Fine/normal porosity - Do you Co-Wash or Low-Poo?

If you have fine/normal porosity/normal elasticity do you Co-Wash or Low Poo? I have used Deva No Poo and One C for a long time and I am in the process of switching. My hair has felt over conditioned for a while so I am trying to switch up my products and possibly my routines to see if I can get better results.

I am trying to decide if I should go with another Low Poo or try Co-Washing. I am wondering if Co-Washing will be too heavy for my hair.

I would appreciate hearing what your “washing” routine is!

If you use a Low Poo can you let me know which ones you recommend? My hair profile suggested CJ Assurance Gentle, Giovanni TTT and Jessicurl Gentle.

If you Co-Wash do you use the same as your rinse out or a different one? I am especially interested if you Co-Wash with the more expensive conditioners.

The Deva NO poo is essentially a cleansing conditioner. It does have a surfactant, but low on the ingredient list so is very gentle. If you've been using it for a while, my opinion is you can handle co-washing.

What are the issues you're experiencing? Could it be caused by build up? If so, some curlies have problems with polyquats, and there's one fairly high on the list here. You may want to experiment with other conditioners to use as your cleanser to see if that helps.

    DevaCurl No Poo Ingredients:
Water (Aqua, Eau), Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Isopropyl Palmitate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-7, Laureth-4, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Propylene Glycol, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Triticum Aestivum (Wheat) Peptide, Avena Sativa (Oat) Peptide, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Peptide, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Menthol, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum)

Another very popular cleansing conditioner, is the Curl Junkie Daily Fix; it doesn't have the polyquats and may be worth a try.

Curl Junkie Daily Fix Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG -7 Olivate, Guar Hydroxypropytrimonium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, Hydrolyzed Oat Flour, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Matricaria Recuitita (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Yucca Leaf Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract, Melissa Officinalis (Melissa) Leaf Extract, Polysorbate 60, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Fragrance

My favorite cheapie cowash is Trader Joe's Triple tea tree conditioner.

If you want to try a low poo, I like the Deva LOW poo, but it also has polyquats, so IF that may be causing issues, I would avoid it. I think the Shea Moisture line is pretty good. I think any of those others you mentioned in your post would be good to try, and are also on my "list", lol.

I alternate between co-washing (straight conditioner or cleansing conditioner), low-poo an even the occasional gentle sulfate shampoo. I was able to use Deva No-Poo and One C exclusively for over a year (this was before I knew what CG was). Once I started trying other products I didn't love Deva as much. Then I realized it was the One C that I didn't care for, not the No-Poo. I further experimented by trying the DevaCARE line and was back in love. It's not supposed to be really that different from DevaCURL, but for me the difference between the two different One C formulas was amazing.
I could probably still use a cleansing conditioner exclusively, but I'm a product junkie. I do have to be careful with straight conditioner co-washing. There are very few conditioners that don't leave my scalp feeling gunky. My personal favorite is VO5 Vanilla Mint Tea conditioner. My current low-poos are Curl Junkie Gentle Cleansing Shampoo and MoroccanOil Volumizing Shampoo (one of the few CG products they make). And CHS Treatment Shampoo (sulfate) is one of those products that will have to be pried from my cold dead hands.

I low poo. Co-washing just doesn't work for me. My hair is too prone to build up. I low poo about twice a week with the CJ Gentle Cleansing Shampoo. I love it. It works very well, but it's so softening and gentle. I've never met a detangling poo! I think it's because it smooths down the cuticle. It also lasts forever I use a dime size amount on the front, middle, and then back sections of my hair. I concentrate on my scalp and then add more water and let the suds run down the length of my hair. Good stuff.

Thank you everyone that is so helpful! I cannot remember now if my Deva is Low Poo or No Poo, lol. I have to look tonight

Thanks for letting me know about the CJ Gentle, that is one of the products on my list I was thinking of trying in place of the Deva

I currently use garnier fruitis strength & length conditioner to co wash. I shampoo with a gentle shampoo twice a month.

chloe92us -I looked and I have been using the No Poo and the One C. The issue I have seems to be getting over conditioned or perhaps it is build up. After a few days my hair just seems to be weighted down. My curls don't seem to bounce as they used to and usually by the end of the day seem to get flatter. I do "wash" my hair usually about once a week to remove the build up but for awhile it felt like perhaps the Deva products were just not working in my hair.

I am in the process of switching most of my other products as well. I have been using the Deva No Poo/One C/Recoil/BRHG for awhile and think it is time to switch things up. It might also be the recoil weighing it down which is why I plan to try something else instead there as well

I am planning to try the CJ Beauticurls Strengthening and the Spiral Curls Caitlin Conditioners since those were recommended on my curl profile but I am trying to figure our which Low Poo or No Poos to try or if I should go with just Co-Wash which is why I made this post. Any thoughts or advice are appreciated!

Deva is heavy on the glycerin, Recoil heavy on the polyquats, might be either. Choose your ingredients/ products based on your hair properties and dew points/ humidity.

What do you mean by 'wash' once a week, you use a foaming type shampoo or you co-wash once a week?
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
    Experimenting with: benign neglect

Firefox7275 - When I say I wash my hair I mean with a lathering/clarifying poo. My usual routine is to alternate water wash days/No Poo days and one day use clarifying poo. When I water wash I just use water, no conditioner which for now is One C.

I did try for awhile to use One C as a leave in and found it to work great the first day or so but by the 3rd day my hair was really weighed down, almost greasy feeling so that is why I thought it might be the Deva Products. But, I am also trying to find a different curl creme to use in case it is the Re: Coil. I tried KCCC before but never quite feel in love. In the am it would look good but by the afternoon my hair was very weighed down and greasy feeling.

As I mentioned in another post from you I live in Orlando so the humidity is really high right now, 70% today with a dew point of 74. My hair properties are fine/normal/normal.

    I appreciate all the advice!

If you're struggling with being overconditioned you could probably do without the cowashing. There's tons of low-poos that are well liked:

SM poos (I would recommend Coconut/Hibiscus for fine hair; some like the Yucca. The Moisture Retention one may be a bit heavy)
    Yes to Cucumbers
    Giovanni poos
    DermOrganics
    Komaza Care
Free and Clear (good if you tend to be allergic/sensitive)
    Renpure
    Jessicurl
some like the CJ Gentle Cleansing

Look for low-poo reviews in the products tab of this page!

Everyone is going to react a little different so to a certain extent you won't know until you try. From personal experience: I love the SM Coconut/Hibiscus one. The Giovanni ones are good too my favorite being an older formulation of SaS. I tried the Free and Clear before passing it to my mom and that's a good option for people who may not be able to take 100 botanicals in their hair products. I've turned into a bit of a low-poo junkie so I'm going to pick up the DermOrganics one and YTcuckes.

The ones that were recommended to you are probably worth a shot. Besides staying away from sulfates and other harsh surfactants I also look for low poos that don't have c. betaine as the second ingredient... it's kind of harsh for me, but I can take it in lower concentration. Hope this helps!

I used to use Free & Clear because of my allergies, but the salt in it destroyed my hair. This was before I was knowledgeable enough to realize it and stop using it.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I think I may try doing low poo for awhile with a new protein conditioner.
