Hair getting stripped from low poo, but gets too oily without it?

Yes tp cukes is drying my hair out with daily use to every other day.. But tresemme naturals, VO5, and suave naturals were horrible on my hair, and im not sure if cowashing would b a good idea with fine easily weighed down hair. Any suggestions? :(

I would try a less harsh low-poo, possibly one without coco-betaine provided you're not using silicones. I haven't tried that many, but one that comes to mind is Shea Moisture.

You can always dilute the low poo with water.

Are you using a the newer Yes to Cucumbers?

I had to go through a few low poos before I found one gentle enough and I still wouldn't use it daily. You need to find the right conditioner for you hair that don't build up so quickly. I shampoo mostly because my hair is dirty, not to remove product.

I had a similar issue. I have to wash daily. I live in a very hot climate and (TMI) my scalp feels sweaty and nasty if I don't. The combination of heat and the weight of my hair making washing daily non-negotiable.

Even with gentler low poos, my hair was drying out. The Shea Moisture Curl and Shine one and Amika Color pHerfection were probably the least drying but were still a little bit much for daily use. Cowashing weighs my hair down.

I just switched to a cleansing conditioner (DevaCurl No-Poo) to see if that would be a happy medium. It has cocomidapropyl betaine low on the ingredient list so I'm hoping that will gently cleanse without stripping. I'd also like to try the CJ and Jessicurl ones. The L'Oreal EverCurl one was nice but I hate the smell.
2A/B. Mix of fine, medium, and coarse (mostly medium). Dense. Mix of normal and high porosity.

I really like the Elucence moisture benefits shampoo. My hair is fine and thin and it is amazing for my hair.

Trying to find a milder low poo is always an option. Try shea moisture or, my personal favorite, devacurl low poo. My hair always feels moisturized when i use it.

Another option is to try adding some lemon juice to a light co-wash conditioner. It helps to clarify the hair, but the conditioner will help prevent over drying. I usually don't co-wash either because my scalp tends to be on the oily side, but one day i tried a mix of conditioner, sugar for exfoliating, and lemon juice with the full intention of low pooing afterwards, but I didn't have to! Give this a try first because the ingredients are cheap and easy to get if you don't have them on hand!

I found the SM poos to be the gentlest of all the ones I've tried (and I've tried a few) BUT the shea butter in them isn't a good option for lower porosity hair; can build up.

YesToCucumbers is one of the friendlier ones I've tried... I don't think it's stripping at all but do not shampoo daily. I agree with Chupie, try diluting it. I think the CG handbook suggests 1/2 tsp of shampoo per wash. I have difficulty spreading 1/2 tsp of shampoo so use more but I concentrate the shampooing on the scalp (don't shampoo the lengths) and just let the suds run down the lengths as I'm rinsing, which cleanses enough for the length. I actually used to do this pre-CG as well.

Diluting might be a good option for you... try using 1/2 tsp diluted in water and concentrate that on your scalp.

Other options are going for a cleansing conditioner like CJ Daily Fix. I haven't tried it but have been seeing only very good reviews. It should cleanse more than V05 etc. but be less drying than a low-poo.

You can also try putting some conditioner in your water/YTC mix... so essentially mix your own cleansing conditioner.

OH yes, good point. Check the ingredients of your bottle. The older formulation of YesToCucumbers has sulfates; the newer one doesn't. I have and like the newer one.

Thanks, sure enough i skipped shampooing today bc its always so dry and rough all througout, and i thought it was the conditioner, but it was the shampoo making my hair break and get rough and dry! It was easy to brush this time and felt softer, although i still need to figure out my shampoo balance. I will try diluting it first, then if that dont work i will be switching to either sm or devacurl low poo. I ordered As I Am coconut conditioner (its either cleansing or for cowash, i dont remember but its supposed to be light which i want bc my hair is easily weighed down). I HAVE ONE MORE SILLY QUESTION, THOUGH! I think i may have my porosity wrong, things build up on my hair, yet gel seems to be absorbed, and i do color my hair every three to four months, but is there a chance that im NOT high porosity? It just seems like coconut oil may not be working (still trying to figure this out bc my hair likes coconut in products but im not so sure about.pure coconut oil treatments over night) and that protein isnt working for my hair, so how can i really determine porosity?

Look at my hair!! :) this was NO POO, RO of giovanni SaS, and fsg with coconut oil as a sealer! This just completely encouraged me to stick with cg!! :)

I diluted the shampoo today, and did everything else the same, but got weighed down oily roots again! :( does it matter WHEN you apply coconut oil for a seal? I used it to SOTC yesterday from my gel when it was dry, but today, i applied the coconut oil to my hair first when wet then put fsg on top and air dried. I had no crunch, but is that what caused the oilyness? Or was it because i diluted the yes to cukes shampoo?

    Couple thoughts

    1) be sure your y2cukes doesn't have any sulphates.

2.) try to co-wash two days, then low poo, then co-wash two days, etc.

    3) when you co-wash, be sure you are using enough, and that you are thoroughly scrubbing your scalp, and that you rinse completely before applying your RO.

    4) you can alternate low poos. Use the y2cukes one low poo, then the next use the SM low poo. (Still co-washing in between.)

    5) when using your Y2Cukes, only apply it at the roots. Also, you can try applying some condish and/or oil (I prefer coconut, usually) to the bottom half of your hair (so the ends and halfway up the shaft).

The conditioner can be any cheap drugstore conditioner. Just slightly dampen the ends and coat with the oil or conditioner. (Sometimes I even do it on dry hair). Wait about 10 mins and then low poo. This will cleanse your scalp but protect the more delicate ends.

    No sulfates in my ytc!

2.) try to co-wash two days, then low poo, then co-wash two days, etc.

The problem with this, is that i have tried suave coconut, tresemme naturals aloe, and Vo5 and they weighed my hair down even more at my roots, no matter how long i scrubbed my scalp! I did have sucess once with just water wash and giovanni sas as the rinseout, but the style only lasted about three hrs and got horrid.

    5) when using your Y2Cukes, only apply it at the roots. Also, you can try applying some condish and/or oil (I prefer coconut, usually) to the bottom half of your hair (so the ends and halfway up the shaft).

I only apply it to my roots, and do u mean as a leave in?

So apply before i lowpoo, then no rinse out?

Sorry! To clarify, I meant to say that when you are low pooing with the Y2Cukes (or any low poo) put it just at your roots!

For the pre-poo method, put the condish in (you can do a search for "spritz and condish" and "pre-poo", and "condition wash condition method" and that will give you even more detains.)

You leave the pre-poo in, low poo the roots, then rinse all that out. Then you use a RO, tho you may be able to leave off the RO step, idk.

Oil and water don't mix. You probably had oil sitting on your hair. Lack of crunch could definitely be due to a film of oil. I never use straight oil on my hair. I mix coconut oil into my DT and PT, Maybe you shouldn't put oil on your roots at all.

I put a few drops of argan oil in my FSG when I make it. That seems to work better for me than coconut and it absorbs into my hair nicely.

I dont tpuch my roots, but yes, im thinking it could be the oil.... Im going to use more shampoo than a dime size amount, skip the oil, and i may have to pick up some of that! If this dont work, im going to be going back to herbwl essences hello hydration or garnier sleek and shine
