Bleaching Curls

KiraSavannahKiraSavannah Posts: 423Registered Users
Hey! I have curls that are 3b-c, honey blonde / gold. I want to ombre or bleach the back half of my hair .Since my hair is already naturally blonde would I need to leave the bleach on for a little while and would that do less damage than if I had dark brown hair.? And would that be very damaging.? I was wanting to do it now because my ends are about one and a half years old, I want to do it while my ends are new rather than when they're old and weak. Pics posted Below of my actual hair color and what color I want it to be. Sent from my SGH-T999 using CurlTalk App

I'm not sure you need to persulphate bleach at all, a shade or two can be done with a weak peroxide only blonde box dye.

If you have healthy virgin hair and dye over a heavy coconut oiling, damage should be minimal only lifting a shade or two. But always run strand tests on shed plug hole hair.
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
    Experimenting with: benign neglect

Thanks! Do you think it would be better to do it now or when my hair is longer? Does hair age decrease damage, or does it not matter?

Hair gets more damaged as it gets older due to combing, brushing, shampooing, rubbing on fabrics, the elements (known as 'weathering') wearing away the protective cuticle. However colour treated hair is at greater risk of or more vulnerable to weathering, so any lightening done now will accelerate weathering as your hair ages.

There is no ideal time to damage hair with peroxide but it's fun (!) so I would do it whenever suits you. Do spend a few weeks babying your hair with proven ingredients like coconut oil and - if your hair is not coarse - hydrolysed protein treatments. These two are proven to protect from peroxide damage. Always run strand tests and patch tests, don't ever use your head as a laboratory.

Aftercare again coconut oil and hydrolysed protein, also ceramides, 18-MEA and panthenol. Regular deep conditioners may help your hair feel nice but most ingredients will not patch repair or penetrate it's just a cosmetic effect. Also protect your hair religiously from UV light - wear a close weave hat or scarf, UV Buff.

You might consider switching from shea butter which does not penetrate but may block other useful ingredients from contacting the hair to a penetrating oil or butter like palm kernel, babassu, tucuma - these are all rich in lauric acid like coconut oil.

Good products include (use as a leave in so the actives can work/ no waste)
    - Komaza Care Matani repair treatment spray (ceramides, protein, panthenol)
    - Komaza Care Matani leave in conditioner (ceramides, protein, panthenol, natural oils)
    - Scientific Essentials hair conditioner (18-MEA, protein, panthenol)
    - any cheap pure coconut oil.
