Coils forming into balls at hair end

Hi, does anyone have similar experiences? My last professional trim was 6 wks ago and yet I still have this problem. I look at other 4b/c styling videos and their ends seem to stay detangled or at least somewhat smoothed out. My coils are literally the size of coffee stirrers, so maybe that may be a factor..? My hair is always washed in sections, detangled and put in wet twists. I even got a denman brush to help tease out the tight coils at the ends. But then after it dries, I can't manipulate my hair because I get snapping and popping at the ends. Can't retain length this way!!! Help please!

Well I guess you are talking about fairy knots. If you are talking about fairy knots it comes with being natural. I get them all the time no matter what kind of products I use or instrument to detangle my hair. About the breaking and snapping of your hair you need to look at the products you are using. Also, maybe you need to change your routine as well.

I think I used to get what you're talking about. It's like the coils get smaller and tighter until they form a lil balls. I try to smooth products down the hair using the praying hands method and not scrunch the ends. You may want to braid your ends instead of twisting them or fold them over like Terri Laflesh does hers. That way your ends are free to coil and tangle. Also, you may want moisturize more often and seal in that goodness so that your hair doesn't pop and snap when dry. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Yes, this is exactly what l mean- the coils compact tightly at the ends, even with regular trims and all. I even have a hard time with curlformers cos the ends get all tangly. I'll try braiding the ends. I've been searching Youtube for naturals with coils the size of mine (they are literally as small as coffee stirrers!!). Haven't been too successful.....

Just out of curiosity what does your hair look like? Do you have a picture? My coils are small and I am in the process of making more videos on YouTube....

Now that my hair is longer I'm having a terrible time with these single strand knots (ssk's) as well. I keep a pair of scissors close by when I'm detangling so that I don't rip them out :( Frustrating!

How do you detangle your hair? I put my fro oil in my hair before I start to detangle my hair. This help buffer my hair & keep the strands from rubbing against each other. Then with my denman brush, I start with my ends to get the knots & work my way to the roots. Very little snaps if I do this.

I always detangle starting from ends, with loads of slippy conditioner (trader joe's). I always dry in twists, it's never free-form. I believe it's due to the teeny diameter of the coil, the wide-tooth comb can't really tease out each coil and I'm hesitant about using a denman. Maybe I should think about really using it more often, but I' m concerned about possible increased wear and tear at the ends leading to splits. I'm quite prone to those.

My ends get frizzy and kind of stick together when I take down my twists. I found a video on YouTube where she twists her hair then bantu knots the ends only. I tried it and it helps me in keeping my ends smooth so they don't tangle as much. Here's the video:

Hey girl dont fret I had this problem BAD! when I was newly natural for like 3-4 months. The coiled balls used be so bad I was just ripping them out of my hair!

But it does get better. Try using small perm rods on the ends of your hair so our ends have curl to them but still big enough as to not tangle. You can pin your twist up(similar to Naptural85's way of stretching her hair) but more bobby pins to secure your hair and closer to your ends. Or I have even tried Ciprians's way of m&S your heads and wrapping them in between a bobby pin which was helpful but still be cautious with all these esp. the last 2. Another Solution could be to African Thread Your Twist!

I do this when I need moderate stretch but am to lazy to really thread my hair. I hope this helped!

Try smoothing each curl. It's tedious but it helped keep my ends from knotting up.
