2c-3a hair with a few questions! PLZ HELP!

LovemybabyLovemybaby Registered Users Posts: 234
Okay.. I am having problems. I use KCKT as leave in, and SM milk for a curl cream. It hydrates and softens my curls, but i dont get hold and i need hold. I have ecostyler olive gel, but that alone or with KCKT, it seems to give hold, but dries or frizzes out my hair.. Do i need leave in, curl cream, AND gel? What am i doing wrong? Also, i find that i have a curl resistant area around the bottom of my ears (mid shaft) that just flys out amd is uncontrollable, while the bottom curls mostly curl together way easier. I use SM moisture retention shampoo, and im trying to figure out the right balance of conditioner, im experimentjng with Tresemme Naturals and the conditioning balm from matrix/biolage. I also csnt get my hair to do good on the second day. Plz help!

Welcome! What are your hair properties (see the Live Curly Live Free site) and dew points/ humidity? Use these to choose ingredients and products.

Kinky Curly Knot Today is not a true conditioner since it does not contain any oils and few fatty alcohols or cationic surfactants, it's more of a detangler. The conditioning balm also contains more humectants (glycerin/ propylene glycol) than conditioning agents, it won't suit all hair types or all weathers. How does the Tresemme Naturals work out as a leave in conditioner? Use loads if you need it.

Fine hair width, and on density, i cant see my scalp unless i look at the point of the part, and the top of the back of my head i seem to have a scalp spot i can see, so its either a medium or high density

Do download the 'Curls on the Go' app so you can check the dews/ humidity easily.

With high porosity and high dews you will likely do well to limit or avoid the more potent humectants - glycerin, honey, propylene glycol, maybe aloe vera. These can draw too much water to the hair which makes hair swell and causes frizz.
The Curl Whisperer on Porosity | Curly Nikki | Natural Hair Styles and Natural Hair Care

Overnight coconut oil soaks on dry hair will help reduce porosity and increase elasticity, so hopefully reduce frizz with regular use. Washing out the excess with conditioner is usually easier and gentler than shampoo. Any residue acts as an anti humectant or sealer, so helps block out excess water entering from humid air.
Mineral Oil Versus Coconut Oil: Which is better?

Fine or porous hair usually does well with hydrolysed protein. You can do treatments or use it within a leave in conditioner. You might also do well with products containing panthenol, it can also help reduce porosity, balance moisture levels, give shine and softness. Panthenol and protein are weak humectants when used in moderation and in a balanced routine, you should be fine in high dews if you start easy and work your way up.

When you try protein again, try to make sure the product does not contain glycerin or aloe, as I've seen some people mistake issues with one or both of these ingredients as protein sensitivity. It's not impossible for fine hair to be protein sensitive, but it is fairly uncommon.

Also, is that the reason tresemme naturals seems to dry my hair out? Best drugstore conditioner for my hair type? And where can i get coconut oil? :)

You should be able to find coconut oil in most grocery stores (might be in the health food section). Firefox is more knowledgeable about ingredient ins and outs than I am, so I defer in that area. Unfortunately I'm also not much help with glycerin-free because my hair is very agreeable with most ingredients in most climates. But I have seen some people react to glycerin in a similar way that many people react to too much protein. It can be tricky to narrow down sometimes because different people's hair can react differently to products. For example, I know of several ladies who get overly soft, limp/straight hair if they use too much protein, rather than the dry straw feeling so many describe.

Protein can do if overused, not rinsed out properly or allowed to build up, that is why it is important to use it in moderation within a balanced routine, like many ingredients. There are different ways to use protein, which I've mentioned in your thread on the protein craving board. I forgot to say on there my hair does not really like protein with potent humectants like glycerin and propylene glycol, it does like it balanced with a little oil but YMMV,

I suggested "limit or avoid the more potent humectants - glycerin, honey, propylene glycol, maybe aloe vera" not avoid all humectants. Proteins, cationic surfactants and fatty alcohols all act as weak humectants anyway, so you would still be using some.

Some people end up with a selection of products labelled 'moisturising' that are all heavy on humectants, that is not a balanced routine. Some cannot use any glycerin but are fine with aloe vera which is weaker certainly if it's not too high in the ingredients list. Or they can use a potent humectant in one product but not in more than that.

You have to experiment but try to use logic within your experiments - so have a basic understanding of ingredient families, dew points and your hair properties. You are well on the way to that!

Mt problem, is the curls on the go app will not work at my house. It loads in town, but not at home, so im not really fullly aware of the dew points. I live in southeast missouri, and it gets 80-100 daily in the summer.. Ik we live in a very humid climate, so im sure the dews are high

Will the Frizz Forecast on the main NC site work for you? As long as you know roughly that will be fine.

Lol high humidity for five day forecast from 68-80%, and dew around 70%! Yikes. Supposed to avoid glycerin, use jellies and pomades. Is KCCC considered a jellie?

Try using aloe vera gel for hold that's what I do. If you don't like that you can make your own flaxseed gel super cheap it also works great!
