Hair Cutting Tips?

Okay, I'm usually pretty safe about my 3c curly hair, I keep it long with no layers, but I've recently decided I want to try something crazy. Kind of like a weird two layered thing, I don't know what to call it. I once saw someone with something similar but I couldn't find it on the internet. Anyway I want to cut it myself because whenever I have crazy ideas my stylist always tells me that i'll ruin my hair or she just doesn't know what I'm talking about. But my mom said it'll end up shaped all funny if i don't get it done by a professional. Does anyone have any tips for shaping hair at home? It would be much appreciated!
