My Journey with the CJ Method

I'm a 2A-2B wavy girl with high density, normal thickness, and questionable porosity (soaks up water fast, dries slow, squeaks) who is trying the CG method for the first time! I actually started 3 days ago and I thought that it might be helpful for myself, as well as others, to document what I'm trying and how my experience and results with CG are.

Currently my products are the Shea Moisture Moisture Retention Shampoo and GVP Conditioning Balm for my RO and DT. I was using the Devacurl AnGel but I didn't really like it and felt like I had to use a ton for my hair (which is mid-back length). Because of that, I returned it today and got a few other products to replace it. Specifically, I bought the KCCC for a gel and the Shea Moisture Smoothie.

As far as methods go, it's been trial and error so far. I started off by following the method step-by-step from the Curly Girl book (the section for wavy hair). Next, I tried the Icequeen method, which is pretty similar to the "official" CG except for the upside down/cold water and did experience larger clumps, but they were less defined. I'm hoping that my change in styling products and my purchase of a hairdryer/diffuser will remedy this!

Right now, I'm deep-conditioning my hair, using a fine toothed comb because I've found that it promotes clumping for me more than finger combing. After, I am going to rise my hair in cold water for shine, scrunch in the SM Smoothie, then t-shirt scrunch in KCCC and diffuse 80%. Will let you all know the results!

I'll go ahead and post before pictures and some more recent pictures. It's only been a few days, but I can definitely feel a difference. My scalp does feel more oily, but I believe it's largely due to overproduction of oils now that I'm not using harsh shampoos/transitioning in general.

Any tips/corrections on my method would be helpful to, so your opinions are more than welcome. Hope that CG will enhance my naturally wavy hair to its fullest potential.

Thought I would start out with some photographic context...
(1-2) Hair after I got it colored and blown out
(3-4) Hair if I just let it do its thing/brushed it out (taken within the lat 2 months)
    (5) Wet hair (with gel in)

And finally, two pictures of my hair dry, after SOTC from picture 5.

If my hair could look like this every time I SOTC, I would be happy wearing it wavy almost all the time (maybe sometimes blowing it out because I really like how it looks when I do so...). My main challenge now is going to be consistency and figuring out which method works best every time. Also on how to dry overnight or something because it takes AGES for my hair to dry. Yesterday it took my hair almost 5 hours, or more, to dry. Probably because I put in KCCC when my hair was drenched...Not making that mistake again.

Also hoping my curl pattern might become a little less...erratic. Tips and suggestions are welcome!

Do you diffuse your hair? That would seriously speed up the drying time :)
My hair looks really similar to yours, I get what you mean about the high porosity/low porosity thing. Lots of people say that the floating test is flawed, so that probably isn't that accurate, but I really don't know sorry!! Please tell me if you find out an answer haha

Yes, I bought a diffuser when I bought my KCCC and SMMS! Really do like that it cuts down on air drying time. I still have to be careful with applying the KCCC though because when I applied a larger amount on sopping wet hair it took 5 hours even though I diffused (albeit not for a long time).

The porosity thing really is confusing, isn't it? Haha, yeah I've given up on home tests since they've all been pretty much debunked. Instead, I'm going to give a protein treatment a go and see how that turns out. If it makes my hair feel like straw, there's a good chance I'm low porosity. High porosity hair is supposed to react well to protein treatments.

Good luck with the protein treatment!! What one do you plan to use??
A while ago I did a protein treatment, and I had a really good hairday, but my hairs changed lots sine then. (I just realised that was almost a year ago :O time flies! I need to do another one lol)
Keep us posted on how it goes!! :)

I ended up using IAgirl's homemade gelatin treatment last night. I didn't notice a huge difference in my hair, to be honest, but nothing bad happened either.

After doing the treatment, I thought it would be good to try to let my hair dry overnight. I used my SM Smoothie and KCCC to style and dried part-way with my diffuser. Figuring out how to go to sleep was a struggle though. I tried plopping...couldn't finagle my hair into a shirt as it's too long to be in a shirt configuration overnight without falling out. Looks like I'll need to get a mens long sleeve or microfiber towel for the future. Instead I pineappled. However, this didn't work out well. My clumps all fell apart while I was sleeping and I woke up with too-small sections of unflattering waves. Also some of my hair was still really crunchy from the gelatin that I hadn't completely managed to wash out.

I wasn't about to go out like that and decided to take a morning shower. Went through my routine as usual and my waves were good for the rest of the day. Again, I didn't see a huge difference before vs. after using the treatment. My hair felt soft and in good condition, but it had before the treatment as well. Attached are a couple of pictures from today. I received quite a few compliments, but I can never be sure if it's because of my hair color or my hair itself (usually ends up being about the ombre...).

I'm thinking of getting a hair analysis from Gooseprints on etsy. It might be nice to know some in-depth info on my hair and have a little more luck than pure trial and error allows.

So if you pineapple over night can you just spritz it in the Mir inf and scrunch the clumps back in? Pineapple doesn't preserve mine much but allows good sprint sing recovery and then therefore quick dry time because its not wet wet.

I could try it again. I did attempt to spritz it/re-wet it, but the clumps were so far gone, I couldn't really see them reforming unless I got my head soaking wet again. My waves were around a third of an inch wide each, not super well defined either, and kind of frizzy....But I'll have to set aside a weekend day to experiment and see if it works when I consciously give it a try.

No bad reaction to the protein is a good thing. Many people don't get instant gratification from protein treatments they need to stick with it or do the treatment in a different way.
