Should I use protein if I color my hair?

Is it necessary to use protein if you dye your hair?

I use permanent dye in my hair, and I've been using protein treatments because I thought all dyed hair needed it. Recently, I noticed that when I use the protein my hair feels hard, rough, and doesn't take a curl the way I'd like. I realized my hair doesn't like protein.

I suppose the simple answer is if it doesn't work for me, don't use it - but it's confusing because protein is highly recommended for dyed hair. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

I don't remember who said it, but I'll refer to a comment someone on here made recently about protein. Don't do a PT when you think your hair needs it, go by when your hair tells you it needs it. If it's drying your hair out, I would stop. Is there any protein in your daily products? Sometimes that's enough. IMO, I would focus more on hydration after a recent dye, but that's just me and how my hair reacts. You may want to try overnight coconut oil soaks or for a pre-poo.

Coarse hair doesn't tend to do well with hydrolysed protein even if coloured, and anyone can overdo it. We aren't all protein craving or sensitive, IMO it's a spectrum.

Thanks very much for the responses!

Sixe - I'm definitely going to try ab overnight coconut oil soak. I have been thinking about something like that - was considering leaving in conditioner over night - but I like this idea better, since I have read that c. oil gets absorbed well.

Firefox, I only recently realized my hair is coarse. I will check out ingredients in my usual products and see if they have h. protein and how high on the list it is (to determine if there is a lot in the product).

    I appreciate the responses.

How about adding coconut oil to your conditioner?

I will definitely do that, too, since I am planning to wash my hair tonight so I won't have a chance to do the overnight thing right away. Good suggestion and it reminded me that I have to buy the stuff tonight!
