My body hates me

heyshortyheyheyshortyhey Posts: 21Registered Users
Long story short:

Dentist had been drilling away at, and putting a temporary filling in my back molar for a year, maybe more. Said there was still "plenty of tooth left for a crown," but at the time I couldn't afford it. Finally I decided I just wanted it pulled. I had a root canal done so it didn't hurt or anything, but the filling would crack and food would get in. I started to get really bad breath. I asked her to pull it, she said she wasn't comfortable pulling teeth.

Fast forward to a couple days ago. Got it pulled. Put on antibiotics. They say the antibiotic I'm on has been known to cause yeast infections -- awesome. Problem is, I have BV that I self treat with a water/peroxide douche after my period, if I need it. I'm worried that doing that right now might be too much for my body to handle? At the same time, it's just my schedule. I feel dirty without it.

Should I hold off until all these antibiotics are used up?

    Wow, i feel for you.

Why aren't you on medication for the BV? Do you have insurance?

I'm the type of person that calls the dr whenever i have questions. I would call the gynecologist and speak to a dr or nurse. Tell them you're exact situation and see what they recommend.

I did a little research on BV and it says douching can cause BV as well as smoking, but that'd besides the point. Maybe your self treatment is causing it to linger rather than go away? If you don't have insurance i understand why you would try self treatment.

But i recommend calling the Dr.

    Good luck!

What would be the potential problem? You're on antibiotics, on your period and have BV... Do you have a YI too for sure?

antiobiotics are known to cause YI. That's very common. When I go on antibiotics, I do one of three things

    1) ask my doctor for something to treat it. Again, it so common they have something they can prescribe

    2) take my probiotics. For me, it helps to combat at YI

    3) take Candex. its'a a vitamin that helps kill the bateria that causes YI

Douching is known to eradicate the good and well as the bad bacteria, so it may be exacerbating the BV. Best thing to do there is to stop douching.

Also, any antibiotic can cause a yeast infection, so you will need a prescription to treat that as well or you can take a probiotic as a preventative measure.

ETA: take the meds for the BV first, then treat any YI that surfaces after you finish the BV medication. Otherwise those issues won't clear up.

Don't stop taking the antibiotic. You could get a very serious infection from your teeth - even affecting your heart. That is why you were given antibiotics, to prevent that.

A yeast infection is much, much easier to treat than a heart condition! No one that I know of has ever died from a yeast infection, but people have died from heart problems initially caused by tooth infections. Please take all the antibiotics until they are finished and worry about the yeast infection afterward, although the advice to take probiotics as a preventative is good advice.

Also, you are douching with peroxide which is very strong. Even watered down, it can be damaging your tissues. Your body (vagina) is self-cleansing. Once you have finished the antibiotics, if you have a yeast infection, treat that and then don't douche anymore.

I'm sorry you are having all these problems! I hope the good advice the other curlies have given you is helpful, as well as my suggestions. Please let us know how you are doing.

ETA: A dr. should give you a prescription that will eliminate the BV. I've had it - I never got it again after the prescription. Peroxide isn't the answer - it may eliminate the symptoms temporarily but they will come back and peroxide isn't meant to be used that way.

Hi all, thanks for the replies. I'm short on time, so I'm going to hit these all at once:

Every time I have, I get a YI after, and then get BV again. Even the BV meds don't seem to take away the smell as much as the peroxide. I read about it online, and originally started by soaking tampons in water/ACV. I then tried peroxide, and I had NO problems. No discharge, no smell, NOTHING. So unless it stops working for me, I'd rather do that then go into a cycle of YIs again. :/

What would be the potential problem? You're on antibiotics, on your period and have BV... Do you have a YI too for sure?

I was just wondering if the douche I normally do would overload my system, since the antibiotics are known to screw things up, too, killing bacteria, etc.

I've heard that is true. The only reason I continue is because it's worked for me, with no YI after. I've had BV for over a year, but never been tested for it because my gyno back home didn't believe me. So that was kind of crappy. I've got a few appointments coming up for other things, so I need to relax a little on going to the doctor, etc. I seriously am considering the probiotic pills, but I think I'll lay off the health care for a little bit and keep douching. If i were having ANY adverse, or "not as good as I'd hoped" effects at all, I'd stop immediately, but I feel so great after I do this. No smell. AT ALL.

Sorry but I disagree. I believe douching with a very very watered down portion of peroxide is perfectly safe, especially since our bodies make it naturally. My last doctor was pretty manipulating. She steered me away from a BV test on the basis that "everything looked/smelled fine" at my last (and first) gyno visit, despite the reports I'd given her (bad smelling discharge, smell that got worse when getting intimate--boyfriend noticed it on 2 different occasions. Talk about embarrassing! And he's my first...poor guy lol) I just moved, so my boyfriend and I are trying to find a new doctor here. Once we get set up with someone I definitely will bring this up to them.

And yeah, no intention to stop taking those antibiotics...I would be a fool to do that! Speaking of which, time for my next dose...later, ladies!

TNB, why? And will you be diluting it? I'm asking because I'm interested also.

Please be careful with peroxide and strictly follow diluting! It is a strong chemical. Peroxide is used to bleach hair.

For BV...Blech. I left a tampon in too long. I forgot about it. Apparently, that can cause BV too.

ETA: Yes, I'm definitely diluting it. HSH says 4 cups water to less than a capful of peroxide. Did I understand that right?

As others have said, please be very very careful. I used to soak tampons in about 4 cups water, and just the lining of the bottom of the cap of the bottle. Then I'd used the leftovers to wash the outside.

Less is better than more! You can always do it again later.

People also seem to have great success with ACV, but it never worked for me.

You might want to look into what you are ingesting. The BV could be caused by an imbalance from your diet. I recently learned that after I eliminated whey protein and adopted a semi-paleo diet which calls for a huge reduction in starchy/yeasty foods (beans, rice, pasta, grains) . Activia, probiotic supplements, and Vagisil wash only helped a little but the change in diet eradicated the whole mess.

2Qs: How long do you soak the tampon? And once the tampon is saturated doesn't it swell too much to insert? How does one get around that?

I have no idea how the OTHER women did it, because I had the SAME question. Like, it absorbs water. How do you get it up there?! I actually couldn't find a way that worked comfortably, that's why I started douching. What I DID do was take it out of the card board applicator bc it would turn to mush anyway, dip it in, wait until it soaked up water, squeeze it a bit, then let it soak for another few seconds/a minute. Then I used some KY jelly and just...put it in. Uncomfortable. When I pulled it out, there was some discharge on the very end of the tampon.

In the end, I started to douche and I really prefer it.

Has anyone found a difference in taking them orally or vaginally?

Years ago I went through several months where I was on the BV/YI rollercoaster. The medication for the BV gave me YI, then it'd flip flop back to BV. I did a homeopathic search and based in my personal symptoms found something that worked for me. I take homeopathic pellets called borax (brand I use is bioron found at vitamin Shoppe, whole foods, sprouts). Everything I read said I'd know if it was working within 24 hours (which I thought was complete carp as I'd been dealing with it for months). But in 24 hours it was much better and back to normal in a couple of days. There are several different things that are options, but that's the one that worked for me.

ETA: if you go here and go through the questions, it will provide you options https://abchomeopathy.com/c.php/19

Found a webpage that describes a method for inserting saturated tampons. It's about halfway down on page 1, starting at the Tea Trea Oil section. I figure the same method could be used with any liquid: Bacterial vaginosis sufferers-READ THIS (long)

Douching is bad for you. The vagina is self-cleaning and doesn't require douching.

Many feminine odors are "normal". Crystal deodorant works very well. Get the liquid spray version and spray daily after showering. It works great on genital odor and is non-irritating.

Some Feminine odors are "normal" yes, but have u ever had BV? I have. It makes you feel gross. It's so far from a normal smell that you KNOW something is wrong. When I had it, I could smell it through my clothes. It smells like dead fish. Sorry to be gross, but it's the truth.

I usually get a YI when I take antibiotics as well & if I need antibiotics for anything I always ask for a Diflucan prescription as well. In my case of BV, antibiotics cleared it up & for once, did not give me a YI. I got lucky.

This, exactly! Yes some odor is perfectly normal, but rotten fish+old period blood that you can smell through your JEANS is not. And douching isn't good for you, but sometimes, it is a good idea. Though I would never douche with a commercial douche, only the peroxide and water.

I actually did not need to douche at all this month. We'll see about next month.

I will, however, look into this deo product!

If it's bad, I would do both. Probiotics play a huge role in gut health and all illness begins in the gut.
I use a great probiotic from Swansons'. 10$ a month when you buy the 3 pack. Best one i've used
