Hair is rejecting color??

So I noticed my hair isn't taking the color . I've been red for over a year. I know that red is hard to get rid of without stripping it but my roots are doing it too. My natural hair color is a medium ash blonde with lighter blonde and red tints in it. Also underneath is more a dark brown. I've been wanting to go back brown or to my natural. I've been to professionals past few years and I've done my own hair twice in those times. I've been red before back when I was younger and never had any problems. It's just weird to me lol. I'm so over having red hair. I'm still new to this hair journey and it's been almost a year for me. Could the porosity have changed? Any tips or tricks would help :)
I have 3b high porosity with fine and medium textured hair if you needed that lol.

I don't know what it is, but my natural hair is a similar color and I have colored it red for years on and off. I always end up going back to red because for some reason I never have been able to fully get rid of the red! I'm trying to let it grow out now but it looks odd.
Hair Type: Combo of 2A, 2B and 2C ... with a weird straight underlayer :dontknow:

What type of colourant are you trying to use, semi, demi or permanent? Have you used a dye brand containing silicones followed by a hot flat iron? Or a brand containing henna?

You need to take the red out - use a peroxide free colour remover like Colour B4 or Color Oops. Also run strand tests rather than using your head as a laboratory. If a colour remover doesn't work TBH chances are nothing will shift it.

Your roots might be lower porosity if you have stopped damaging them but your lengths are likely to be much the same unless you have been using a lot of penetrating oils. That should not block a permanent dye from taking but it might a semi.

I always use permanent on my hair. I do test strands. I never looked at the ingredients of the boxed hair dye before. Maybe I should when I can't afford an 80$ service. I won't be using boxed hair dye anymore when I have a sally's here now. Usually I do have my hair straighten after. I barely put heat on my hair as is. Only damage I have is from not moisturizing it enough and from hormonal problems. I have colored my hair 4 times this year. Normally it is twice a year. My only solution for not to wreck it is to grow it out. Which will take up to 3 years to reach shoulder length. The length of my hair now is almost 3 years old except the new growth over time. I did a big chop to ear length in 2011 from having it permanently straighten. It's bra strap length now. I'm just a little conflicted to why it's doing it now or it's just that red is hard to get rid of. Maybe I should try a toner. I've tried the toner shampoo's and conditioners and it doesn't work.

Peroxide free colour removers are not particularly damaging, TBH the average permanent dye is worse. Colour removers do leave hair feeling straw like because the cuticle is raised, but that can be fixed with a deep condition or two. Run strand tests to see if they will work - you may need to do two or three packs to strip most of the red out. I got from dark burgundy to strawberry blonde with these products.

If it does not easily come out one possibility is there was silicone in one of the dyes you used and the high heat of the flat iron has melted that into your hair. If so it's likely not even bleach will shift it unfortunately. Another is you are not trying to remove the red the right way, you can't necessarily cover over red it tends to glow through.
