Can anyone explain why this is?

I learned this through trial and error, but I'm curious as to why. If I spray water (or water + conditioner, oil, etc.) in my hair, I get frizz almost immediately. If I smooth it on with my hands, I don't get frizz. I'm thinking the mist/droplets sitting on my hair are somehow encouraging the frizz, but not sure why it doesn't happen if I smooth it on. Does this happen to anyone else?

Yup! Happens to me, too. I have NO idea why this is, though I'd be really curious to hear about the science behind it... if anyone out there knows!

did you try spraying and then smoothing down? cos its the same way with me. I also learned that i can only spray with just water, then ill smooth down a little conditioner with my hands.

Yes, I've tried spraying and smoothing, and that doesn't work either. Spraying with just water also gives me frizz. The only way I can spray anything is if I put my silk sleep cap on immediately after. The silk seems to calm it all down and I wake up to frizz-free hair. That's why I think it's related to the water droplets/mist sitting on my hair.

*raising hand* - I can't spray or spray-n-smooth, either. I have to wet my hands under the faucet, then smooth my wet hands over my clumps. If I'm super careful, I can then scrunch to revive those curls a little.

I have silk sleep caps and a silk pillowcase, lol. I usually have great curls in the morning--a little flat, but I can fluff them up pretty well. I think silk really helps to minimize frizz, but some of it was just figuring out product and how much to use. I had some really bad days before I developed a decent routine.

My hair hates having anything sprayed onto it. I pretty much have to thoroughly wet it every day or just put it in a pony. 2nd day hair rarely happens.

I'm glad to see others have this same problem! It took me a long time to figure it out because it seemed so silly. The most annoying part is that my water is kind of yucky (hard + iron), so I try to avoid putting tap water in it when styling. So I spray distilled water in my hand and smooth it on. It would be so much easier if I could just spray it directly in my hair!

I have the same problem. I find that if I spray my refresher onto my hands, sandwich my hair between them, then run them quickly over my hair, followed by scrunching my hair, I get much better results, and decreased frizz.
