How to get ride of build up?

ultracurlzultracurlz Registered Users Posts: 213 Curl Neophyte
I have a problem with my conditioners building up and giving me dandruff, but if I wash my hair too often it's going to dry out. It was the same way when I used a no poo cleanser. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me.

Please and thank you.
3C/4A mix (Seriously it's all over the place)
Hair is kinda fine and kinda thick.
Super short, I'd like definition but styling products don't like me

Are you CG? What is too often for you as far as shampoo? Im once a week. Also I find some non sulfate shampoos don't do a good enough job of getting my hair clean so I get build up quicker. I have noticed gels with pvp build up quickly on me too.
. Sometimes for cowashes I will mix a cleansing conditioner with some conditioner. This gets my hair cleaner than just conditioner but doesnt get as dry as using cleansing conditioner.
Yes, it's real. No, you can't touch it. :wav:

The cleansing conditioner didn't make my hair dry, but it didn't get rid of build up. It's really hard for me to say how often is too often. It depends on when I feel l need it. If I use hair lotion it builds up faster than when I don't. I don't use it all that often because of that but my hair had been really dry lately so I had to. I want to try other kinds of cleansers but I usually can't find the locally and buying online is kinda expensive.

The stuff I'm using now is

Herbal Essences Hello Hydration as a conditioner

Olive Oil (it has a really long name) Shampoo

The same brand of hair lotion

This leave in I found that's nearly gone- I don't use much of it and I keep it mostly away from my roots.

If you don't want to go full out shampoo, maybe you could use a little bit of shampoo diluted in water. Castile soap (also diluted in water) is not very harsh at all. Be sure to dilute it though or it will strip your hair.

Another thing you could try it Apple Cider Vinegar rinses. They can help with buildup.

I have resigned myself to use the sulfate loaded clarifying shampoos to get rid of buildup despite the ultra dry/Brillo like effects. Lol. But trick is to do that no more than once or twice per month; and to use deep conditioner after use. To combat dryness and dandruff, I also recommend prepoo wih Extra Virgin Coconut oil. I do this on dry hair at night with a shower cap. In the morning I rinse it with warm water and then proceed with the clarifying shampoo or whatever shampoo or cleansing conditioner you are using at that time.

Have you ever tried a brown sugar scrub? Just add some brown sugar and lightly mix it with your cowash in a little bowl and scrub, scrub away. Don't mix it for too long or way ahead of time as the brown sugar dissolves rather quickly.

This has really been helping me with my itchies and build up. I've also invested in a scalp brush from amazon for about $2.99 because my hands get too sore from messaging my scalp.

    Good luck!

Dandruff is a lay term for flakes or particles of skin sometimes accompanied by itching or sebum coating the scalp, it is not product build up.

Have you had this issue formally diagnosed? If you have a scalp complaint none of the usual cosmetic products are likely to work, there are Curly Girl friendly remedies but you need a firm diagnosis before you settle on an effective treatment.

How much olive oil or other oils rich in the fatty acid oleic acid are you using? Oleic acid is a known irritant in susceptible individuals, it can trigger or worsen dermatitis.

I'm a Curly Girl and to clarify I use the Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse. 2 parts warm water & 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar. I section my hair and pour it over and through each section. I then massage it into my scalp. I do this while in the shower under cool running water.

I love this because it is very conditioning for the hair and scalp and it cleanses your scalp and hair without drying it out!

Does Hello Hydration contain a cone? Maybe that is an issue? Also, maybe try lighter product application. Or if you need to shampoo more often, put the shampoo into an applicator bottle and focus on scalp? ACV rinses are good, too.

I was hoping no one would bring that up, but I know it's build up and not dandruff, I just chose to call it that since most people I know wouldn't call it build up.

I don't know what no cone things I can buy in bulk for cheap. If anyone else does know I would love you forever if you could tell me XD It needs a lot of slip cause I use it to detangle and my hair likes to knot.

When I think my hair has build-up/dullness, I try a low poo product. When that doesn't work, I do a vinegar rinse. Did one this weekend and it seemed to help.
