Hello, my name is Ashley, I am 28 years old, married, and have two kids. I am here on this site to work on improving my coarse, thick, curly hair. I've been reading about the CG method and although I rarely use shampoo I went ahead and tossed all of my sulfate and silicone containing products and I've quit straightening my hair so I can grow it long and healthy. Wish me luck!

Thank you, 28 years of dealing with this mess on my head and each time I find something I think is working I wind up doing more damage. I was addicted to this redken deep conditioning mask for a while becuase it made my hair feel sooooo nice. Little did I realize the protein was making my split ends 10x worse! My hair is so brittle it did not need that much protein. Then all that salon stuff being loaded with silicones didn't help either. Still trying to figure out what my hair needs.

Welcome! Do work out your hair properties (see the Live Curly Live Free site) and consider your dew points/ humidity (Curls on the Go smartphone app or Frizz Forecast on the main NC site).

Split ends do need trimming off, that hair cannot be salvaged and damaged hair will catch on healthy hair higher up damaging that too. Beneficial ingredients for damaged hair include coconut oil, ceramides and panthenol; coarse hair tends not to do well with much protein.
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
    Experimenting with: benign neglect

Thanks Firefox, I've been reading all about the different hair typed and honestly my hair doesn't really fit into any of the categories. Its all pretty confusing becuase some of the descriptions of the curl types don't match the description of the texture of my hair. Like overall my hair looks 3A but the 2C and 3B textures more accurately describe my hair texture.

My mom was a curly redhead, I have dark brown almost black hair like one of her sisters but the texture is just like my mom's. It is very thick and dense, very coarse and dry I think. My skin is oily and acne prone which I think needs to have some bearing on hair type? But my scalp is usually pretty healthy with the occasional menstrual related pimple.

Curls range from 3B at the nape to 3A and2C towards the top. I wish the top would curl half as good as the under layers. Makes it really weird when I wear my hair down.

I do get it trimmed regularly to remove split ends and my last appointment the girl said she thought my hair was healthy and that she could tell I take good care of it. But it still gets dry and frizzy and developes split ends easily.

Oh yeah and I live in Florida so pretty humid most if the time. A little dry in the winter sometimes which is when I used to wear my hair straight but I won't be straightening it anmore.

Thanks I will take any advice anyone can offer.

I checked out that live curly live free site, thank you! I don't plan on paying for a hair analysis but from reading the info it seems I have coarse hair with high porosity. I guess I pretty much knew that but the site definitely made me feel better about not fitting into a curl category of 2s or 3s or A B C.... lol.

It also makes sense as to why when I tried to perm the top of my hair (years ago) in order to try to get it to curl the same as the top, it didn't take. My hair is pretty resistant to styling and does what it wants so I guess ill just have to work with it. It also reinforces my notion to grow it out long becuase short hair requires more styling and thus more damage. When my hair was longer it was much easier to maintain.
