Going COLD TURKEY!!

MarixpressMarixpress Posts: 91Registered Users
Today is my birthday... well not really but it is the first day of using the Curly Girl method! I searched through all my hair care products' ingredient lists and tossed the bad ones (most of them sadly). This marks the start of my hair journey :occasion7:

Here's my story w/ pics:

I grew up with a full head of curls that my mother didn't know what to do with. She would brush them out every day :dontknow: That led to a lifetime of hideous hair. I thought the only way to achieve beautiful hair was to blow dry, which I didn't know how to do properly either :laughing8:

Then, FINALLY, in 2009 I learned Ouidad's "rake & shake" method and styling products which seriously changed my life!

Fortunately/Unfortunately, that was the same year I discovered the Sedu Revolution straightening iron...

I became "addicted" to straightening until one day I noticed my curls were completely gone and in its place was a wavy/straight combo of wild mane :confused2: Not only were my curls gone but so was a bunch of hair. I could now pin up all of my hair with one small bobby pin.

I stopped straightening for a WHOLE YEAR before it grew out enough to a point where I could cut out the "dead" ends. I pulled up a few YouTube diy haircut videos, grabbed my scissors and went to town. My curls miraculously sprung back to life!

The fab hair didn't last long. It's been falling out at an alarming rate, falling flat and feeling dry. I decided today to take the plunge. I want to take my hair's health back and care for my curls the way they deserve to be treated. Thanks for listening. Some people think this is about vanity but it's not. Our spirit lives in our hair!

Your curls are beautiful! I abused the heck out of mine with heat too (your hair in the first two pics of the second post looks all too familiar) and am just starting to take care of it again. Happy CG Birthday :)

For the next month, these will be the ONLY products to touch my hair! I found everything I needed at Target (minus the Ouidad products. I got those on Folica.com last year). Tomorrow I will use Suave Naturals clarifying shampoo to start. I guess that makes my official Day One tomorrow :occasion9:

I just wanted to say I LOVE your natural curls! They are so awesome! I was also addicted to my straightener because my mom didn't know anything about curly hair growing up and when I found it, that was it!! I gave it up almost a month ago now and am starting to see my old curls, although I know it used to be way curlier than it is now.

    Good luck!! :)

Day 1 - Washed with Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo; Washed again with 1/2 Suave and 1/2 Tresseme Naturals Conditioner; Conditioned with Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab Volumizing Conditioner. Scrunch dried with microfiber towel.
Leave in: SheaMoisture Yucca & Aloe Thickening Growth Milk. Air dried.

    Day 2 Left alone entirely.

Day 3 - Wet (but not saturated) hair in the shower. Scrunched Tresseme Naturals conditioner into ends one pea size amount at a time until it was lightly and evenly coated. Then took another pea size amount, rubbed hands together and lightly coated hair at my crown. (I lost only one strand of hair surprisingly!) Did not wash conditioner out. Scrunch with microfiber towel, then air dry. Once hair dried, I flipped my head down and picked with a hair pick.

My hair was much better with conditioner left in it than when I just used the Shea Moisture milk. I will need to pick up some hairspray to keep the big picked out look. It looks great for a little while but then eventually falls flat again. I would love to hear your hairspray recommendations. Today is 4th day hair. I'm going to co-wash for the first time tomorrow morning.

First Co-Wash today with Tresseme Naturals conditioner. The formula is thicker than I expected. I ended up using about 20 pumps. It helped to add water to the conditioner which made it thinner and easier to apply. I will probably add water to the bottle itself to make it a runny consistency.

I then used Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab Volumizing Conditioner, and SheaMoisture Yucca & Aloe Thickening Growth Milk.

    Air Dry...

    ***************************
    Things I don't like:

I lost the same amount of hair as I would have if I used a sulfate shampoo. *However, the strands were noticeably thicker than before using the thickening milk!

Air drying takes too long! My hair has that wet look until noon until it's dry enough to start picking it out. I think I'll start diffusing on low heat in the mornings when my hair is wet.

Day 1 always looks the worst to me. Looks like I'll need to add a styling product in addition to my volumizing milk to hold the curl. Instead it gets limp like you can see here.

    ***************************
I could use a CG cut.

Lastly, I'm still not sure how to tell if I need more protein. I stretched my hair dry and there was no stretch or break. I tried to stretch it while wet and some hairs stretched but didn't break. Others stretched and went back to their shape. Some others didn't stretch at all. One stretched then broke. I'll have to research proteins a little more.

We do have similar hair! And that's exactly how my shower wall looks after I get out. I panicked a little bit when I first started CG because SO much more hair was coming out in the shower - I had to remind myself that that is due to the fact that I'm no longer combing through my dry hair all day long and ripping all those shed strands out. Now they sit in my hair until I comb in the shower and make it look as if I should be bald when I'm done

Day 2 after CO washing. I used the same scrunch technique in the shower to add Tresseme Naturals conditioner to my hair as a leave in. When I got out I scrunched a little with my microfiber towel then diffused until about 75% dry. The results are not very good but again I wasn't using a styling product to hold the curl so I wasn't surprised. (I'm doing this in small steps to find what works best. The next time I wash I'm going to use a styler. I'm still in the experimentation/learning phase.)

As you can see it's frizzy all over the place. I forgot my pick at home so I used my fingers at the root instead. A couple hours later I noticed it had tamed somewhat on it's own.

The last pic is of the coils I love so much. Once upon a time my entire head was made up of those springy curlicues. The saga continues...

Everyone has a mix of textures & porosities. Considering that your hair takes forever to dry, you should scrunch out as much excess water as possible & don't use more than 3 products on your hair at a time. The amount of products can increase drying time too. I have a ton of hair. So I have to apply quite a few palm fills of conditioner but this increases drying time so I cut back. Knowing the type of curls you have will also help better tell you what to use on your hair. Hope this helps.

Woohoo! I found my groove! For the past two days the dew point has been in the sweet spot of 40s and 50s. I decided to try my next experiment.

Low pooed with SheaMoisture Yucca & Baobab Thickening Shampoo and Conditioned with that same line's conditioner. I added the Tresseme Naturals on top of that to truly saturate my hair before finger combing out the loose hairs and tangles. [My hair doesn't tangle much thankfully because I sleep in a satin cap.] I washed out most of the conditioner then scrunched out the extra water. It was still wet but not dripping all over the place. When I scrunched, it still made that squish sound.

Now time to layer my styling products!

I added the Yucca, etc thickening milk by scrunching and raking. Then I added Shea Moisture Curling Enhancing Smoothie, also by raking and scrunching. Then I used Ecostyler with argon oil to seal it all in. I applied about a quarter size to my palm, rubbed hands together and scrunched. It's thick so a little goes a long way. The gel dries pretty fast on my hands so when it did I just added a splash of water and rubbed my hands together again to reactivate the gel.

I tried air drying but my hair was looking so limp and my curls loose. I diffused my hair after it was 50% dry (I'm going to diffuse right away next time) and it looked amazing! Each curl was defined and moisturized. I scrunched but there was no crunch surprisingly. Diffusing took care of that "wet look" that I hate so much.

I'm still not happy with the amount of hair I lose. I noticed hair from all different cycles. Long hair with short new growth.

    Second day hair:

I slept with a night cap and woke up with flattened curls. To reactivate them, I stood over the sink, collected a palm full of water then pressed it to my head over and over until all of my hair was wet again. I think that's the super soak method (??). After I was done, my hair was dripping all over the place. I then scrunched with a microfiber towel. After that I scrunched in a little bit more of the ecostyler gel. Any frizzy pieces were twirled around my finger and skipped like a jump rope to get the curl back. Lastly, I diffused to almost dry. Here are the results before volumizing with my hair pick:

Looking through old pics for inspiration. I regret messing my hair up with the flat iron so much :crybaby: Today I left my hair in the satin cap since it was my day off. I miss having a full head of hair that didn't constantly need a hair pick to keep volume.

You're curls are beautiful! I have been CG for 7 months and I never plan on stopping unless I just add an occasional no poo cleanser. At the start of my natural hair journey I boxed up all my bad hair products and put my heat tools/brushes at the top of an old closet. I am never looking back! Curls are so beautiful and unique and I have finally learned to take care of them and make them look healthy! Good luck on your journey it's not always an easy one but it is so worth it to discover your "buried treasure!"

So today I did the same routine as the last except this time I left in the SM conditioner as a leave-in. My hair clumped nicely while wet which gave me hope. I should say false hope. My curls are defined and not frizzy but there is absolutely no volume. It dried with looking wet and crunchy even though neither is accurate.

Now I know it's either Leave-in OR milk & curling cream :rambo:

Day 2 - Refreshed in the shower with water, 1-2 pumps of TM in palm (added water and rubbed hands together for slip), smoothed TM on canopy and scrunched into the ends. Plopped while getting dressed, diffused for about 10 minutes then air dried the rest.

Result- Still no volume but perfectly defined S curls. Great hold still from ecostyler despite washing some out. It it is a cute look but will take some getting used to.

    So...

Leave-in condish, milk & curling cream and gel = Shiny S curls that stay put (longer length and looser curl)

Milk, curling cream and gel = Springy bouncy curlicues (shrinkage but can be picked out for volume)

    *******************************************************************************************

I'm going to try the most recent routine once again but this time using V05 conditioner as a leave-in and gel only. I predict I'll have perfectly defined shiny springy bouncy spirals

    Journey Update - Experiments

Plopping overnight was a funky mess. I will not be trying that again anytime soon haha :toothy10:

    Today:

Co-wash with V05 Kiwi and Lime Squeeze Clarifying Conditioner.
    • Detangle/Rinse Out with Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab Thickening Conditioner.
    • Quarter size of V05 Kiwi and Lime Squeeze Clarifying Conditioner scrunched in as a leave-in.
    • Flip head upside-down and smooth & scrunch Eco Styler Gel with Argon oil.
    • Plop for about 20 minutes, then air dry.

Simple and easy (but a little time consuming). Day 2 will probably look even better after I refresh curls in the shower and reapply condish and gel.

Here is the end of the day hair:

We've tried SM Curling Smoothie, SM Thickening Milk, Jojoba oil, Coconut oil, and Tresseme as leave-in but nothing worked...

    until trying ALMOND OIL!!!!!!

(Hair blotted with microfiber towel; nickel size amount of oil smoothed, raked, scrunched focusing on the ends; hair in loose braid overnight.)

Her swavy hair is becoming more like loose curls. The almond oil is the only thing that has worked with her frizz. Her hair is still moist in the morning thanks to her super low porosity. Tonight she dried a little with the blow dryer to help it along.

I plan on giving my mother a hair & products makeover next! :blob3:

    Here is my update!

After experimenting with different products and different techniques, I've been able to find a perfect method and have been able to duplicate the results.

Pic 1 - 5th day hair. Kept untouched in a satin bonnet days 2-4. Curls refreshed by steam in the shower. Light spritz with water and v05 mixture on the ends.

Pic 2 - Day 1 After a looooooooooong night of clubbing. No frizz (despite what the photo might look like)

Devacurl no poo'd - trickle rinse and scrunch

Devacurl One Condition - hair flipped and applied upside-down. Gentle rake detangle and scrunch. Baptism rinse.

Ecostyler gel with argan oil generously aplied. Smoothed and scrunched.

Hair scrunched to release water. Second round of scrunching with microfiber towel.

Plopped 30 minutes then diffused another 15. Head upside-down nape first. Left side hair flipped to the right then diffused at the root. Repeat on the right side. Rustled up at the root after dry and shake head left to right.

It left horrible white residue. I think it was the Devacurl One Condition bc I've never had residue with Shea Moisture. Luckily it was less noticeable after drying.

Pic 3 - Hair in a silky wrap overnight and all Satuday when hair not in use lol No more silk bonnet for me! I usually wake up with flat out of shape curls. Not this time!

Pic 4 & 5 - Day 3 and still going strong. The difference? Silk scarf wrap while sleeping as opposed to a silk bonnet. My hair is too short to pineapple. The wrap is the closest thing I can get to it. Also, leaving in almost all of my condition and applying gel to soaking wet hair.
Day 1 of CG method: 10/5/13
3b Corkicelli Normal Porosity. Medium Density, Fine Width, Medium Texture.
SM Y&B TS and Condish as LI. Ecostyler with Argan oil gel to soaking wet hair. Scrunch with microfiber towel. Plop for 30 minutes. Diffuse upside-down. Rustle shake at root when dry.
