Sun Protection

I burnt my scalp after my run on Saturday. I was a bad girl and only SPF-Ed my face ( my bb creme has SPF 25 and did not do my arms or legs.
The only part of me that was burnt after was my scalp.... My whole scalp.:(
When I went to shower today my scalp was on FIRE! It hurts to rest my head on my pillow.
What do you fellow curly ladies do to protect your scalp from the sun? My hair is medium to darkish blonde, thin, and fine like a baby's so the sun just goes through it. Any tips on soothing it would be completely appreciated! This flipping' hurts!

Buy a UV protective bandana - eg. Buff - the scalp is high risk for skin cancer and UV light damages hair in a similar manner to peroxide. There is no hair friendly product you can apply enough of to get a decent SPF as far as I know.

As an aside I struggle to believe you applied enough of the BB cream to get SPF25, you need to apply the same thick layer as for any sunscreen not your regular thin layer for moisturiser or cosmetics.

In the short term drench your scalp in a high strength aloe vera inner leaf gel, it's has scientifically proven wound healing, anti inflammatory and collagen inducing properties. Not aware of any other DIY remedies that have the same pedigree. Try to avoid soaking your scalp, use only cool or cold water and no massage if you need to wet your hair. Don't use any oil rich in oleic acid, a known irritant for susceptible/ sensitive skins.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
Experimenting with: benign neglect

I'm sorry you were burned- not fun. We live in Florida and sunburn is mainstream here. I agree with the aloe Vera.

My family wears hats for protection. The best ones are made by Columbia- they have a SPF rating and are made of moisture wicking material. I think the ball cap would work for running (we wear the sun hat types).

They are expensive, but worth it!

Ball cap:
Women's Coolhead

I wear this one:

Hubby & son wear this type:
http://www.columbia.com/Coolhead™-Cachalot/CU9500,default,pd.html

We wear them swimming at the pool or beach and they wash well in the machine.

Condish: JC Too Shea, Tresemme Botanique
Stylers: flax/okra gel or KCCC + CJ PP or JC Spiralicious
Experimenting with Got2B Ultra gel and loving it so far!

I'm going to have to do the hat thing if I'm outside for a long period of time ( in my case, 20 minutes) thank you for the rec's!
I'm trying to figure out what happened to my aloe gel....

If you have some Cure Care, I tried it and liked it on sunburn last summer. It's not sticky like aloe gel.

This isn't all hair-related but the best protectant from the sun is not staying in it. Sunscreen can only do so much. Staying in the shade, wearing protective clothing/hats and avoiding the sun at the hottest times (between 10am and 4pm) is the best form of protection alongside sunscreen.

Skin Deep has some good information on sun-related health and sunscreen reviews (things to look for and avoid).

For my skin I get MD Solar Sciences sunscreens from my derm. They are pricey but well worth the price. I always wear hats now too.

I think for your case since you weren't in the sun for very long and you were running, it's a good idea to have a cap around like Chloe suggested. You can just throw it on if need be. Keep some in your car, at home whatever so they're handy.

I wear scarves too. A nice scarf on your head can really accent a cute outfit. I got sun burned on my the tip of my nose once & it was not fun.
