Can someone link me to a simple okra gel recipe?

I keep hearing about this new-fangled okra gel, and I'm dying to try it. I've done the searches, and the only thing I've been able to find are a few really complicated recipes with marshmallow root and vitamins and citric acid and the like. Can someone link me to a simpler (cheaper) recipe for okra gel please? Thanks so much.

I revised this to make it the most basic recipe for this post.

I used frozen okra, whole or sliced (I've now done both).

I added 1 1/2 Cups okra to a pot of 2 1/2 cups distilled water. Cooked on med-low for 15 mins. Raised heat to medium and cooked another 15 minutes- it was at a low boil this last 15. Raised heat to med-high and let boil hard for 5 more. Total cooking time 35 minutes, stirring occasionally. ShellyRN low boils for 30.

I strained the liquid with a mesh strainer and added 1/2 t of xanthan gum (thickener required!)to thicken, and mixed with an immersion blender. If you want it thicker, add more slowly. I like mine more runny.

This yielded about 1 1/2-2 cups

    I let it cool a few minutes, then whisked in these add-ins;

3/4 t agave nectar (for hold- available @ grocery store, in the sugar aisle)
1/2 t grape seed oil (any oil except coconut will work)
10 drops fragrance oil (you can use any fragrance or essential oil for scent)

**ADD PRESERVATIVE (IF DESIRED)- if you do not use preservative, keep a small portion refrigerated for immediate use, and freeze the rest.

    Done!
    2C/ Coarse/ Normal porosity/ SW Florida/ Salt & Pepper
Cleanse: AIA cowash, TJ Tea Tree Condish
Condish: JC Too Shea, Tresemme Botanique
Stylers: flax/okra gel or KCCC + CJ PP or JC Spiralicious
Experimenting with Got2B Ultra gel and loving it so far!

Thanks! I have a couple questions.
Would corn starch work as a thickener? And is agave nectar a humectant?

Is okra gel easy to strain? Also, whenever I make flax seed gel, it always smells terrible. Does okra gel smell bad?

Xanthan gum is a film former so can encourage the cuticle to lay flat and has light hold of its own, it's gummy or jelly like. You should be able to get it in a grovcery store.

Corn starch will thicken but not film form and potentially dull your hair. If you use dry shampoo you wipe or brush the excess out, right?

Check out the links I posted earlier to see how the gel behaves.

Yes and yes. I don't think FSG smells terrible. I'd describe the aroma of okra gel as "earthy." I add EO's to both, so they smell good.

Corn starch will work, but I would try xanthan gum- it's readily available at grocery or health food stores.

Agave is a humectant, but is added to provide hold.

If you're sensitive to glycerin, like I am, I never have an issue with agave.

Hi Chloe! If you were going to buy some frozen okra from the grocery store, which would you buy: whole or sliced and why, if you don't mind me asking?

Sliced! I've used the whole too, but then I sliced it, so now I just buy the pre sliced.

K, the frozen okra is now in the freezer :D

When you add the xanthum gum at the end, do you mix it seperately with a bit of cold water first so it doesn't clump? I don't have an immersion blender.

I started to mix all of my thickeners with water prior to adding them to keep them from clumping. I found that they would be lumpy, even with an immersion blender, if I didn't.

KM- I tried that once and ended up with one huge blob I couldn't get to mix in. I've been having great luck with sprinkling in Tiny amounts at a time while the mix is still really hot, just after straining.

    Thanks ladies :D

Is that a problem only with xanthum gum, when you mix it with a bit of water first?

I've had a problem with Hydroethylcellulose and guar gum, too.

So I got some fresh okra from someone at work and I am wondering if this would work as well. I want to grab the other ingredients from the grocery store if possible but I am not sure where to look for the xanthum gum. I have seen the agave with sweetners so I will get that too. Any EOs better than others or is it personal preference? Any other grocery store add ins that anyone would recommend for high humidity?
    Thank you!

I bought my xanthan gum at the health food store, so I haven't looked for it at the grocery. EOs are your preference- they help mask the smell. I actually use fragrance oils instead, purchased on amazon.

Iherb has lots of goodies for DIY gels including marshmallow root, xanthan gum, etc.
