Trying to get my 3a/b curls back

PicklePod5810PicklePod5810 Posts: 5Registered Users
I'm new to all this, but I'm fairly sure my hair is naturally a 3a or b. But since having kids, lots of stress and an arid environment for years, my hair has lost it's curl. It's now looking like a 2a. I'm trying to get my hair back to its natural curl, but I need some help figuring out how to.

I like to make my own products, if at all possible, but I have no clue where to start there, either.

The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with that Curly Hair Basics | Live Curly Live Free Many of us make Flax Seed Gel (FSG), and more recently, okra gel. You can search and find a ton of threads about both of them. Once you determine your hair properties, you can look for others with hair like yours and see what they use. It's the best place to start.

Other then those, my hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type companies. I stay away from a lot of chemicals, especially polyquats.

if you live in an arid climate, then i'd say you need lots of moisture -- a good leave in, and always seal your hair. i don't know your hair's properties, so i can't recommend any products. if you do a search on here, there are lots of threads on this and you an narrow it down to what works for your hair properties.

I had the SAME EXACT PROBLEM. My hair had uncurly spots because I was straightening them almost everyday, they were dry... they were disgusting.

Seriously, the CG method is wonderful. I use Jessicurl Too Shea and it's a miracle in a bottle. Even if your hair is good, bad or awfull, this product is just amazing.

Also gels doesn't work for me. I rather take mousse. So I use Jessicurl Oil Blend then put 3 handfull of Panthene Curly Mousse and then I plop (be sure that your hair is really wet though) and wait for 20-30 min (not more than that otherwise your hair will stick to your cloth and it will look messy) and leave it dry naturally and after 2 hours or so it looks great!

If you have no clue what I'm talking about seriously go check it out on google I understand your problem and don't worry it will go back as normal (and maybe even better than it used to be like it did for me).

It takes about 1 to 4 weeks before your curls will be set for good.

Ok, so I did all the test thingies on here, and I have dense, coarse hair with low porosity. That REALLY doesn't sound like much fun LOL I used to just wash, condition and air dry. I loved it. Every now and then, I would have to put some curl cream in it, just to tame it on humid days (I'm from Indiana)

I'm not in San Diego anymore. I recently moved to Houston, and it's not so arid anymore. I've been using a Pantene curling mousse, and a Got2b freezing spray because that's all I really have right now. I know there's going to be some trial and error, but I'm trying to minimize it as much as I can. I'll see if I can post a picture a little later. Today it's the curliest I've seen it for a while. I just cut myself some bangs (sort of) and they are amazingly curly, so I'm wondering if I should just start with a clean slate. I don't have any damage or split ends or anything like that, it's in pretty good condition considering.

Oh, and I've also been taking Biotin for hair and nails.

i don't know anything about the products you are using, so cannot offer any comments on them. i will say that while some curlies have coarse hair, most do not. most have fine hair, a lot have medium, few coarse. not to say you don't, just that your analysis might be off. it might be medium-coarse?

look at the low porosity forum for some extra advice. if you think your hair is damaged, then a cut is a good idea.

Ok, here are some pictures I took yesterday. The bangs I just cut yesterday, and the way they turned out is the reason I'm wondering if I should just get it cut. I don't really see any damage or anything.

Holy hugeness! Sorry, didn't realize they were that big. I'll try to resize them.
