Too Much Spam!

Does anyone keep an eye on the amount of spam and junk threads and posts around here or are you relying on us to "flag as inappropriate"?

Some days there are junk threads that get posted in wee hours of the morning and it will be around 8:00pm my time and those junk threads are still there.

If it were as simple as hitting the "report" button I would do it but I don't want to have to type why I think their post doesn't belong on a hair forum.

Can't say for sure, but I think the mods try to keep an eye on those, and I know reports go directly to them. As far as reporting spammy threads, I don't bother with a long explanation of why it doesn't belong, just simply link the thread(s) and say "This is spam", or if it's one user posting several spammy threads, I just quote the username /threads and say "This is likely a spammer". From there, it's up to the mods to make a final decision.

    I report them — they're annoying.

The amount of spam has increased over the past few weeks and it has been discussed with the tech team. They are working to resolve it. In the meantime, please continue to send the spam reports. We will remove it as soon as we can.

Any posts that may seem suspect, please report those well, with a brief explanation, and we will take a look at them and determine if they are of the "spammy" type.

Thank you for patience and understanding.

Guide 63, I'm not sure which version of vBulletin the boards are using, but the last few versions of the software have a function built into it that makes all new member posts moderated. This feature will put the posts into a queue in the moderators panel that then have to be reviewed and approved before hitting the main boards. (The new member will see a message that their post is pending approval.) If it's a spam post, you will be able to delete and ban the spammer right away. If it's a legitimate post, you will be able to approve and release the member from moderation right away as well.

It might be worth discussing with the Tech Team to see if this is available to use.

Updates: the current database issue that's making the site crash or run really slow is an emergency task for the tech team. Up next behind that issue is updating the software that runs CurlTalk and the CurlyNikki forum, as I'm pretty positive that will resolve a bunch of issues and even address requests people have proposed (like tagging usernames in your post like Facebook does now, etc etc)

not just moderation of all new members, didn't we used to have a delay of a few days before they could post?

maybe reinstating that would stop the spammers?

every day the movie pirates are all over the place trying to get us to bite.... :sad5:

Try being the ones having delete those pesky spam posts and more are posted before you can even close out your browser. We are turning into Inspector Dreyfuss. :cussing::cussing::cussing:

Not sure if it's possible, but if it would let you set it up so that say 5 people report a post, it gets deleted, or blocked or something might help?

Curly Canadian, my understanding is the techs have their hands full with trying to resolve the web issues. The update needed to thwart the flow of spam is up next. Until it gets done, the mods will continue to make like Inspector Dreyfus after Detective Clouseau in regards to the spam.:rambo:

    Great suggestion though!:thumbright:
