Need a product for smoothing dry hair...

Jas76Jas76 Posts: 2,283Registered Users Curl Neophyte
My 2nd day hair has gotten pretty consistent lately. Sometimes I'll get some frizz, mainly from hair rubbing on clothing, etc and getting pulled from its clump.

I have used SM Elixir or GSO to smooth it, and both work well. But sometimes I think I need something thicker. Maybe with light hold. Something... Buttery, maybe? So I can smooth AND reclump the "frayed" section.

I have used LOOB mixed with oil (and sometimes a drop of condish), and that works OK, but tends to have too much hold and leaves my hair feeling dry and crispy (bc it's "over-producted") after it dries.

I have SM soufflé, but that seems too jelly-like. I have SM Smoothie, but that seems too heavy. (Though I have not tried either.)

A friend suggested Boots curl cream, which I've wanted to try anyhow, but I don't know if it would meet that "buttery, light hold" description or have the desired effect.

Maybe I'm way off base with this theory, and I should just stick with the oils! Idk. I'm open to suggestions!

Try the smoothie. Emulsify it. I know a lot of people that like it.

I know you prefer more readily available products, but I swear by Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic for refreshing dry hair. It.Is.Awesome. It's $25 online + shipping, for 18 oz I think....and it will last FOREVER. It's not buttery, per se, it's a fairly clear jelly, but it has clumping magic like I've never experienced on dry hair. It has great slip, and a little goes a long way and NEVER dries crunchy! Even when I scrunch out "too" much crunch when using other products, I just smooth some of it on, and it reclumps them. It really is MAGIC!

I love the smoothie. I have fine thinnish hair, and it doesn't weigh it down. I don't use a lot.

I've used the Boots curl cream, and I didn't find it exciting. It definitely does not have a buttery feel to it. It has a little hold, but I found it a little drying.

Jane Carter Nourish and Shine is nice. I don't think it has really any hold or not much, but it is buttery and smells good. It might mix well with something like a gel or something with hold. :)

Just tried a smidgen of the smoothie, emulsified and mixed with one squirt of the elixir...

So far so good! Since there was no hold, really, I squirted some SM C&H curl and hold spray (which I adore!)

Hoping this reactivated some product for the hold portion of thing.

Like I said - good so far! We'll see how it holds up through rehearsal tonight! Lol!

Still willing to try other stuff, so more suggestions are welcome!!

    Thanks!!

I use the SM milk. Very similar to the smoothie, but a lot looser. I actually keep a bit in my purse at all times in case I need to smooth frizz or reclump stragglers!

Pattern Pusha works pretty well for me, though is not at all a buttery, oily product.

Hmm... I didn't even think about the milk!

So it's like the smoothie but thinner, yes? Is it actual "milk consistency"? Or a little thicker? I don't know if I want something that gets my hair too "wet", you know? Water refreshing of any kind has typically been an epic failure for me.

I like the Softee aloe Vera curl activating gel. Very moisturizing & doesn't dry crunchy. I use it with my leave in & oil.

I use the SM Milk, too, although I usually just put some on at night before I put on my silk cap, and that seems to calm things down overnight. It's been a while since I had any of the smoothie, but the milk is light and very slippy. Sometimes if I want even more slippiness, I add a drop or two of camellia oil, but generally it's just the milk. I've tried a ton of different things, and I always go back to the milk.

Thanks! I'll probably give the milk a try first, since I know my hair likes SM stuff.

It's thinner, but not 'wet' if you know what I mean. It's more like a heavy cream than a milk. My hair does horribly with water, too - frizz city! BTW, I just tried your method of mixing a little loob with a drop of oil this morning and got fantastic second day hair (at least for me:))! Thanks for the tip!ImageUploadedByCurlTalk1377916566.845829.jpgImageUploadedByCurlTalk1377916581.930457.jpgImageUploadedByCurlTalk1377916593.093144.jpg

Oh yay!! I'm so glad that helped!! :)
It works for me sometimes, too. As long as my hair is nice and moisturized it usually works ok. I'll probably keep trying that! Hey! Maybe I'll mix a little milk in with the LOOB and oil and see how that goes!!
