spray:

Ingredients: Aloe Barbendisis Leaf Juice, Water, NaturShine*, Organic Colloidal Oatmeal, Organic Shea Butter, Honey Complex, Polysorbate 20, Argan Oil, Abyssinian Oil; Vitacon**, PMC*** (Plant Moisturizing Complex), Fragrance.

*NaturShine: patent pending all natural complex replenishes the shine and conditioning effects of canine sebum. Makes the coat soft and water repellant with superior shine.

**Vitacon: patented vitamin complex of A, B-12, C, D, E, Green Tea and Chamomile provides outstanding benefits to the skin.

***Plant Moisturizing Complex: natural plant derived ingredients ensure instant deep hydration, and generates a moisture reservoir that lasts up to 72 hours.

Have any of you ever tried using your dog shampoo and conditioning products as your CG method?

Thoughts? :dog:

Just so this doesn't sound completely ridiculous, dog shampoos and conditioners have really improved and contain a lot of natural ingredients not found in people products.

I think that it's because dogs go so long between shampoos and require spray conditioning between shampoos, that their shampoos and conditioners seem great for curly people on the CG method and not shampooing often during the week.

I have never tried dog stuff but I do use horse detangler myself. Also my mom uses horse shampoo amd conditioner on her own hair. Mane and Tail's original conditioner is also cone free. It is great for protein treatments as well.

You can use pet products but make yourself aware of two things
    1. The labelling rules in your country. They may not have to put all the ingredients on products for pets or not in the correct order of most to least concentrated, different rules to human haircare basically
    2. The pH of the product. I have no idea what pH a canine's skin and hair prefers.

As I read the ingredients I was thinking "Dang, that dog gets pampered!"... but please remember that although you probably love him/her as family you're still not related. I can't help but wonder what is in that Nature-shine complex... it could be something perfectly safe... and it may not, you don't know if you could end up with irritation or an allergic reaction. So think about it, with so many good products for humans in the market there has to be some that suit your needs.

You may consider going to a health food store to take a look at some of the hair products there. I favor Nature's Gate in particular as I used a couple of their COs in the past. One with tea tree oil may take care of your itchy scalp, but in the case of
itching that is not the initial one when the scalp is "healing" from the use of harsh shampoos, you have to consider the possibility of an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients of the products you are using right now.

    I
n the meantime, if you have a different CG friendly CO you can use, switch to it and scrub really well, you may even want to consider making a brown sugar scrub for your scalp. Then rinse longer than you normally do AND don't apply a LI on or near your scalp.

Dog's skin does have a somewhat different pH range than human skin, but dog shampoos and conditioners don't necessarily have a different pH range than human skin will tolerate. I stumbled a cross a dog groomer's blog that had some science-y posts in it related to dog vs. human shampoos and conditioners, and this lady, Barbara Bird, had even done a pH study on various dog and human shampoos and conditioners. Very interesting reading, especially since I co-wash my dog with Cure Care, which works better for him than any dog-specific shampoo I tried.

In addition, there may be ingredients allowed in products made for animals which have been outlawed for use in products meant for humans, or differences in the quality of ingredients which may be used.
