Any permanent hair dye can damage and dry out hair due to to the alkaline developer and peroxide: there are a few acid based salon dyes that might be gentler. Also consider chelating (remove mineral build up due to hard water or swimming) and pretreating with hydrolysed protein and coconut oil. Never dye over the top of previously colour treated hair, do a roots only application no 'refreshing' the lengths.
