I have no idea what to do with my hair!

Hello, I just made my account and this is my first post! I've been reading about styling wavy and curly hair for a while, but I've never gotten around to actually doing it. I've decided that it's time that I deal with the disaster on my head.

I have no idea how to take care of my hair. I'm not one of those people who grew up thinking they had straight hair, but I've never made much effort to work with my natural texture. I used to straighten/curl my hair, and lately I've been letting it do what it wants, which usually results in frizzy, out-of-control, stringy waves. I'm sure you can imagine how many "do something with your hair" comments I've gotten. :)

I use heat very rarely and I recently cut off my damaged ends, so I think my hair is fairly healthy. I think I have medium density and width and normal porosity. I have no idea about porosity. My hair tends to be frizzy and easily weighed down, and it can become very stringy by the end of the day.

On one side of my hair, I get lots of waves with quite a few spirals/ringlets. The other side of my hair is noticeably straighter. That side has only waves, no curls, with a few straighter pieces. I also have a straight-ish underlayer, so it seems that I have multiple curl types on my head. Ideally, I'd like my whole head to look like the curliest side, but I know that probably won't happen.

I really don't know how to go about this. I've gone off sulphates/silicones in the past and I plan on doing it again very soon, but I don't know about anything else. What products would you recommend? What techniques? How do I know if I need protein? Any advice at all would be appreciated because I have no idea what I'm doing. Hair really isn't my area of expertise!

I attached a few pictures of my hair (I think- I'm not entirely sure they attached). Sorry they're bad quality- I took them at night with an iphone camera. This is my naked hair, after using regular sulphate/silicone shampoo and conditioner, although the waves are a bit out of place since two different people ran their fingers through it before I could stop them...

    Have you tried plopping? I have to say if all the CG things I've tried over the last week that I've been here (though I've been Sulfate and silicone free for a lot longer) plopping has made the difference. I also have wavy hair with some random curls and random straight pieces. Here us my current routine:
    -Co-wash, squeeze out extra water
    -Finger comb curl keeper and recoil through my hair and then scrunch upside down.
    -plop with a microfibres towel or top. (Search plop to learn how)
    -do make up and get dressed
    -let my hair down and allow it to air dry
    -scrunch out the crunch gently.

    Knowing your properties (if your hair is fine vs coarse, density, porosity) will help you a lot in trying to figure out what to do.


    Go to this link and it will help you answer some of those questions. Don't bother with the float test for porosity, though.

    If it does turn out you need more protein, that might help with your different textures. I've only been CG for about six weeks and I do have different wave patterns and textures all over but protein has helped me a lot in making those disparities less awkward looking. I think it's just how my pattern is though and I don't think it will ever even out.

    To me it just looks like the curl starts higher on one side. And in actually quite like that. First is just work at getting it healthy and responsive.

    You definitely need to know your hair properties and dew points/ humidity. Then clarify (remove product build up), maybe chelate (mineral build up) your hair.

    Many of us have different curl patterns on different parts of the head. For me part of the issue is the finest (nape esp.) parts drying out way faster than the medium hair, also discovering the back of my hair especially likes protein (a curl booster and film former), and realising I always styled one side of my hair way before the other. My curl pattern is definitely more even now, tho still not the same all over.
    2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

    CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
    Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
    Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
    Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
    Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
    Experimenting with: benign neglect
